Philippines among the top countries with worst traffic

Numbeo, a crowdsourced global database and multinational research firm, has published its Traffic Index for Country 2015 which placed the Philippines among the top ten countries in the world with the worst traffic conditions.

According to Numbeo’s report, the Philippines has a Traffic Index of 202.31 which puts the country in 9th place worldwide. The report also shows the Philippines with a Time Index (in minutes) of 45.50 and an Inefficiency Index of 217.82. See table below. (click for a larger image)

In the explanation of indices, Traffic Index refers to the “composite index of time consumed in traffic due to job commute, estimation of time consumption dissatisfaction, CO2 consumption estimation in traffic and overall inefficiencies in the traffic system.” Time Index is “an average one way time needed to transport, in minutes.” While Inefficiency Index “is an estimation of inefficiencies in the traffic, with high inefficiencies it assumes driving, long commute times, etc.”

GMA Network sought the comment of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino about Numbeo’s report. Tolentino said that the report must also be viewed as “an indication of the country’s growing economy and population.” Although he admitted that it “affirms the country’s dire need for a more efficient transport system and the decentralization of Metro Manila.”

  1. Traffic in PH is caused by

    1. Traffic enforcers (those who want to earn by flagging vehicles and not minding traffic situation).
We pass by Julia Vargas and Meralco Ave intersection everyday and there is ALWAYS a vehicle flagged due to traffic light violation.

    2. Small 1-2 lane main roads

    3. People parking on these small 1-2 main roads.

    4. Buses. Buses stopping and loading and unloading whenever. Same as taxis doing that in Edsa.

    5. Lastly, ineffective transportation system like trains. Goes to show that we have poor urban planning.

    • May nakalimutan ka Dang,

      9. Mga pedestrian na tumatawid sa bawal

  2. ang sasakyan, nadadagdagan. eh ang kalsada? solusyon? road widening as wide as commonwealth ave.

    • first lane – parking, 2nd lane – jeep and bus stopping anywhere, 3rd lane motorcycle and other cars trying to evade the jeeps slowing down, 4th lane – cars just trying to get from point a to point b evading lane 3.

Para sa kin ang causes of traffic. Jeep, Pedicab and all other forms of informal transportation. Kailangan itangal lahat yan. We are the only country that I know of with Jeeps. Traffic is not a monster problem. Its people who dont want to do anything because some sector or person will be inconvenienced rather than looking at the combined price were paying for as a society for the ineffeciency. Good luck sa ating lahat.

  4. Proud to be Pinoy.. Manny! Manny! Manny! Manny!

  5. Another source of heavy traffic are the motorists themselves, ung singitan ng singitan or ayaw magbigay ng daan kahit alam nila na may gustong mag-pass through.

  7. Wow, we got good company.

  8. Sino bah ang na shock sa ganyan? Its more shockin kung hindi na sali sa list

  9. Akalain mo iyon meron pang mas traffic sa atin
