iPhone 4 announced!

Update: See Globe iPhone 4 Price here. Read the full iPhone 4 Review here or check out the iPhone 4 Release Coverage.

So Apple finally announced its new model of the iPhone and it’s not the iPhone 4G or the iPhone HD that’s been doing the rounds on the net. Steve calls it the iPhone 4.

And though we’ve already had first glimpse of this phone back when Gizmodo featured that lost prototype they bought for $5,000, it still draws a lot of amazement from the crowd.

iphone 4

Apple added features that are practically common to most other smartphones like the front-facing camera and LED flash but these are not the highlights yet.

The iPhone 4 is thinner (claims to be the thinnest smartphone ever, 24% thinner than the 3GS) at just 9.3mm (the Nokia E71 is 10mm thin). Next, they made the resolution higher at 326 pixels per inch (that’s 4 times than the previous model).

The iPhone 4 specs:
Apple 1GHz A4 chip
3.5″ display @ 960×640 pixels
HSDPA 7.2Mbps
WiFi 802.11n
GPS
Gyroscope
5MP camera with LED flash + HD video recording @ 720p 30fps
2nd front-facing camera
2 mics w/ noise-canceling
Bluetooth 2.1 w/ EDR
iOS 4

The iPhone 4 has better battery life as well — 40 hours of music, 10 hours of video, 6 hours of 3G browsing and 10 hours on WiFi browsing.

Apple is also putting iPhone OS 4 in it but renames it as iOS 4.

The iPhone 4 comes in two colors — white and black and two models, 16GB and 32GB. As for the price:

iPhone 4 16GB: $199 + 24-month contract
iPhone 4 32GB: $299 + 24-month contract

As for availability:
June 24 – US, Japan, France, Germany and UK
July 2010 – 18 more countries (hopefully, including the Philippines)
September 2010 – 88 countries

Globe Telecom already has their micro-SIM card ready so all we need is to wait how much it will retail when the iPhone 4 arrives in the Philippines.

If you’re wondering what the price of the upcoming iPhone 4 with Globe in the Philippines, read my post here.

  78. MOSSjr says:

    1. We shouldn’t blame steve jobs for the price… It’s still affordable in the U.S. at 200 – 300 USD. (about 9K – 15K pesos lang)

    2. Globe Telecom is the one marking up the Iphone4’s price so high it’s too unreasonable. ( 37K-44K pesos?) Whoaaaah…!!!

    3. Micro-SIM card will really make Globe Telecom monopolize this handset. And garner more subscribers.

Smart should also ready there Micro-SIM for this… or meron na sila? =)

  79. jayson says:

    to all iphone fanatic:

absolutely no usb mass storage device yet BUT there is a rumor about it…
    itunes dependent too…
no bluetooth file transfer to another phones…
only one computer you can connect iphone 4 otherwise if you connect to other pc…………lahat mawawala mga files you uploaded earlier before that…..
    otherwise…………meron na ako nyan…
faster browsing, no signal problem to globe
kaya guys ipon ipon na kayo weeeeeeeeee….
    try using jailbreak…lol

  80. David says:

Still we have time to see what they are offering. If the Globe get’s high interest rate from people and if they decided to ask for higher price”
Sure we will need a competitor as in other countries.

  89. Michael says:

Bkt po dli m lobat 2ng iPhone ko n 3gs…tnx n more power

  90. dandelionne says:

Indeed iphone is a sight to behold! I currently own an iPhone 3GS and am amazed at the sensitivity and ease of “touchscreening” over everything EXCEPT the texting part. Gosh,it takes me half a century to fingerpoint the keys so as to prevent unnecessary letters while constructing a text message! and the new BB Torch 9800 has solved the part-it has a keypad for those who prefer texting on one. Though its kinda bulkier.

  91. nina says:

i can’t wait for the iphone 4 to arrive in the philippines! i’m getting it for my birthday! :DD when is it arriving the philippines??

  92. JunAlquis says:

i’ll just wait for iphone 5 possibly out early next year.

  93. Frsncesd says:

Yahoooo!!! My Iphone is working perfectly!!! Unlocked and jailbreak, done!!! No signal problem.

  94. ncute says:

ang ipone sa japan pagsenend ng sis ko sakin gagana b dito sa pianas?

  95. manny says:

well..for those speaking ill, or downright hatred of iphone, what you fail to realize is that the phones/smartphones are key electronic devices like laptops and LED TV’s, is now more of a personal and fashion statement, rather than “just a phone”. you also cannot deny the fact, that Mac, and anything Apple right now have a cool factor that the other brands dont have, or already diminishing.

personally, im not an iphone owner, but you have to understand the psychology of market demand.

  96. nhina uy says:

where can i buy i phone 4 in the Philippines? but not in globe. please answer my question

    • Abe Olandres says:

@nhina uy – try GreenHills VirraMall. Saw one selling at Php90,000 there yesterday.

  97. manong says:

    @truebluemd

sana wag magpasa ng batas sa amerika na pwede mong pakasalan ang iphone mo… gosh!

tama ka.. beauty is in the eye of the beholder! at dyan bilib ako sayo

  98. technophile says:

    @truebluemd:
I second the motion. Manong’s comments are irrational and uneducated. Just saying. :)

  99. Truebluemd says:

Zagg (aka Invisible Shield) has recently extended their iphone4 overage to include the antenna. It is the same material used on the front and back portions of the iphone4. One good thing about this is that it doesn’t cover the aesthetics of the phone. I had mine done recently at a mall for an additional $10 (to include labor). You can visit their website at

    http://www.zagg.com/personalize/zaggskins/index.php

to see other skins if you want to add some flair to it while protecting the antenna from decreasing reception. I had mine done clear to maintain it’s original look.

  100. Truebluemd says:

    @ manong:
Your comments are rude, rubbish, and unsolicited.
Sa totoo lang bibili pa ako nang dalawa pang iphones.
And, there are far more gorgeous people than Marian here in the US (no offense to her).

  101. kai says:

wowh i like design and architechture…

  102. dety says:

very elegant and futuristic. i love it

  103. manong says:

    @truebluemd

bili ka pa ng isa, tpos gawing mong hikaw!

o kaya itakip mo sa mukha mo… tignan natin kung gaganda ka pa kesa kay marian rivera

  104. ikilobo says:

new model of the iPhone its really futuristic..
    i love this model

  105. Truebluemd says:

After the announcement that Apple will give away their free “bumpers”, I’ll definitely get one. No way am I returning this iphone4! I played with the other phones (i.e., Droids, pixi) that my friends have. In all honesty, I think the iphone4 is still the best (I myself was a previous Blackberry bold (BB 9000) user).

However, admit it or not, iphone4 has a hardware issue (but, no way am I going to put some duct tape on that damn small black reception band – it kills the aesthetics of the phone – and trust me, iphone4 has this definitely gorgeous killer looks). How can I describe it? Small, pretty heavy for its size, elegant.

I guess the one good thing about this is that other companies (like Belkin, Griffin, Scosche, Incipio, Incase, etc) are taking advantage of Apple’s Achilles heel. When you have these antenna-protectors, iphone4 works just perfectly fine.

Again, you must personally see, feel, and play with this gadgetry before bashing it. Until now, my co-workers wants to feel and play with it once in a while – cause its that damn goodin!

  106. Evan says:

It can be used in China or not.
I will buy one if it can be used in China
    Please give me the answer.

  107. Angel says:

where to get the iphone4 unlocked in the philippines?

  108. Angel says:

where can i get an iphone4 unlocked in the philippines? right now?

  109. Truebluemd says:

I was showing off my iphone4 with my co-workers. True enough, they were impressed with the “retina display”. One’s got the Droid Evo (by Verizon)and he compared the display with my iphone4. My other co-worker has the Droid Incredible (again by Verizon). Hands down, the iphone4 wins according to them. You have to see it to believe. However, if you want a bigger screen to use as GPS or as a personal video player, I guess, go for the Evo. But if you don’t mind size, then go for the iphone4 (which has the best screen display to date). Another co-worker had a Sprint iphone3Gs (jail-broken). He was was sold out! He said he’s transferring to AT&T (hahaha!). But I told him that there might be a possibility that there will be an iphone4 released by Verizon early next year (hopefully). I’m used to a bigger GPS, but it got stolen in my car (Imagine, in a paid parking garage!???). Now, I’m using the my iphone4 as my GPS, which, by the way, works better than my old GPS. Now, it’s my all-in-one gadget – planner, music player, HD video recorder, camera, alarm clock, gaming console, GPS, online banking, buying stuff online (craigslist, ebay, etc), internet radio, ebook reader, etc, etc….
You got to see, feel, and play with it to say, yup, it’s really good!
BUT! iPhone4 needs to fix this reception crap! If it’s fixed, then, it will be perfect – almost….

  110. Mao Baytan says:

is there going to be an openline iphone 4?

  111. ardhan says:

By the way, my friend has a Droid Evo (by Verizon) and we were both speed tested my phone and his at work. Both had equally strong (full bars) reception. Amazingly, iphone4 beat the Evo in upload speed.

  112. francess says:

just got my iphone last week of june. iphone rocks. :) but still cant use it as a phone.. need help!!! help me to unlock my phone.

  113. Technophile says:

    @Joy

Are you also right now in the Phils? Is the seller in the Phils as well or she’s just gonna ship it out. Wala bank issues yung nakuha mong iPhone?

  114. Joy says:

I got my IPhone4 worth almost $699 32gb from a friend who also sells in PH. She’s on twitter: evrythnauthntc… and I think she has a facebook account aswell. just message her on twitter to ask :) INdeed a great buy!!!!! LOVE my IPHONE4 ♥♥♥

  115. yang says:

how much is that without plan.

    i can’t waiting ….

  116. Mika says:

how much will it cost here in Philippines????
please answer haha I converted it last Sunday and the amount the comes out is 8 855?!?!

  117. Truebluemd says:

I got some sort of “bumper” or a soft-rubber material that covers both sides and back at Bestbuy (Belkin is the brand at about $25). I guess there will be more of these protectors as soon as the iphone4 reaches the whole world. My iphone4 now works well – I mean, perfectly.

By the way, my friend has a Droid Evo (by Verizon) and we were both speed tested my phone and his at work. Both had equally strong (full bars) reception. Amazingly, iphone4 beat the Evo in upload speed.

iphone4 is beaten by the Droid specs-wise hands down (well, for the most part). But US sales will tell you differently. I guess it just personal preference.

    Good day to all!

I finally got rid of my Blackberry bold (BB9000)! I’m sending to my friend sa Pinas.

I got my iphone4 last June 24, 2010 (Thursday), which I pre-ordered a week before. I pre-ordered mine in an AT&T Store because Apple store was so packed, I didn’t have patience or time to wait. Perhaps, people thought that you can only pre-order it in an Apple store. You can pre-order also at Best Buy where lines are much much shorter. I got the 16 GB (32GB price of $300+tax is too steep for me) for $210 (may tax kasi).

This phone is really thin – slightly thinner than the 3GS. Display is amazingly bright – everything looks crisper. Gyroscope is fun. As a matter of fact, I just downloaded gunrange (I just don’t know if it will work on 3GS). I’m also excited to download books from Amazon as it will display a much clearer text. Phone processing works very fast (especially if I use my wifi at home). Cameras work perfectly. Haven’t touched on the video editing yet (I’ll get there, hehehehe…)

Have I encountered any problem(s)? YES! There is this annoying problem about reception. If you touch the phone tightly, signal bars drop slowly. I never had a dropped call yet due to this (God forbid). Akala ko it’s AT&T’s fault. Apparently, this was a problem with other phones as well (as I researched online). I really do hope that Apple fixes this problem ASAP as this will deter people from buying this gadgetry.

Is it worth it? Definitely! You have to see it and physically play with it to appreciate it’s capabilities.

we got our iphone 4 yesterday @ bestbuy Launch day..well it was pretty impressive, with all the upgrades specially the retina display it was really clear, and the 5mp camera with LED flash, and the vga front camera for facetime wifi only video chatting..The IOS$ works perfectly Nothing much Changed with the icons arrangement and how the OS looks, Except for the Multitasking capability and you can drag icons together to create a folder..this are all the good side, and now heres the bad side, first if you are unlucky to get the display yellow discoloration and the white spots due to manufacturing, and the reception issue when you hold or cover the 2 antennas in the lower side of phones youre gonna get a very bad signal..and take note of this dont drop your iphone the back side is very fragile..anyways all in all it was awesome…

    As for the price:

  128. Rico Zuñiga says:

The main reason why some people here don’t like the iPhone 4’s apparent “new features” is not because they can’t afford it (they probably can) but because they think these “new features” are old news and have been present even in older phones. They’re probably right. However, Apple is not about introducing “firsts” they’re about introducing “better” and from the words of Steve Wozniak, “I don’t want credit for designing the first personal computer I just want credit for designing the first good one.”.

The front facing camera, been around for ages but only a handful use it (except in Japan). Probably introduced 4-5 years ago, but we didn’t have the broadband infrastructure to support it back then so not a lot of users, even the present infrastructure we have is questionable. But with iPhone 4, Apple is pushing it as one of the main features, not just an added value service like it used to be, and most likely making it very simple and straightforward to use. And this probably goes with the other new “old” features.

And if we can’t see through all those fluffy “magical” buzz words apple’s marketing department is throwing out then we’re severely limiting ourselves. If you base your decision of hating the phone on the amount of buzzwords surrounding it without looking at what it really is then you’re missing out. Of course apple will throw out those “magical” nonsense, it’s marketing, everyone does that, even HTC names their device the “Incredible” or the “Legend”. Would you rather have them throw out technically accurate but boring jargon like “Iphone with 960 x 640 pixels packed in a 3.5″ in-plane switching screen display. Get it now!”. There’s an Overview page and there’s a Technical Specs page and you put marketing hype on the former.

  129. Ronnie says:

  130. Paul says:

@ Jon: That’s why i said “near perfection”. lol :)

@ Abe: Off-topic, posting a comment using yuga iphone app takes so long to publish. is there any problem with the app? :)

  131. Jon says:

    @Paul

I know that was the Wifi issue. It was simply my reply to you saying “perfection” :)lol

I mean, imagine using that feature in an area where there are a lot of wifi hotspots. That would render that feature useless. I hope they resolve that issue soon.

  132. manong says:

    two words:

    JAILBREAK TIME!

(that’s the best feature unannounced but coming soon on the iphone 4)

  133. Paul says:

@ Jon: i’ve been watching that part of his demo over and over. Steve Jobs was able to pin-point the problem (wifi). It’s probably because Facetime requires bigger bandwidth. So it’s the Facetime program that needs improvement and not the iPhone demo units per se. Again, just my two cUents.

  134. Jon says:

    @Paul

Well, surely if someone gave me an iPhone 4 or even a 3GS, I’d gladly accept it, but not use it much still. Maybe an iPhone with a qwerty keyboard would get my attention :)

Superior you say? What about that thing that happened to Steve Jobs during the demo of the iPhone 4? XD hehe.

Don’t get me wrong either. The hardware and software of iDevices are great. I just don’t agree with its implementation (app store and OS restrictions etc)

  135. Paul says:

    @ Jon: Yup, I own an iPhone 3GS 16GB. :)

Don’t get me wrong, guys. I’m also under the spell of Steve Jobs. Apple may have introduced these so-called “new features” of iPhone 4 as their own innovations, but this is simply because the “new features” are already near perfection and possess superior technological qualities than those of Nokia’s or other phone manufacturers who have been in the industry for soooooo long.

Try to reward yourself at least an iPhone 3GS or any Apple products. You’ll understand why we’re soooo fanatic of Steve Jobs. Peace! :)

  136. Arvin says:

Sasmsung says that yung LCD ng Iphone 4 sucks up 30% more power than samsung’s Super AMOLED display. so useless yung long battery life daw kung imamaximize yung screen display. but then again pantay lng yung battery life ng iphone 4 sa ibang smartphones( kung nka max yung screen display)

  137. Jon says:

I find it funny when people say those people who “bash” Apple and the iPhone (4) are “bitter” because they could not afford it.

So, you have the money to buy an iPhone? Then go buy it. Don’t gloat. When people point out its issues or problems, don’t get too fanboyish and flame/troll. Opinions :)

The iPhone 4 didn’t bring anything new. So it NEVER changed anything. Multitasking? That has been around for ages. Video calls as well. Nothing new. Move along. Just another ploy to get money out of iSheep. XD

I tried using an iPhone, and I own an iPod touch. I like the snappy OS, but it is more like a toy to me. No offense. I’d still pick Android over iOSx any time of the day.

  144. fr0stbyte says:

As I said already, the phone itself is good. I had a friend who lent me one for half a day. It was great. But nothing to tell my mother about. And as I already said, the touch screen is far from previous iterations that I’ve had the chance of getting of hands on. But at the end of the day it’s just a phone. With limits and restriction absent other, not so expensive ones. It took four damn generations to stick a freaking front facing camera. Go figure.

What I don’t like most is the delusional hype everyone’s been doing. It’s not “magical”. It doesn’t change everything. It’s just a damn phone with overly melodramatic adjectives plastered unto ads coming from Steve Jobs neurotic mind. Kapish?

  145. technophile says:

    @snpklsdmbldr “Globe is like AT&T
    go figure xD”

LOL. Globe sucks! I thinking it would even take them years to make the video calling work on 3G. Even their 3G network is slow. They have a lot of issues.

See if anyone can relate to this, you call them to know your running unbilled charges and they could not provide you that information coz their system is not available and will request you to call back at 8 am. Come 8 am, their system is still bugged down. WTF!

  146. roland says:

@frostbyte – do u even try to use iphone just for 1 week?

“This changes everything. Again” Can you please quantify “everything”?
And that front-facing camera feature is so five-years ago. Video calling’s even limited to iPhone 4. Meaning you can’t just call any phone with video calling capabilities. Not all my friends are frappé-sipping leeches so that’s gonna be a problem.

    What say you “Apple Whore”?

  156. Jiro Yan says:

    @fr0stbyte

not just the touch screen, many factor why Apple product dominates. One of this is Apple innovation. This company is so good that it causes imaginations to run wild. A hedge fund could float a story that Apple is thinking of buying Saturn in order to develop a new brand of Apple cars and people would go nuts. The name Saturn would instantly become a symbol of quality and innovation. If they floated a similar rumor about IBM, investors wouldn’t be as quick to jump. The constant innovation coming out of Apple provides traders with endless material for believable speculation.

  157. Jiro Yan says:

    @Curious

Post Paid: A model of cellular service whereby the customer is charged for usage in the prior month (hence ‘post’ usage), and hence does not feature any limitations on volume of service used. In contrast the Prepaid model asks customers to add a certain amount to their accounts prior to usage and their maximum usage is limited to the amount that is added to the account.
Depending on the country of usage, there might be a number of types of charges associated with such service: -Line Rent or Fixed charges which are basically fees charged by the service provider for the privilege of maintaining a phone number and account with them. -VAT/Taxes/Govt Fees which vary depending on the country but could add up to a substantial portion of the bill -Usage charges per minute of voice service, per text/pic/multimedia message sent or received and per megabyte of data service used. Recently this is being replaced by a flat fee for Unlimited Voice, Messaging and Data services.
Postpaid compared to prepaid: – Prepaid is activated by purchasing credit load vs. Postpaid where you can continue use without the restriction and/or limitation based on the available credit.
Prerequisites: Postpaid service typically requires two essential components in order to make the ‘post-usage’ model viable: 1. Credit history/Contractual commitment: This is the basis on which the service provider is able to trust the customer with paying their bill when its due and to have legal resource in case of non-payment 2. Service Tenure: Most postpaid providers require customers to sign long term (1-3 year) contracts committing to use of the service. Failure to complete the term would make the customer liable for Early Terminiation Fees (ETF).
The United States is an example of a country dominated by Postpaid providers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-mobile) although a smaller market has been captured by prepaid providers such as Boost, Virgin Mobile, MetroPCS, Cricket, Tracfone and Jump

MY TAKE: i’l just wait for iTOUCH 4th gen, to be announced come September 2010. it will be more or less the same with iphone 4 (without call&text functionality). but youll only pay (estimated based on history of itouch) about 300-400usd. that is GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY, at least to me.

Symbian fails because it took them years to come up with a decent app store and through the years platform version fragmentation.

IPhones on the otherhand had excellent app store by relying on it’s App Store service. However this created a monopoly that any published app or content will be subject to censorship and may be withdrawn at Apple’s whim.

I think the main selling point of this phone is the “Retina Display.” Imagine, 320+ppi on a screen that size. I will write my 20/20 vision a lovely farewell letter now.

Facetime, 720p recording, multitasking, better battery; marami nang nakagawa nyan. ‘And’ Facetime currently will work only with wifi (which they even had problems demo-ing it during the keynote).

I’ve never liked Macs and I don’t see me getting on anytime soon, but I think Apple’s designs are always something to behold.

I’ve always held back on purchasing an iPhone because of their lame lack of features that are regularly found in other phones, but I think I’m getting this one. The only thing holding me back now is the price.

Apple fan boys. They rave like silly little boys holding their overpriced toys acting up like something’s up their butt. My post cowers in fear of deletion. :O

Let the FANBOYISM begin. It’s so funny people consider the iPhone the most amazing and the best of the best in the smartphone category, wherein all the features introduced in the iPhone 4 have been around for quite some time in other devices. Then again, it’s your personal preference (I hope, and not blind allegiance). Hence, I respect that.

Video calling did not click here. It’s not going to click once the iPhone 4 arrives to our shores. It’s nothing but hype.

    Hi,

I’m planning to purchase the SE X10. (for my bday w/c is in July. hehehehe)
I read your review and it looks like the X10 has not met your expectations of an android phone. i want to know what the release date of the Iphone 4G is here and the estimated price. (i bet it’s a bit expensive considering Globe is slashing off 3G price)

i hope it does come out in July d2 sa pinas so i can check your review. and hopefully decide what to buy. or, i hope i can wait that long. ; )

    I want one….

    My 3GS is jealous :| :))

  212. ReyMatt says:

I hope the video calling feature will be supported by Globe’s 3G network at launch locally. Steve Jobs said that it’s only available over wi-fi for now

    @want new phone
just curious, will you be considering the 5″ dell streak?

  214. want new phone says:

I don’t know about this. There’s absolutely nothing new on the iPhone 4 that’s already not in the other android smart-phones that released earlier. (except the gyroscope) LOL

Longer battery life (iPhone 4 has a larger battery)
    gyroscope (for gaming)
better screen reso (retina display what?)

I would still pick the Evo 4G or Incredible any day.

but they’re not yet available here so. I’ll wait.

  215. lolipown says:

I think the question on every avid reader’s mind is that will abe upgrade to the iPhone 4 or get one of the new Android high-end phones?

  216. technophile says:

WOW! I’ve been waiting for this to come out. I can’t wait to know when it’ll be available here it the Phils. as well as the price.

Post updates from Globe please. :D

  217. Jiro Yan says:
