The 6th generation iPod Nano must be the oddest looking iPod in recent history of Apple. It does not look anything similar to its predecessor nor any other iPods before it. Check out our full review of the iPod Nano 6G after the jump.
The new design of the Nano departs from what we’ve usually expected of it. This time, Apple decided to cut the size in half and made the display a touchscreen. Oh, and they’ve totally removed the clickwheel too.
In most respects, this new Nano does not look like any Nano. It’s small, thin and compact and the small touchscreen is the center of it all. On top is the power button and two smaller circular buttons for volume controls. At the bottom is the 3.5mm audio jack and the proprietary 30-pin dock connector. Most surprising is the belt clip they added at the back, a feature only found in the Shuffle before.
Since the iPod Nano now sports a touch screen display, the UI resembles that of iOS (the ones found in the iPod Touch & iPhone) although due to the limited screen real estate, it has smaller icons on a 2 x 2 grid.
To navigate, you just flick the screen sideways just like you would with the iPod Touch or iPhone. And since there’s no physical home button, you need to press the middle of the screen for a few seconds to go back to the main menu. It’s a bit confusing even if you’re a long-time iPod user since this is a new touch/gesture command.
The screen is bright, crisp and has all the usual eye-candy to it. The black bezel around it seems a little too thick I thought Apple could have used that extra space as part of the screen real estate. Navigating the touchscreen is easy although you’d sometimes end up launching an app especially if you have large fingers.
Also feels a little clumsy to use with one hand (much more if you have a big one) so most of the time, you tend to hold it with two hands — one to hold it firmly and the other to navigate the UI. Not a big effort but one could get used to it in time.
Music quality is good but not very impressive. Just like its other siblings (specifically the iPod Shuffle) it doesn’t have that enough bass and range. However, if you’re a long-time uer of the iPod Nano you won’t notice any difference at all except maybe if you use a much better headphones with it.
Since video playback has been dropped from this model, all you can use it is playing music or podcasts. It was hard to view photos on the 2.2-inch screen of the old Nano; it’s now even harder to view them on the smaller 1.54-inch screen.
Other things that are missing on the new one is the VGA camera, the built-in microphone and speakers (I especially missed the speakers). Also, if you bought games for the old Nano, you won’t be able to load or use them on the new one.
Battery life is impressive though and I could go for days without recharging it. Apple claims up to 24 hours on music playback and it isn’t far from the truth.
I felt that Apple made a wrong move on the re-architecture of the iPod Nano. Aside from the storage capacity, it does not add much value when you compare it with the iPod Shuffle. It looks cute, but that’s all there is to it. I think people will gravitate with either an iPod Touch or the iPod Shuffle as the Nano seems to have lost its positioning with this new design.
The new UI is still a hit or miss — either you’ll like the refresh with the touchscreen UI or you’ll completely hate it. I reckon those who regularly use their iPod Nano outdoors or for sports (like running or in the gym) might not find the new Nano very appealing; not really practical to use the touchscreen when you’re all sweaty.
The new iPod Nano has a suggested retail price of Php7,990 (8GB) or Php9,790 for the 16GB and comes in seven colors.
Hi I am so happy I found your web site, I really found you by accident, while I was
browsing on Digg for something else, Regardless I am here now and would just like to say many thanks for a remarkable post and a all
round entertaining blog (I also love the theme/design), I donÂ’t have time to browse
it all at the moment but I have bookmarked it and also included your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back
to read a great deal more, Please do keep up the fantastic work.
some guys are missing the point or these guys want em features crammed up in one device. I have an ipad 1 and 2. I don’t use an iphone because it is an ipod touch with a flimsy phone feature. then I use mac and macbook pro. the 6G ipod nano sits perfectly in its niche of providing music during lazy weekend jogs or quick weekday workouts. ipod touch is too bulky for just music. if i want to get around apple apps then i will use my ipad because it provides HD versions of the apps.
You suck @fox like nano 6gen sucks!
This is the most sucks of all sucker nano that apple built. Very bad, very dissapointing. I would rather go for creative mp3 player over this nano 6th gen sucker!
i like the the 6th gen nano. i can use it as an music device and i can use it as a watch… and thieves now dont bother to get it if they thinks its just a cheap watch.. its like the cheap watch i see on the market..
lolz.. i’d rather take the ipod touch 4th gen for this.. looks crap to me.. price diff with the ipod touch 8gb is just a few clicks.. plus the ipod touch packs a lot than this one..
Very handy and cheap. :-P
wow ginawa na nilang touchscreen lahat…
the nano 6th gen is a champ in the anorexic department— if you think ipods are created for the sole existence of pleasing yo’ ears… this is heaven sent…. but if you prefer nanos to play videos, play fm, podcasts, and movies.. the 5th gen is a sure fire winner…. i think the nano 6th gen is greedily placed on “musicmaniacism” alone…
and nothing else… kaya dont expect it to be anything else than what it is made to do..
Thanks for the review. I planning to get one for my 6 years old daughter. :)
If this is the route that Apple plans to take with the Nano series then it might make sense to discontinue the shuffle series altogether and just stick with the Nano/Touch lineups in the foreseeable future for Apple’s media players.
The Nano can cater to casual music lovers while the iPod Touch can address consumers who want the complete multimedia experience. While the previous generations of the Nano seemed to address the middle-ground for those looking for an affordable PMP, the price point probably had more people saving up for the more feature-rich 8gb version of the iPod Touch.
Kinda makes sense, although we’d probably have to wait and see on this.
Hi! Just got an iPod nano 6G. I love it! It’s so small so I can listen to music anywhere! I have an iPhone and I kinda have a hard time listening to music using it. Texts/calls usually interrupt my listening pleasure and it’s just too big to lug around.
Loving the 6th gen nano!!!
the new ipod nano for more convenient to use because its small size.. and its not like a shuffle that you cannot select a song that you want.. i have this one..
You guys are missing the whole point. It’s all about the form factor. Did you forget what nano stands for? You should go visit the local apple store and check it out before speaking out.
I’ve waited for a year to wait for the 6th gen. Nagtiis ako na hindi bilhin ang 5th gen tapos ngayon ganito lang? After a year bumili na ako ng 5th gen. 6th gen nano for me is not a nano. Much more of a shuffle.
fore free?
I’m a fan of Apple but I think this is the DOA device Steve Jobs is referring to on his speech.
I’d kind of like this model since i use it purely for music in the car. at least it can be totally hidden from car thieves unlike the ipod 4th gen that i’m using right now. generally, i loved the nano series against the classic due its size.
now if only they come out with a larger capacity…
@Leo.. dont underestimate the fact that 10% of Phil population belongs to the rich, which easily translates to 7-8Million potential consumers. Aside from the increasing income of the middle class who’s willing to spend their extra disposable income to technology.
Apple (or any company for that matter), dont have to target the whole population in the country, they just need to target those who can afford.
A lot of people seem to hate the new nano because of the lack of video recording and playback.
But for people like me who use the nano purely as a music player (mainly plugged in my car’s aux in and sometimes for sports, nothing else) this is the best version yet!!!
Its the smallest and has the longest battery power perfect for my use.
My 1st gen and 2nd gen nanos will now be thrown in the garage sale :)
I never bothered to look at the shuffle since you cannot choose what songs you want.
I never bothered to look at the ipod classic/itouch as well since they’re too big.
I think extending the screen a little bit more would make the design a whole lot better (2.4″ would be ok I guess). This would extend the body allowing for controls on the side. Then masaya na ang mas marami satin hehe.
@IC DeaDPiPoL
look for those features on the nano 7g or the nano 6gs.. typical apple!
nywy, i think this is the real “nano” and apple was just late to realized it.. hehehe! may ipod na si dagul!
Dapat rinelease nlang ito with a Bluetooth feature. combined with a wrist strap into a wristwatch/mp3 player and a bluetooth headset/headphone.
@manaka_junpei
Afaik this nano doesn’t support video playback
Wasting money on the small screen, either go with the shuffle or pony up for the Touch.
Sir, Nakakapag download po ba ng games para sa nano 5th gen? San po? Thanks.
makakanood ka ba nang anime gamit nito, puny screensize, parang gamit pang-transformation bilang mahou shoujo
as usual.. another very expensive crap from apple.
nagtataka lang ako, pinas, being one of the poorest contry.. ang dami pa rin naloloko for this kind of over-priced crap.
@braindead – it’s an old feature that’s been mentioned in the 5th gen review here.
I agree. If I would buy a new iPod Nano, I’ll choose the 5th gen rather than this one.
i was waiting for the review of the pedometer. why no mention of it? :(
6th generation nano has lots of new features added. ipod comes with buit in touch screen, fm radio and more battery backup. this is must in an mp3 player
ang mahal naman
–“a camera would make this little thingie kewl!”
@Guy Radaza
pang scandal? hahaha nice one!
–“@quobetah – like I said, you can already do all that with the iPod Shuffle.”
anyway.. i think this new ipod nano is made for people who needs a small device with a screen, unlike the ipod shuffle.
may mga taong mapili pa naman sa songs na gusto nila pakinggan. of course a screen is better than having a hard time “searching” it from the shuffle.
i believe mali ang positioning ng “Video/Camera” function in the previous iPod Nano.
Ngayon, malinaw na.. kung gusto mo ng camera, internet, etc.. get an Ipod Touch.
i like the design of the new iPod Nano, small device with Screen.
i think with the addition of built-in speaker and a camera would make this little thingie kewl! but until then, it’s no better than any other mp3 players around… just my opinion though
@tipler – thanks for the help.
this is just a mess:
” It does not look anything similar to its predecessor not any other iPods before it. ”
maybe:
It does not look anything like its predecessor nor any other ipods.
@quobetah – like I said, you can already do all that with the iPod Shuffle.
@Game Rumble – I think you need to have a US iTunes account to be able to get the paid downloads.
It makes perfect sense for people who uses this for just simply listening to music..being that small and having a clip makes this device “invisible”..just like a watch. Instead of the older nano where you have to put it in your pocket or buy a strap to attach it anywhere.
And speaking of watch..clip this in a strap and it could be the geekiest iWatch ever!

Hi Abe,
As for the iPod Nano 5g, if you ever bought a game on iTunes did you notice that buying a game is totally disabled when your country is set to Philippines? So I was just stuck with 2 games for the iPod Nano 5g. I’m not sure how that is gonna change for the 6g in iTunes… It’s very annoying.
Although the nano is not meant for gaming (I guess), it would sure enhance our gaming experience with the new touch screen. Is it even multitouch? Not that it matters for a small screen like this…
Totally agree with the form factor.
