Shree Eco Visionary (SEV) of Nepal has developed battery-powered vehicles from ordinary car batteries. All the more we should be convinced that high-tech innovations can be developed via low-tech means. Their 3-wheeler electric vehicles have been plying the streets of Kathmandu on AC power since 2004.
The vehicles run on 2 packs of 6 batteries — one on the front and another at the back side. The charger can be hooked up on regular house sockets (15 amps) for around 7 to 8 hours.
Speed can reach up to 70 kmph. Power consumption costs about $2.50 per 60 km. Equivalent gas consumption is about 29 kms. per liter (at current gas price of Php52/liter).
Each vehicle costs about $13,500 a pop — a bit pricey but the savings could offset the initial investment.

Aja Lapus says:
Ahh, now I get what you mean. Sorry ’bout the confusion. :D
Abe Olandres says:
It’s actually 29kms per Php52 (or 1 liter of gas). So 29km/liter is quite efficient. These battery-powered cars don’t have emissions as well so you got almost zero carbon footprint.
Aja Lapus says:
Yuga, did you mean 29 km per $2.50? Because, our car could only get up to 10 km per liter. So a 29-km per liter car would be so efficient, you wouldn’t need those battery-powered cars. :)
Mike says:
The battery should be given also some consideration coz this kind of batteries are the deep cycle type which is quite expensive when its time for replacement.
