The Cheapest Laptops: The sub-25k Round-Up

The Asus Eee PC 900 12 will officially launched today and the retail price hasn’t been finalized yet. Though initial report from the inside is that it will be at Php24,995, several units available in stores tagged them up to Php28,000+. So, I’ve rounded a list of sub-25k laptops from several name brands to see how they measure up.

The Asus Eee PC, despite it’s small form factor, has already encroached on the market of cheap low-end laptop market. In our round-up I’ve include various laptop brands with their specs and SRP.

The list includes Asus, Acer, HP, Compaq, IBM, Lenovo, MSI, Packard Bell, Neo, Blue, ECS and Prestigio. Didn’t include some of the less familiar ones. While the models indicated above are quite old (2 to 3 year-old models), they’re still widely available in the market and are priced under Php25,000.

The ECS G320 is already priced at the same level as the Asus Eee PC 701 and was said to be the cheapest laptop back in mid-2005 retailing for just Php29,995 when it came out.

Note: Price lists were taken from PC Express, PC Corner and Rising Sun Computers.

hello!!! well I just bought a redfox 1020i 10lcd 80gig capacity 1gig ram not bad for P18,500.00 ther r 3 colors available in the market; black, red and white I bought the black one. I’m using it for almost 1 month so far so good. very handy. originaly the os was linux but can be upgraded to xp. I enjoyed it light and easy to used. but so far my comment was the battery it only last for 2hrs. is it really the same as the other brands notebook type laptops?

  13. Alberto says:

With too many cheap laptops available, one cannot help but be confused which are good buys. A buyer should have a definite idea of brand, screen display size, processor, ram, HDD, accessories etc.I was wondering if an existinglaptop can be made faster using the ram stick mentioned in some articles I’ve read.

  14. Michael O. Bennett says:

I need to know if the laptop price list you have at the top of this page is up to date and units are stil available. Are those your leanest , meanest prices? Thanks.

  15. john says:

    hi guys!

please help me where to buy cheap laptops that are good qualities especially from DELL and ACER.

  16. mitch002 says:

Wait for the HP 2133 to hit the stores in the Philippines soon, it has taken USA by storm. right now they have a 1 month backorder. That laptop is the HP version of the Asus EEEPC 900.

    Specs:
    Via Processor 1.2 Ghz
    1 Gb Ram
    8.9 inch screen
    aluminum case (looks like macbook)
    120 gb hard disk space
    Linux OS
    Wifi

    it cost $549 at http://www.hp.com
    roughly 23k.
well its a better buy if its the same price in the Philippines when it will be released. Asus will sure feel the hurt coz it only sport a 12 and 20gb hard drive

  17. num_lock_er says:

ECS w600x Pentium M, 512mb, 128mb VRAM dedicated ATIX700, 80gb, dvdrw, 15.4. 25T pesos only at pccorner/laptopking. Upgrade the ram to 1gb/2gb and you can run vista smoothly.

  18. BrianB says:

There are under 25k laptop with decent processors and 1gb ram. Just shop around. May mga flyers dyan.

  19. JC John SESE Cuneta says:

Wow, the Philippines is still selling “IBM” branded PCs. Lenovo is the new brand since the merging a few years back.

That’s why I love Lenovo other than it being Chinese and the great features, it is an IBM product as well.

  20. jhay says:

I bought the Compaq Presario c765tu for just Php25k, the same unit I blogged about a few weeks back.

It gives much more bang for your buck than an Asus Eee PC 900 which is at the same SRP.

Then again, it all depends on your needs and preferences. Need a decent mobile workstation, get an HP, Lenovo or Acer etc. If you want something to be a “lifestyle” device go get the Asus Eee PC 900.

There are plenty of choices for everyone.

  21. Alfie Miras says:

gee.. all of them are wide screen. DO you have weight comparison?

  22. Abe Olandres says:

@dre, You can buy 1GB of RAM for as low as Php1,000 a stick.

  23. Andre says:

If you look at all those, they have little RAM, which is important on Windows XP and slower processor systems. The eeePC 900 comes with 1GB of RAM, how much more will all of those systems cost to come with 1GB of RAM? Asus should price the eeePC around 22-23k, else it will be cheaper to import from HK or Taiwan. A good comparison for these laptops would be benchmarks, then you would know which one would give you the best bang for your buck. Not to mention the eeePC can be held in one hand like a paperback book.

  24. Erin says:

at least the eee 901 price is getting lower. when i last looked at the pccorner preselling price, it pegged the amount in the Php30K-35K range. right now the link was showing the price of both configuration to be Php29K.

i am still holding up the purchase of an ultraportable until they come with the next gen ULV processors (either Intel Atom or VIA Isaiah) so the battery capacities can be maximized. the MSI Wind is reported to still be on track for its June release and early trackers are pegging the price at around US$650.

    ciao!

  25. Abe Olandres says:

RAM is so cheap now. Got me a 4GB (2x2GB sticks) for around Php3,600.

  26. the jester-in-exile says:

best buy would be prestigio, then… add a little more to upgrade to 512 MB memory?
