I didn’t knew GE (General Electric) had a camera line until I got this GE X5 digital camera in the package. Surprisingly, the GE X5 is not only a capable point-and-shoot camera with manual controls but very affordable too.

And it’s not just your typical rangefinder camera too. Encased in hard plastic body, the GE X5 looks like a mini-dSLR with its large extending lens (also has the same form factor as the Panasonic GF1 or the Canon Powershot G11).
It comes with a built-in flash that flips from the top section though there’s no hotshoe available for external flash.
The focal length of the lens is from 27mm to 405mm (35mm equivalent) which is why the lens extends more than twice the width of the camera.
The controls at the back are laid out in a familiar way that it was easy to figure it out without referring to the manual. And while you need an SD card to store images and videos, the camera has a small 18MB internal storage just in case you need it.
There’s also manual controls to set the camera but you can always revert to the presets when shooting photos.
The GE X5 doesn’t use any proprietary battery but instead relies on 4 x AA batteries for power. The GE X5 retails for Php10,995 in stores.

My X500 has same focus problem, but it’s only at infinity(over 50 meters)when in middle of zoom range. At wide angle and full tele it is ok. At distances under 50 meters it is ok. However, as a workaround, if I set it to mid-zoom and infinity as soon as the camera is powered on, it WILL work. It just fails if I have used other zoom and distance settings before I slide to mid-zoom while powered on.

I purchased my GE x5 about 1.5 years ago. I use it for work and pleasure. The 15x magnification is useful. The use of AA batteries is a plus for me as this camera stays in my truck always and I don’t have to worry about a charger. It had always taken satisfactory pictures until about the last 6 months. It now loses time and date info whenever the battery door is opened or when left in the case for a period of time without use, then it won’t function until the correct time and date is programed or you accept the wrong date stored in the camera. Most of the photos I take at work require a correct time and date stamp so the camera has to be reprogramed before use at work. Also the camera refuses to autofocus correctly at longer focal lengths occasionally (the autofocus square in the view finder will be red instead of green). It seems the only way to get around this is to go to a wider angle shot, then it will autofocus correctly.

Btw, ever since pinalitan yung SD card ko, i never had problems with my X500 anymore. I love the camera… although I agree with what the others say here – get a spare set of batteries. I suggest you have your MMC replaced, baka yun lang yun.

about sa naghahang. maybe ang cause nyan ay yung adaptor nya kung mmc ang card. madali kasi masira yun. ginagamit ko din dati ang ganun kahit sa psp naghahang kasi nga ang sira dahil sa adaptor.kaya maganda kung sd card lang talaga gagamitin.

Mine’s ok na. I had it replaced with a new MMC and so far I’m loving it. Hindi na siya nagh-hang although, you really have to have a back up battery because it drains faster. Maybe you should take it back to where you bought the cam and ask for a MMC replacement. At first I though it was because of the camera, pero I tried changing the MMC and I think it was just because of that. Right now my camera is still in very good condition and the outputs are impressive.

Same problem here, ma’am. Bought the X500 4 days ago because it’s a GE and took it for a spin on a trip.
The camera frequently freezes or hangs. I wasn’t able to test its techy features because it’s no fun disengaging the battery cover to shut it down and start again.
Seems like there’s something wrong with the software or memory since there’s 2 of us already. Can’t be coincidence.
BTW, bought the X500 after reading about the X5 in yugatech. Been a constant reader since 2009. :D
I just bought a GE x5 a couple of days ago. I was a previous owner of a DSLR. I travel a lot and I had a hard time using the DSLR because of of its weight and size. the GE x5 is one helluva bridge camera with slr capabilities…2 thumbs up for this camera

using panorama is si sensitive dapat nakalinya yung object sa next subject na kukunan mo kundi mag missed ung line nya. makikita ung line sa LCD.
question: meron na ba ditong may GE X500? ibought mine last sat. same features as X5 pero 16mp lang siya (yes, same price din). it was pretty impressive. i actually liked it more than my tita’s Nikon D3100 DSLR. my problem is, naghhang yung camera. ithought baka it was just because of the 4gb MMC na kasama sa package so iformatted the MMC. after i formatted the SD tinest ko siya. hindi na naghhang but may times na nagccard error and “Cannot write to memory card.” triny ko din yung 1gb ko pero so far wala naman akong problem. did you guys had a problem with X5 (like, kung naghhang din ba siya)? If so, what did you do? I’ll have the MMC replaced later pero i’ll have the camera checked na rin. Any advice what can i do if ever mag-hang ulit yung cam? ihope you can make a review about X500 as well.

been using the GE X5 for a few months now. and am lovin it. the battery life is very good. i use a 2450MAH AA batt. with one full charge it lasts me around 6-8 hours of shooting. adjustments though should be made with the AF, plus there is a bit delay with the capture of the image from the shutter press. but one can get used with it upon use. all in all this is a true value for money. a camera that takes great pictures, long zoom, full manual controls in a very cheap price.

I purchase this camera at wellcom but after a week, four dead pixel appear on my camera. The bad thing is walang palang may alam ng service center ng GE camera. =( Kung ibabalik ko naman sa wellcom, almost a month before ko mabawi yung camera. =( Badtrip talaga!!! Ang hirap hanapin ng service center nila!!! =( Sana may makatulong po sakin. TIA.

@chase this is a bridge camera, meaning its features are in between regular “point and shoot” cams and the “DSLR”. it has an auto mode and full manual mode. this is best for those beginners in photography, who want to try it as a hobby. practice muna sa manual settings, then it’s up to you to buy the mainstream DSLR cam if you wannna gert serious with it.
Have the white one for about 5 months now, so far, it’s good. it takes good pictures. if you are thinking of buying this camera, but still needs more info, you can check out our page at FB, “GE X5 users and enthusiasts”. you can find first hand info from actual users and owners of this cam. :)

I’m kinda confused. Girlteki said that this camera has a 15x optical zoom while here it says 5.7 optical zoom????? which one is correct?

As for battery concerns, you can save battery life if you use the electonic viewfinder, and not much on the LCD. Also, the battery life depends on the capacity of your battery, and if you have fully charged them before using.

I bought this cam last Sept. 3 at Camerahaus SM for P11,995. Was one of the firsts who bought this, there was no free phone yet that time. :(
SO far, I’m loving it. It’s a powerful cam for a beginner like me. What I like most is the 15x optical zoom. It’s a bridge camera, so you can choose between auto and full manual mode, where you can play with the settings for more creativity.
You can check our group at facebook, it’s called “GE X5 Users and Enthusiasts.” You can find loads of info and hundreds of sample shots from there. What’s good about it,the info you will get is from acutal X5 users themselves.

@tristan – depends on the battery rating of the AA you used with it (I used 2700mAh with this one but there are 900mAh batteries out there).

I was suppose to buy this but my friend has one and he experiences the occasional seizes of Guards in Malls because the camera looks like a DSLR. So I don’t wan’t those things to happen to me, so I stick to a regular point and shoot.
