AdSense Alternatives Revisited

Recent developments have forced a lot of webmasters and publishers alike to re-think their online monetization strategies. The PR penalty, the changes in AdSense clickable ads, and an impending SERPs penalty has allowed a lot of us to explore other alternatives besides AdSense and TLA.

Over two years ago, I posted an entry about potential AdSense alternatives publishers can experiment on. Today, the monetization landscape has expanded fairly competitively to other forms — CPM, CPA, etc.

There are tons of other alternatives out there. It’s just a matter of finding the right one and exploring which ones are best-fit for our publications and niches. Retz has been very successful with BidVertiser (last time I saw his cheque, it was in the 6 figures still). Rickey shares he’s doing good with ADSDAQ and BlueLithium. Marghil says Widgetbucks is a promising new option (until recently) and Connie is doing really well with Amazon Associates.

Several other bloggers have also shared their relative success with Adbrite, Chitika and Kontera. And yes, we all wanted to get majority of our ads direct from advertisers. The earlier we discover our independence with Google AdSense, the less worry we have with whatever restrictions it imposes on partner Publishers (which is us).

So, let’s all share some of our relative successes outside of AdSense and TLA. Which programs have you had some progress and which ones are getting you some residual income?

Please share your top 3 revenue source aside from AdSense, TLA (and other link marketplaces) — mine is AdMob, Kontera, and AdBrite. FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN) until Google bought it and advertisers fled.

  1. Google has been getting some bad press lately from the closing of Google Video and their perceived heavy handedness in dealing with adsense publishers. I wonder if this is the beginning of the end of the Google honeymoon…

  2. Really, did the Google buyout make FeedBurner advertisers leave? Or did Google themselves close down the program?

  3. My top three non-AdSense money earners for my blogs would be:

    1. Chitika
    2. Linkshare
    3. Commissions from Real Estate Sales of property I have featured on my sites.

Usually, though, AdSense is still my number 1 earner.

  4. I tried Kontera for a month. It was giving some good click-throughs but those are probably from accidental clicks. The rate is quite low so its not advisable on low traffic sites like mine.

    Anyone trying LinkWorth?

  5. beside adsense, i’m earning quite with:
    1. bidvertiser
    2. widgetbucks
    3. direct advertiser

  6. This is one of our most popular posts this month, linked by engadget and gizmodo (both!). A media player with a 12 MP camera. Yes, 12 MP and it costs P5k only

  7. Good to hear this post. I was a victim of invalid clicks from my other website. Google Adsense was doing fine with me, until one day, the shocking email came out – telling me that my account was involved with invalid clicks activity which was not true, I can’t prove the scenario to big “G” for my innocence. I tried my best but no luck on re-instating the account. I am still lucky to get my last earning sent to my bank account (BA), huh, it was my last $$$$ from big “G”. Since then I looked for an alternatives and found out that these 3 is a good alternatives.

(1.) Adbrite – is giving me good $$$$ in all my sites.
(2.) Bidvertiser – Very good in paying high bid clicks.
(3.) Amazon Associates and Commission Junction – Both is doing well.

I tried others like Kontera, Widgetbucks, Ads-Click, Auction Ads, ValueClick, and many more and found out the 3 above is doing well with me.

  8. It’s good to hear that there are alternatives to adsense. Actually, I’m about to launch my blog in two weeks time.

    OT : to BrianB
Please don’t get me wrong but I notice you sometimes just post on comments and just say something that are not related to the current post. hmmm self promoting huh. peace :)

  9. Me ann, only 5k pesos for a 12MP camera with a mdeia player. That should be relevant to any post.

  10. Gee we even got linked at Crave http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9826810-1.html?tag=recentPosts) but not much improvement i the traffic. Just another 1k unix on top of the average.

  11. Hi Abe, just curious since you’re promoting AdAuction too and it isn’t mentioned in your post. Is it doing well?

  12. Not doing well for me. Only had a couple hundred pesos from it.

  13. 1. Amazon Associates
    2. Widgetbucks
    3. Island Rose

  14. Lol at this: “FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN) until Google bought it and advertisers fled.”

Im a late joiner… so no entries for me. And some of my affiliates/associates, I still haven’t concentrated on, like my Amazon and YesAsia.

  15. the best ang mga paid to blog like:

    1.sponsoredreviews
    2.smorty
    3. reviewme

i dont use payperpost, bcoz i love google eh
the best ang mga paid to blogs lalo na kung marami kang blogs

(i recommend SR, i got $50 a week!, compare to $30 for 3 months in adsense!)

plus 2 weeks lng nasa paypal mo na

  16. Hi Abe,

Your posts are really very informative and life savers or blog saver I might say. :-)

I am new to blogging. Last month, I received a letter from Google that my adsense was disabled. I did not know what that means but when I looked at my blog, my adsense were not appearing and I cannot loged in to my adsense account anymore. I researched on how to reach adsense and fortunately, I found a link on their page. I asked them why my adsense were disabled. I also researched what disabled adsense means, to my dismay, I found out that it means I am banned from using adsense. :-(

I was waiting for a reply from Google, and I am not sure if someone read my email or it just went to their spam folder or what. No one from Google even cared to reply, inform, or even educated me on what, why, and since when my adsense was banned.

I researched more about being banned in adsense and I found out that there are many innocent bloggers that were banned from using adsense because of lack of education.

Based from my research and hypothesis, my guess why my adsense was banned is because of click frauds, which if only adsense cared enough to listen, would definitely clear things up. I usually update my adsense, check email, and constantly change blog theme at work. I also promote my blog using my friendster account at work (during break time – we have a nook at work where we could surf). Unfortunately, most of my 90% of my friends in friendster are my officemates. That should explained the click fraud – same IP address, our IP address is also dynamic. But I never asked anyone to click my ads. I only promoted my blog to them so I could have readers.

For the first time in my life, I felt I was accused of a grave crime that I do not have any knowledge of. I panic, so I set my blog’s settings to “authorized persons can only view my blog” just to stop first my officemates visiting my blog or to people who have the same IP address as mine or close to my ip address.

I was very disappointed and too ashamed to even discussed in my blog about what happened to my adsense. :-( I think being accused of committing fraud click without any explanation or whatsoever is a grave accusation. I am an honest person and had never committed any dishonest act in my entire life. I was very affected by what Google did to the extend of not updating my blog since I was blocked from adsense.

Your post convinced me that there is still life after Google adsense. I should not stop blogging just because my adsense was banned.

So today, after a long thought, I am removing my “only authorized persons can view this blog” settings in my blog. Thanks for the tips for other alternatives that I can use for my blog.

Keep posting interesting articles and more power to you!
