I’m suspending the Pinoy Top Blogs project indefinitely. The total number of blogs (2,283) it currently tracks is already too high that it crashes the server almost everyday. That’s the reason I also stopped approving additional registrations there.
I’m already spending $200 a month for the dedicated (with almost no income, well if you consider $6/month from Adsense an income) server. The rig is an AMD Opteron 246 (2×2.0GHz) with 2GB of RAM. An additional 2GB of memory will cost me a $600 (one-time) and hopefully that would solve the current server crisis. So, unless I could get a sponsor or an advertiser for that site which will cover the amount for the upgrade, I’m shutting it down indefinitely.
If you think you have a spare server that can carry the load (preferrably dual Xeon or Dual Opteron with 4GB of RAM) and would like to help out continue the project, I’ll be glad to offload the site to you. :)
P.S.
And no, I don’t think DH or MT will host this site for spare change.
sayang naman ng project na yan.

well, how about several suggestions like
a. How about further optimization of server process loads and process threads by defining sql threshold queries and restrictions. If certain CPU load or SQL treshold queries are met, automatic temporary denial of access would be displayed to end users, say Come back after a minute or so, load maintenance is currently in effect something like that.
Atleast, this way you can avoid server crashes, system reboots, downtime. Thus prolong server uptime and sql data reliability.
b. How about creating additional swap file space and RAM disk space from your harddisk instead of additional physical RAM to achieve higher swap memory resources and availability. Say 10GB of additional swap file?
Additional swap are handled by linux server almost identically with physical RAM, there’s a bit difference though but it works out right and doesn’t cost you a bit considering you have more disk space left.
c. How about gathering country wide sponsorship like Philippines local TV station or radion station in return for permanent link or 100×100 image from this site. A very nice and polite letter will do just fine address to their CEOs. :) What is P100 peso of donation in one month from all these nationwaide TV and radio broadcasters?
d. How about gathering old phased PII and PIII PCs and creating a clustered and distributed group of old machines providing round-robin load balancing among old phased PCs aimed to serve millions of SQL queries and website request? Old PCs are cheap anyway but can be a supercomputer when clusterically distributed with more old PCs too – sort of mini super computer PTS!
e. Uh, some willing to contribute politicians perhaps? LOL
Imagine a 70,000 hits a day for the upcoming needed “Presidential Electionaryo$” exposure$ is really high for atleast for one month!!! Talk about their pres candidates’ pictures pinned down around this site corners exposed to 70,000 daily viewers! Oh mama, that’s a real wide opener, LOL.
f. How about a 80×80 JPG box for leading Philippine banks?
g. Am not sure about this one in Philippines, but a perma donate link from here to leading Philippine Charity institutions or Philippines cancer donation groups. And for every click on that link, you get 1 peso and the rest goes to Philippines charity institutions. I received one kind of email like that and it was not a spam email as confirmed by my friend overseas located near the email address.
i. Maybe more wishful thinking.
Go up man. You’re doing great for all of us! Keep it up!
Just dropping by.

Why not promote your blogsite via your profile, creating a bloggers group and blog about your blog site on my website. It has international audience, and hopefullu your site will be visited. You can create the link to your site via the blog you’ll write. That’s all, I just thought it’s one way of helping out my fellow pinoys but obviously it’s undeniably one way of building up my members list on my site.
Hi,
My impression of PBS is that it’s a portal for bloggers, not a blog.
Pwede po bang magpa-activate ng blog :) Baka pwede na pong matanggal yung suspension ng PBS simula pa noong December 2006 :D Yun lang po. Maraming salamat! ;)
PinoyBlogoSphere.com

Hoping my site will be activated soon, dont see any reason y it is suspended except not yet have the so called “sharing”..but will do later..thanks and Godbless.
Hi! It was being used to track the PMT forum. PinoyTopBlogs is for blogs only.
i noticed that www.pinoymoneytalk.com is not anymore in the list? was it banned? why?
My site http://philmoney.blogspot.com is also suspended after many, many months.. I hope it could be unsuspended soon since I noticed it’s inching its way up the ranks.. :)
http://onlooker-josh.blogspot.com is still suspended.
ei yuga, suspended pa din since 2006 ang aking http://pinoyjoke.blogspot.com site
hi bossing. pa activate naman po ng macuha.com, suspended pa rin eh. thanks! :D

waaa. i am still suspended… :(
i hope you activate my account.. I have nothing to share as of the moment.
what should i do for my blog to be activated? it’s been a long long time. shall wait for a miracle? ;)
hey my blog is suspended. i dont know why and will it still activate? when? pls answer asap!!! tnx
hmm… my blogs are still suspended though
It’s up na? My site is still suspended. :(
So, if it’s back up now… does this mean that SOMEONE will finally unsuspend my blog? I signed up on Sep. 22, 2006… and since then, I’ve been suspended. :(
Am I not Filipino enough for the Philippine blogosphere? If thoust prick me, do I not bleed adobo? (Ya, that sounded a lot funnier in my head. And a few seconds later, it just sounds lame now.) :p
I guess my dual-citizenship and eligibility to vote doesn’t count.
It’s back up! hurray! Does that mean the problem has been solved? :)
I believe the Pinoy Top Blog project is too good a thing for the local blogosphere to just let go. I think the best solution would be to relaunch it and each registrant shall pay one-year subscription pay like say 1$ or 2$. I hope it could be paid thru bank transfer coz I don’t have credit cards. So I hope Yuga is willing to relaunch it later on.
Hi Yuga – Luddite that I am, I have no technical solution for you alas. But if you decide to accept donations or registration fees from bloggers, count me in. I’d be more than happy to help out.
Now we know why metrics sites like Performancing have trouble…
I think among other who measure the Pinoy Top Blogs.. It is in PTB which is very hard to get on Top that only means Pinoy Top Blogs has a community of Bloggers. So How sad it’s going down… Hello calling advertisers why don’t you share..
siguro maganda ung suggestion na magbabayad na lang ng registration fee good for one year ang registered members.
$1 is much affordable. Pwede ngang $2 or $3.
I love PTB! that’s sad
sayang naman. if the offers of hosting don’t materialize, maybe you can start with a paypal donation button. that will make it easier for foreign-based pinoy bloggers to make contributions…
Hi Wilson,
FYI. The stats shown below reflects the total aggregate hits for the tracker.php which everyone copies & pastes in their blogs. It does not reflect the pageviews of the site itself (which gets just below 1,000 a day). As for bandwidth, it’s just 1GB/day.
Pinoy Top Blogs is mySQL intensive, a number cruncher, so it needs a lot of RAM and CPU power. The CPU usage is dependent on the traffic the blogosphere it is measuring so at times it averages 200% (still ok) and on other times up to 5000%, after which it crashes.
Maybe we can do something that you can benefit from it as well, like advertising in exchange for the add’l 2GB sponsorship.
Abe,
What is the current bandwidth utilization of Pinoy top blogs? My concern here is that the bandwidth may be too high.
I can offer to host it and sponsor the 2gb ram as well.
Measuring the Pinoy Blogosphere… an interesting problem!
Just when pinoytopblogs got mentioned in Marie Claire magazine… :(
Abe, sent you an email @ your gmail.
Do you have the load average of the server?
that really sucks.i guess lauren will forever #1.
Ack, your site is that Popular Abe! LOL. I heard from a certain somebody that setting up forums (with AdSense) can be quite profitable. Maybe you need to add a forum somewhere for your PInoyTopBlogs site.
Anyway, I hope you don’t mind me posting this story on Noypi.com.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. The donations might just work if most of the active users there help out. I’m just concerned that if I continue spending for this project, I’ll end up spending a whole lot more later on once it grows much bigger.
@ TIB: not sure which stats you were referring to (mySQL & CPU load) but here’s a screenshot of the Awstats for December (link). That’s an average 68,700 uniques a day with 225,000 pageviews for total of 7 Million pageviews a month.
Will you be able to provide stats (maybe screenshots) for those interested?
You know what? I think Leo’s idea might just work. Ever heard of Mugglenet.Com? It’s a Harry Potter fan site. The web site had too much load too, like 2,000++ people online at the same time on the average. The guys who ran it asked for the visitor’s help. Ayun. They’re keeping it afloat without any cost at all from their part—yung mga little donations ang bumuhay.
HI Abe. As I suggested before, and as others are suggesting here, each one may donate an amount to keep the site running. :-)
Sorry to hear this. I wish I could help. If there will be no sponsor or someone who will offer a server, we can do Leo’s suggestion of contributing $1 and I’m some of us can afford more than that, right?
We all benefit from this project so we might as well help. :)
I’m sure you’ll find a sponsor soon Abe. Let’s all help out!
..bank account#, i mean.
If we can donate $1 each for all registered blogs that would be $2,283, more than enough to help Abe shoulder the cost for additional server memory. I’ll start with $20.
Master Yuga, please email me your account#.
May I suggest self-sufficiency? Bloggers know very well it’s a great way to promote Pinoy blogging in general, as well as individual blogs so …. why not pay to register your blog and pay an annual subscription fee going forward?
@wyzemoro: it’s using evoTopSites www.evotopsites.com
:( too bad it stopped.
if ganyan lang server ko… i’m willing to share resources. kaso.. indi eh. mahal tlga ang dedicated na dual xeon with 4GB ram.
share naman ng script gamit mo sa PTB… sa wordpress ba yan no? indi naba kayang i optimized ang script?
I also had the same script running in my server and I had to disable the rankings. It’s just way too much load.
Hi Yuga,
I think I can help. Please contact me via email. :)
hm. pity if you do. i hope you do get a sponsor.
(i wonder if the CICT would?)
Whoah! No wonder the button has not been appearing on my blog for a couple of days now.
On the bright side though, it shows just how the growth of the Philippine blogosphere has been, which is great of course!
I hope the project resumes again, or maybe we could organize a drive, campaign or something to find funds or to find sponsors for the project.
Oh snap! *puts on thinking cap* :)
