Who owns AkoMismo.org?

There’s been some buzz about this new campaign called Ako Mismo which started out as a star-studded TV ad followed by a members-only website.

Nothing wrong with it really. A lot of forums and websites require people to sign up before allowing them to enter and see what’s inside. AkoMismo is also giving away a branded dog tag for members.

This is not uncoommon. Other sites also offer free stuff when you sign up. I used to moderate a forum back in 2001 that pays members a certain amount for every post they make.

One has to admit it’s a clever online marketing gimmick. What put the campaign under scrutiny was the socio-political angle and the secrecy of the organizers behind it.

I don’t think AkoMismo.org site is really that anonymous. Here are some public information about the site:

Domain Registrant: akomismo.org

Tribal DDB

Created March 16, 2009

IP WhoIs: 125.5.116.82
INFOCOM Technologies Inc

Well, at least we know who owns the domain and the ad agency is Tribal DDB (they do digital marketing worldwide) and the server is hosted at the PLDT Vitro data center.

P.S. — About the privacy concern with the alleged Smart/PLDT’s data-mining of personal information, didn’t thousands of people already freely gave those details to Red Mobile/Smart in exchange for a free SIM before?

I’m curious with this “Ako Mismo Dog Tag” that people have been talking about. Even my high school friends we’re selling real dog tags. Without knowing what it is, I searched the net and it looks like a lot of people are looking forward to have one. Is this a trend to the fashionistas around Philippines? You say it’s an organization, then what could their purpose be? I don’t care whether actors or actresses are the ones who’s advertising this dog tags cause well I certainly am not a fan of local artists. :)
Aside from that, what’s with their name as “Ako Mismo” Ako mismo what? If it’s a way of saying “Proud to be a Filipino” then a tag won’t make any difference if the person itself isn’t making any move at all. If it’s that EASY to make a difference then I bet buying a million, no, a trillion or a gazillion of these dog tags…would change the world? Lol. No material thing would help us Filipino to change, it’s up to us if we’ll take action or not. Then, dog tags aren’t necessary. I peeked at ako mismo design and one thing popped up in my mind: the design is so simple that anyone who knows more in making a design can make better ones. Much better that can really symbolize all of the Filipinos in making a change. Want to change something? Then, take action and forget those dog tags. Leave it be with those mutts. :P

nice to read all the comments… interesting. a whole lot of speculations…

unfortunately, most are quick to judge and the more negative the “chismis” the more they believe it. sign of the times i guess. i urge everyone to get their facts straight so they can move forward to better things. some speculations are simply outrageous.

now i’m more amazed to see how blogs and forwarded emails (i hope they’re happy with the attention they’re getting) are now treated as reliable sources when in fact, if you disect their posts/emails and try to imagine they’re thinking process just to arrive at whatever, it screams “I’m confused!” “Help me!” “Where are you taking me!” “This must be evil.. its evil.. huwahahahaha.. let me put my fault finding cap on.. this is too good to be true! something or someone evil is behind this..”(*musical score ala silence of the lambs). sad – how naive. well composed but shallow.

Don’t get me wrong, there are reliable sources such as this blog – yugatech, kudos to you. that’s why i decided to break silence here.

i think ako mismo was suppose to inspire you to be more pro-active… but i can see now that there are still a few of us who would rather be told what to do vs just doing it. think about it… most blogs i’ve read was hitting the true essence of ako mismo – bulls eye! they knew what it was about. they felt it… but the temptation of adding controversy was oh too sweet to resist.

for me, the silence of ako mismo for 3-4 days (i think) was brilliant. the silence was deafening to the point that you can now hear yourself. i’ve seen a couple of blogs who found their way (negative or positive) to this realization – ako mismo. congratulations… now you don’t need someone or something to dictate to you what YOU can or cannot do.

Transparency-wise, it welcomes many critics. But, I hope it won’t be closed.

  31. Chow says:

To the “unnamed” commenter, I will have to quote you here:

“This is exactly what I meant about monopolizing their industry. I always discuss with my foreign co-software developers that this is one trait I hate the most about my fellow Filipinos — CRAB MENTALITY.”

Could you tell us your definition of crab mentality and monopoly? Because last I check, for the majority, it means not letting someone have what they want because they themselves can’t have what those people want. As for monopoly, it simply means of having a great control of an industry. I think those two terms you mentioned are not so related at all. Please correct me if I’m wrong and I’m oh so willing to hear it. It’s a bit confusing, you know.

Btw, I’ve seen your “copy-paste” comment from the link you provided.

Anyway, on to the main concern, *I think* it’s not owned by PLDT/SMART, unless the international “DDB Cares” gave in to a bribe, an x-deal or something else. If PLDT/SMART owns it or has total access to the database, so what? It’s not as if they’ll be able to do something so big to ruin your life. A mobile number, an email address and the city where you are located are harmless compared to having your land line number exposed to strangers. Much more if it’s your home address, right?

Think about it, Google and Yahoo has a lot of information about us. Jobstreet or JobsDB do too. Same goes for PLDT, Smart, Globe, etc. for those who are subscribed to them. Oh, and don’t forget about those community networks like Facebook, Friendster, Multiply, and the list goes on. Shouldn’t we be afraid of them also?

The information might really be used for the 2010 elections if you’re looking at it politically, or advertisements, or whatever. But we won’t know yet since there are no firm evidences of who really owns the site. It’s good to be paranoid once in a while but also try to be an open-minded person. If you guys want answers quickly, then ask the DDB located in Taguig by dropping them a call or ask the KBP (Kapisanan ng Broadcasters ng Pilipinas) about the legitimacy of the movement.

In the end, it’s your own choice. If others wants to join let them be. If others doesn’t want to register, let them be. Everyone has a choice so don’t make others choose what you want for them even if it’s for the betterment of their own welfare. Pwede rin na “Ako mismo ang pipili kung ano ang gagawin ko at gusto ko para sa aking sarili at para sa aking bayan.”

    * I’m not from DDB nor SMART nor PLDT nor am I protecting them. I’m just a normal 20-ish-year-old, freelance web developer, Filipino citizen, trying to voice out my thoughts and opinions. If I am wrong about all these that I’ve written above, please tell me. :)

    FAQs from http://www.akomismo.org

Q: Who is behind the Ako Mismo campaign?
A: DDB, under its Corporate Social Responsibility arm, DDB Cares, is the spirit behind the campaign. For many years now, DDB Cares has been supporting causes it firmly believes in, using its creative and media resources to espouse positive values. From taking care of the environment, to education of children, responsible voting, protection against domestic violence and human trafficking, role of media in shaping society, religious efforts for Veritas and Caritas, and now, this advocacy for hope and empowerment. We do this, pro bono oftentimes, both for our clients and for our own advocacies.

Q: Is Ako Mismo the launchpad of any candidate in the future?
A: No. This is an apolitical effort as it shifts the initiative for change from government and politics to the individual. Although this was an initiative of the agency, it was our hope to get the support of like-minded individuals and companies. We are fortunate that the PLDT Smart foundation has been inspired to support this effort at the very onset and we are encouraged by the interest of many more corporations to contribute to the cause. We realize that the campaign touched a deep chord and could very well be used for commercial or political gain. Which is why we choose our partners and personalities well. We have to make sure that they are true believers and role models for the cause by their life’s example.

Q; How did you choose who to feature in the campaign?
A: We had certain criteria. We wanted to represent different sectors: from celebrities to ordinary folk, from religious to business, students, the academe, and working people. It was also important that whoever we featured genuinely believed in our message, and were already engaged in their own worthwhile advocacies so they could be credible, inspiring role models for others. And because this is an inclusive and apolitical movement, it was also critical that whoever we featured did not have any strong political affiliations. In fact, we were particularly inspired when those we sought and who sought us to be included in the campaign, shared their concern that they not be used for political gain.

Now that we’ve opened up the movement and people are signing up with their personal commitments, however, we anticipate that there will be those who will express views that not everyone will agree with. But so long as we have inspired each person to take it upon himself to do something good, whether it’s a change in attitude or behavior, a commitment to provide financial support to the needy, or support institutions that benefit the community, society, and the country at large, we will have done a good thing.

Q: How has the response been to the campaign?
A: It has been phenomenal. The overwhelming response of people and the tens of thousands who have signed up for their commitments—it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Apart from the sign-ups, we have also been approached by companies who want to do more for the cause, and we are thrilled about this because Ako Mismo is an inclusive movement where the more people we have taking positive action, big or small, the closer we will all be to creating a better future for Filipinos. We believe this is a compelling message that has touched the young.

Q: Are you open to accepting other companies to support the cause?
A: Absolutely. This is the whole point behind Ako Mismo. It is an instrument for unity in a fractious society. As such, we welcome diversity, whether it be individuals, groups, companies or sponsors. The broader our support, the better it is for the advocacy to flourish and be able to support worthwhile socio-civic activities. However, we have to ensure that whoever partners with us is aligned with our vision and that the movement not be commercialized.

Q: The registration for Ako Mismo requires information from those who sign up. Will the database be used for commercial or political gain?
A: No. The basic information we asked for will be used to guide us in the deployment of the dog tags to the right people. The information will also be useful as we mobilize our socio-civic activities, as it will determine where and what projects are relevant in specific areas. It is important to point out that this whole movement is one of volunteerism. And while we hope more people will sign up, or that our members will participate in future activities (the choice of which will be guided by feedback we receive about what matters to them), ultimately each individual has total freedom to decide whether he will participate or not. We are very protective about the information we receive and we have taken security precautions against people accessing the information for their use without our knowledge. We are zealous about protecting the movement from being exposed to those with political or commercial agenda.

Q: People are asking for dog tags and where they can get them?
A: We wanted the dog tags to be a symbol for Ako Mismo and one’s commitment. The dog tag is a military symbol, a commitment to a mission, and we see the advocates as an army of hope. But to be quite honest we didn’t expect the clamor for the dog tags to be this huge. And so we are rushing to produce them in quantities to satisfy the demand. But for sure they will be made available in a few weeks. From the many blogs and comments we received, people wish to pay for them, and for those who do, we will ask only a minimal fee to defray cost, the proceeds of which will go to a respected and established charitable organization. We will identify these organizations soon on our Ako Mismo website.

Q: People are asking where is Ako Mismo leading up to, now that people have become aware and signed up their commitments?
A: Our initial objective was to change people’s attitudes and behavior and encourage belief in themselves and their innate power to make a difference. It is our hope that they will act on their commitments, which is the next step. We will provide a vehicle online for people to share their achievements, and in so doing, get more people inspired and engaged in taking real action. We will also feature real people who have made a difference in society, simple folk who cared enough to use their gifts and resources to serve other people.

One such inspiring story is Efren Penaflorida, who has spent the last ten years of his life travelling the country to teach street children. He does this with very simple implements: a kariton bearing his teaching aids, books and monobloc chairs. Another is Susan Fernandez, a sociologist, teacher, and women’s rights advocate who has spent her life using her music to uplift the plight of women. And we have Filipino talents who have become international stars bringing pride to our country, like Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda. Their stories and their humble circumstances are an inspiration to everyone.

Q: What are the future activities of Ako Mismo beyond creating awareness? Where will you take the movement?
A: We hope to engage more companies in the movement and organize and/or support socio-civic activities in pockets all over the country, guided by the information we receive online about the causes that resonate most consistently among the most number of people. And God-willing, if we are able to raise enough funds through all our activities, we will partner with established and respected socio-civic and charitable organizations that have the infrastructure to reach out to and help the most number of people nationwide. We are in the process of evaluating this now.

  37. Unnamed says:

    @loadex,

the thing is, they’re not using any SMS Gateway. of course this small company knew from the very start that these telcos would not approve such application. that is also the reason they use a different approach, and yes, unique technologies provided by foreign companies.

and about that raffle thingy, do you think that the ordinary Juan dela Cruz is still naive to believe there are “real winners” every time these telcos would run contests? unless, of course, you’re one of those who ALWAYS fall for it.

you said that “Smart,Globe and Sun owns the gateway to any SMS services in the Phil.. they can simply pull the plug to stop such innovation, if it starts to be a threat.” This is exactly what I meant about monopolizing their industry. I always discuss with my foreign co-software developers that this is one trait I hate the most about my fellow Filipinos — CRAB MENTALITY.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not bad-mouthing our local telcos. It’s just that truth really hurts. And most of the time, IT HURTS A LOT!

  38. Kapusotkapamilya says:

may bug din yung website. sayang lang ang campaign nila :)

  39. loadex says:

    @Unnamed

I doubt that the small company you know is a threat to the Big Telcos.. as you have posted they are introducing an innovation through SMS..

Smart,Globe and Sun owns the gateway to any SMS services in the Phil.. they can simply pull the plug to stop such innovation, if it starts to be a threat.

If the Akomismo.org is a plot to get data out of each registrant, I highly doubt it also.

Smart can simply raffle off a brand new car plus 1M cash.. and Smart subs simply text their details to a certain number at P2.5 per text.. gaining more data at the same time gaining more profits.

    Who is Behind Ako Mismo?
    DDB CARES

DDB’s newest advocacy campaign has been getting a lot of attention to the agency’s amazement. This has in fact given them more conviction to stand behind their cause and continue their crusade for positive change.

It’s no surprise though that AKO MISMO is arousing a lot of people’s interest. The commercial undeniably stirred very deep patriotic sentiments among the viewing public that immediately thousands went online to check the site and signed up to make commitments.

“We knew we had something great when we came up with the advocacy.”, said Teeny Gonzales, Executive Creative Director of DDB, who heads up the creative team that conceptualized AKO MISMO. “That’s because even among us, the message really resonated. It made us all look deep inside and say, ‘No, we’re not giving up hope.’ ” She said that they then went in search of possible partners for the cause and found the perfect one in PLDT/Smart Foundation.

Members of the team then went on another search. This time for the people who would breathe life into the campaign — people who embodied the message or simply had the conviction to make a commitment to fight apathy. Thus the rich mix of showbiz celebrities, real life heroes as well as regular folk who spoke simply but sincerely in the TV commercial, bringing the point poignantly home.

Susan Dimacali, Vice-Chairman of DDB Group of Companies said, “We were overwhelmed with the positive response and people saying that the campaign made them realize that they should stop complaining and start doing their part. There were a lot who chose to put their cynicism aside and truly support the advocacy. It was amazing and touching reading the wall of commitments on the site. We’re grateful for the support of our partners that has allowed us to reach more people and create a real impact.”

DDB has, in the past, also supported and made campaigns for women’s rights, the preservation of the environment, Caritas as well as responsible voting in the last local elections.

Many are asking what they can look forward to from AKO MISMO. John Lucas, Managing Director of Tribal DDB said, “There is a lot of clamor for the dog tag so, we hear you! We will be announcing soon how you can get those. There are activities lined-up which you also learn more about from the site.”

Clearly, the DDB Team is upbeat and excited about their newest advocacy.
“That’s because,” Dimacali says, this is something really close to our hearts and something that, yes, we truly care about.

    Now, my two cents:

SMART Communications is gathering personal information (particularly mobile numbers and addresses) for their upcoming marketing program — SMS Advertising.

Apparently, a small local company that I know became a threat to SMART and Globe (although Globe hasn’t taken this new marketing path yet) when this small company started introducing a new innovation in Philippine marketing, and that is through SMS.

Are we going to let SMART Communications make a BIG fool out of us? And how pathetic it is that these BIG players got threatened by a small and newly established company! It’s time that we STOP the BIG companies from monopolizing their industries. Our country, the Philippines, is the living proof of the saying: The rich becomes richer, and the poor, well, becomes poorer.
