Nook eReader: Barne’s & Noble Kindle-Killer

The Kindle has a brand new rival — Barne’s and Noble introduced the Nook e-Reader to compete with Amazon. At $259, it’s priced competitively too.

The Nook comes pre-installed with Google Android OS and will comes with a 3G SIM from AT&T.

Aside from that, there’s also a built-in WiFi. Internal storage is just 2GB but that can be bumped to 16GB via microSD card. Display is also 6″ just like the Kindle.

Amazon quickly responded and gave back $20 in rebates to all those who ordered the International version of the Kindle. It’s now just $259 too. Let’s not forget Sony has its own line of eReaders too.

Ther e is no available nook devices here in the phil. If your not from US, you are unable to register the nook. And the most important thing is to purchased a book.

  5. nate says:

nope, if your IP addrss is non-mainland US, you won’t be able to make e-book purchases with Barnes. only way is to ask a friend/relative in the US to make your purchases as they will automatically sync to your nook. Barnes has been dragging their feet on international usage…so get on their site and voice your concern….hopefully they’ll work on this problem sooner than later.

  6. xandra says:

Has B&N acted on the non-US residents nook reader regarding not being able to buy ebooks outside US? I’m planning to buy a nook kasi but if I can’t buy books here in Manila then I’d rather not.

to those who would like to buy the nook or any accessories, pm me in facebook and i can help you.

i am still on the fence about whether to get a kindle 3 or the nook. i love the look of the nook but am apprehensive on whether it will work here in the philippines. i’m trying to read some reviews to help me decide so any help would be appreciated :)

  9. tet says:

hi where can i buy nook accessories here in manila?

  10. GIAN says:

went to SM Annex Infomaxx this afternoon to inquire regarding this gadget. Currently the price is 21,500… T_T

  11. GIAN says:

I saw one at the SM ANNEX (4th or 5th floor) when I accompanied my friend to buy a phone in wellcom. We’re in a hurry we didn’t get the chance to ask for the price….

  12. Sophia says:

Is there a barnes and noble store here in the philippines?

  13. Lendsi says:

Ordered the Kindle 2 and it works fine here in the Philippines….

  14. anne says:

Just received my nook (someone bought it for me sa US) hope this will be helpful:

    1. have your friend/relative buy it for you in the US (50% cheaper than in the Philippines) AND ask them to register it for you as well while on US soil because you won’t be able to register it in the Philippines (unless you mask your IP or something) AND ask them to buy you a cover/case/sleeve as well because you will have a very very tough time scouring the metro for a cover that will fit :)

    2. mine came with a $50 B&N ebooks gift card BUT again, you need to have a US address to use it so I’m planning on asking someone in the US to use it up for me (you can ask that same person buying it for you to go all out and buy all the books you want while in the US (the plus with the 3g thing is that you won’t have to hardwire the ebooks via a PC — it can go straight from the B&N webstore to your nook — not really a big deal if you’re a fan of free ebooks :D)

    3. the 3g thing won’t work in the Philippines but if you vacation in the US, you’ll be able to use it there — and apparently you can go in a B&N store there and read ebooks for free (sana may branch sila dito lol!)

    4. it comes with wifi and a beta web browser which is good enough for accessing twitter or click the city for movie schedules sa mccafe :D

    5. i like the way it feels on your hands, very sturdy – rubber yung back – super plus

    6. the e-ink thing is FTW! easy to read, not stressing to the eyes, imagine reading a book with the whitest sheet of paper and blackest ink

    7. all in all it roughly translates to php12K – very good hardware, android OS (i here some dev folks are building apps for the nook already), very good screen – e-ink and no glare, and wifi (you just miss out on the at&t 3g and B&N extra perks but who cares if you’re in Manila lol!) top problem i’m seeing in the near future: how will i update the system since i haven’t registered it yet…oh well.

keep on reading and HTH! :D

  15. Jill says:

hahahha And what category do i fit in?? I WAS hoping we could mush up some illegaly taken PDF files on the kindle/nook :( I dont have Dollars in my pockets u know. Oh and to begin with i dont even have Pockets. Great, Living the life here.

  16. Erwin says:

Take a chill-pill Jill (whaddya know? it rhymes) Juveniles and seniles are both welcome to comment. Let’s just hope the factory in China that makes all of these eReaders sell them off as export overruns (like what they always do). lol

  17. Jill says:

wow. surrounded by adults:D Nice. Wonder what ill be like??I guess im too immature to even join this thread. Ok ill mind my own bussiness now. Frozen Yoghurt FTW!! Wooo. :D

  18. Erwin says:

Better look for another supplier. Infomaxx have exorbitant prices. They have, at the least, a 100%++ mark up (I bought a GPS unit for 8K++… saw the same unit at their stores priced at 18K++… you do the math) just look at all the items they’re selling. I’m not here to bad-mouth infomaxx but if you aren’t excreting money or growing them off a tree, better take your hard-earned money elsewhere. Best bet would still be asking a friend or relative going to the states to buy you one.

  19. Jill says:

What?! Hmpph. guess ill just have to use my phone all the time -.- Tnx anyway. Maybe after a decade National Bookstore will decide to make theyre own Reader. hahah It’ll be called ‘Jibbert’ or sumthing stupid like that. Just kidding guys. chill

  20. Richard says:

    Good news on the Nook.

The name of the store that sells it in Market Market is Info Maxx. Saw them selling the Nook for 27k which is too much though. I bought one from the US for only around 12k and was able to get a promo rate for the accessories. It is a pretty device against the Kindle and I would rather have it against the Ipad because it has an anti-glare feature. It is lightweight and weighs around the weight of an actual book or even less.

    Now the Bad the news.

I had to return the unit immediately because I found out that you wont be able to buy an ebook from B&N if you are outside the United States territories. It has something to do with copyright issues which I found weird since there is an international treaty on the duty free access of books and the Philippines is signatory to it. I guess Barnes and Noble’s researchers dont know this. I learned this tiny detail when I spoke with the customer service personnel over the phone while I was upgrading the OS. I already accepted that I wont be able to use the 3G feature but B&N blocks the IP addresses located outside the US even if you are on wifi. Its no different from your Iphone or Touch, or any other device. In fact the other devices are better because you can buy from Amazon.

The Kindle on the other hand is usable in PH and apparently the 3G connection for you to use to download the books from Amazon is free of charge.

The Nook is a better device though than the Kindle. B&N has ebooks that you usually buy for 8 bucks that you can only 2 bucks from B&N.

  21. Jill says:

What??!! 27,500??! That’s pretty pricey. I was just wondering if we could upload PDF files into the nook considering we dont have dollars all the time, and though illegaly purchased in the internet
Dont rant on me kay?? Im 14 and jobless what else could i do besides download free ebooks all day.

  22. ira says:

but if you guys find anywhere else to buy the nook for a cheaper price, leave a reply please!!

  23. ira says:

oh, and it’s on the wing of market market with the bungee jumping and wall climbing on the top floor. haha. sorry my info’s pretty ambiguous. but the store was right next to the escalator i rode, and the ereaders were the first thing i saw cuz they were on display and there was a crowd gawking at them. :))

  24. ira says:

i saw a nook, an ipad and two sizes of kindles in market market. i forgot the name of the store but the nook was selling at 27,500 –> which is unfair cuz that’s twice its real selling price abroad which is roughly 12,000 only. anyway, the store is on the third floor if i remember correctly. :)

  25. tanya says:

i would seriously love to buy one as in right now but have found nowhere i can buy the nook except online. am leaning towards nook though…

  26. Erwin says:

    Rant:

Its useless to comment on gadgets like these if all you’re going to do is just, well, comment on them and not give the most important information: WHERE IS IT AVAILABLE LOCALLY?

I’ve counted 7 questions pertaining to where it is available locally, but this thread rambles on and on about “check this out, this one’s better”. Well my lolo is better than your lolo. So quit with the electronic peeing contest and tell us where to buy these!

    End Rant:

P.S. Had a bad day at the office, sorry for taking it out on you guys.

  27. David says:

Where I can buy e-reader inthe Philippines? (Sony, nook-ereader and kindle) Please let me know coz I need one or two for my nieces.

    Thanks

  28. mitch says:

Hi.. just wondering if nook works perfectly in the philippines? does anyone know? i know kindle works just fine.

  29. ella says:

hello, i would like to ak if you know a store that sells any brand of e reader here in manila? thanks

  30. edge says:

san ako pwede bumili n nook p[lease pakisabu naman sa akin

  31. vern says:

@yuga the fact that there are thousands of others who have not held the device who call it the kindle killer does not excuse you from journalistic responsibility. The title like many others you choose is more link-bait than anything else.

    • Abe Olandres says:

@vern – dude, don’t take the title too seriously. Just call it figure of speech.

  32. arnold says:

@pusang tulog – enTourage eDGe is pretty powerful but too pricey at $400+.

better yet…wait till the Asus Eee Reader comes out…:-)

  33. Rocky Garcia says:

Awesome! This will be the hardest competitor of Kindle.

  34. vern says:

How can you name this article a Kindle killer without having held one?

  35. israel says:

where the heck are ereaders in the Philippines.

  36. dongkidoodles says:

i guess in a year or two, screen can shift from greyscale (book reading) to color (magazine & web surfing)easily. Capacity will reach 120gb ssd and priced similarly or lower. That’s when i’ll get an e-book reader.

  37. Jhay says:

When would this be available locally?

More ereaders, the faster the prices would go down. :D

  38. Calvin says:

Until the price goes down to the $100 or less, I don’t think it will be popular here in the country. mas pipilitin pa ring bumili sa booksale. hehehe. or i’m just going to stick with the ipod touch.

  39. Pusang Kulog says:

Wait till you guys see the enTourage Edge…

  40. Pusang Kulog says:

At last! Something like this has caught yugatech’s attention! Although this is quite better than the Kindle, wait till you guys see enTourage Edge…

  41. Reel Advice says:

Wow, this comes with Android? This is already better than Kindle with that alone.

But I am much more curious with the 3G SIM. I am just dreaming that its next iteration will have phone functionality! :)

  42. noelperlas says:

WiFi – YUM, Android – YUM!
Will they make it available in the Philippines just like Kindle is?
