Frequently Asked Questions

Is Meralco building nuclear power plants?

Yes, Meralco is planning to build micro modular nuclear power plants with a goal to start an operational plant in an island province by 2028. The company is conducting a six-month feasibility study in collaboration with US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp (USNC) to develop these reactors, which have a capacity of up to 300 megawatts per unit.

Why did Meralco have to issue refunds to customers?

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) ordered Meralco to refund over PHP 21.8 billion in distribution-related charges to its customers for the period covering July 2015 to June 2022. This was due to over-recoveries identified by the regulator. The refund was implemented at an average rate of P0.4790 per kWh.

What causes rotational brownouts in Meralco areas?

Rotational brownouts or Manual Load Dropping (MLD) occur when the Luzon Grid is placed under a 'red alert' status by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), indicating insufficient power supply. Meralco implements these controlled interruptions to balance the grid when generation is deficient. Priority institutions like hospitals and airports are less likely to be affected.
