Duo PNF Pen and Free: Instant Touchscreen

The Duo PNF Pen and Free kit can actually make your laptop LCD screen (or any display monitor for that matter) into a touch screen almost instantly.

The device is a sensor and a pen you place on top of your laptop screen or desktop monitor and then attached to the system via USB. The device couples as an infra-red sensor and ultrasonic sensor to locate the coordinates of the pen which then sends the data to the system.

Here’s a video demo of how the PNF kit works:

The kit is on sale at Cool Toyz for a promo price of Php7,000. A bit on the expensive side but I think there would be a number of people (designers, artists, etc.) who might want to have one of these kit to replace their Wacom. I wonder though if the kit will be able to manage dual or extended screen displays.

  1. Very interesting. It would be great if you can do a product review!

  2. Very interesting. Any chance that you’ll be doing a review?

  3. Looks like a copy of Johnny Chung Lee’s wii hacks/projects.

  4. Will that NOT scratch your very precious screen?! I was thinking if there is a paper-thin film which you can attach so as to protect yout LCD.

    7K is still pricey.

  5. Techie is right… this is a rip off of Johnny Lee’s Projects using Wii mote.

  6. Price is too steep for me. I’m waiting till touchscreen becomes standard on all computers.

  7. saw a feature about this pen and free thing in a korean channel months back!
    i think it’s pretty neat!
imo, php7k is not that bad if you really need it for your work or hobby..=)

  8. I can’t see it in cooltoyz’s website.
Anyway, I like the concept. Impatiently waiting for a cdr-king knockoff. :D

  9. интересная статья..

  10. I would prefer upgrading my netbook monitor into a touchscreen than using a USB powered ultra-sonic/ infra-red pen that drains battery.

  14. Достаточно интересная и познавательная тема

  15. Thanks guys for the link..

Actually I’d tested that kind of device.
    Here are my test experienced:
    1. Clip it on(Rx)laptop (Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7).
    2. It comes with a software and calibration utility(Windows 7 have built-in driver for touch screen, this one works but not that accurate since its for Vista supports only). Only 32-bit MS OS
    3. The pen comes with sensor to make the cursor more accurate. I let the team animation to use it for their project and they found it great, but instead of laptop, I used LCD 21″ wide. I made a dole to fit the Rx to the LCD frame. Receiver (Rx) must be correctly center and aligned with the screen (don’t block the sensor).
    4. I had also used a piece of paper and clip the receiver. This one is good when taking down notes, sketching and etc using ballpoint pen (bundled for ink writing). Ink writing is to record your actual sketches into soft copy (for doctor’s).

The advantage of this is you can clip it in your Laptop screen, LCD monitor or on cardboard. The DuoPen is accurately high resolution even if it does not stated in the specs. This is good for presentation (educational purposes). No need to buy touchscreen LCD or laptop, just add a few bucks then upgrade your laptop/LCD into amazing touchscreen.
