Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has announced that it has started mass production of “WhiteMagic” – a 5-inch Full HD high luminance TFT LCD module.
According to JDI, WhiteMagic adds a White (W) subpixel into a Red/Green/Blue (RGB) LCD panel which improves picture brightness. This new Full-HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) LCD panel can produce surface luminance of up to 840cd/m2, better than what the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 can produce which is at 660cd/m2.
In addition to the improved brightness, WhiteMagic can also reduce power consumption by scanning “the input picture image data through a unique algorithm which derives the best signal processing to drive the LCD panel and backlight.”
In summary, the WhiteMagic panels can greatly improve outdoor visibility while at the same time, reduce power consumption of future 5-inch Full HD devices.
JDI WhiteMagic specs:
Screen size (diagonal): 5.0inch (12.6cm)
Number of pixels: 1,080 (x RGB) x 1,920 (Full-HD)
Resolution density: 446ppi
Display mode: Transmissive
Dimensions: 63.24mm (W) x 117.18mm (H)
Surface luminance: 840cd/m2 (typ.)
NTSC ratio: 70?
Contrast ratio: 1000 : 1 (typ.)
JDI will exhibit the WhiteMagic displays at the FPD International 2013 in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan on October 23 to 25, 2013.

First!

When I went to Japan in 2005 for training in Matsushita, I recall this tech was already available back then; the inventor is a Japanese. We were told, production was only limited to specialized JDM’s. I am not sure if my memory serves me right. Forgive me, I could not elaborate more, because I could not simply recall the technical details. But I’ll dig my library files to be able to share with you later.

You should have not made this post. Come back once your research is done.

[I only wonder bakit hindi pa nag mass production si Samsung. Nag take ng easier route by making a deal nalang kay Sharp.]
Hardware at software integration experiments para mapaganda pa ang standard red green blue colors – to create an image. Trademark is White Magic. In case you are wondering bakit ibang company gagawa kaysa naka imbento sa Japan – yan po ay gawa ng economy of scale na tawagin – mas profitable order kasa specialized firm kaysa mag tool-up ka to produce your own.
In case you would ask, ang Retina ng Apple ay plain gimmick. Chemically treated lang ang glass coating at increased contrast ratio – like all the rest pati China at India generic. Hindi siya prang sa Sharp or Sony.
Tech rumours says ang xperia z2 ay IGZO ang gagamitin with the x-reality engine. White Magic in its refined form -and all the sony tech.

jake says:
i think meron na nito ang xperia before
jakolero says:
Yes sir White Magic is a trademark of sony.
wew says:
di kaya magmukhang washed out ung display nito?
red says:

After buying a Galaxy S III, I’m never going back to LCD ever again. AMOLED for the win. OLED is the future.
