PhotoFast has been making accessories for iOS devices, among others, for many years and the latest one they’ve got is this iType C drive. This is basically a USB-type flash drive that supports iOS devices.
One of the many drawbacks of using iOS devices, like an iPhone, is the inability to be able to expand the internal storage. This is because Apple has made it a policy not to include an expandable storage (normally a microSD card slot) to the iPhone.
This means a consumer will have to invest in higher models when they buy a new iPhone or iPad (16GB to 256GB). The issue with that is additional cost — around $200 to upgrade a 32GB iPhone to a 256GB model.
PhotoFast has been solving this problem with their iType flash drives. We’ve been using their iFlashDrive as far back as 2012.
This year, they released the iType C drive. This is basically the same concept only that it’s now compatible with other USB-Type C devices on top of the regular USB Type-A devices.
USB Type-C devices like smartphones and laptops are becoming a standard so the iType C drive addresses this concern.
The device basically has one end of the dongle with a standard Lightning port that you plug on an iOS device like an iPhone. There’s a companion app you can download from the iTunes App Store which provides access to the external storage device using a proprietary File Manager.
On the other end of the storage device is a USB Type-C plug that you can connect to a smartphone or a laptop (the new Macbook Pro for example) so you can transfer files between devices. The storage device also comes with an extension that supports a microUSB and a standard USB Type-A plug so you can plug it to almost any other devices that have those ports.
The PhotoFast iType C is light and portable, easy to use and very convenient if you’re heavily invested in an iOS ecosystem. That also means you really have to invest on it as the 64GB model sells for Php4,490 locally {see listing on Lazada here}.
