Western Union adds Documentary Stamp Tax

This was just informed to me by the Western Union branch I frequent — WU will start charging for Documentary Stamp Tax (DST) from July 1, 2008 and onwards.

DST rates aren’t that high though. The announcement says it’s Php0.30 for every Php200 or just about 0.15% of total amount remitted.

Here’s a sample computation they gave:

Amount Remitted: Php2,000
DST Deduction: Php3.00

Amount Remitted: Php10,000
DST Deduction: Php15.00

Amount Remitted: Php50,000
DST Deduction: Php75.00

Amount Remitted: Php100,000
DST Deduction: Php150.00

And yes, this includes all AdSense Publishers who opted to get remittance via Western Union (DST Section 18 of the 1997 Tax Code, Republic Act 9243).

Walang on hold etc etc.

  2. TheLoveGuru says:

    • Abe Olandres says:

Yung sa Western Union, puede in Peso or Dollars mo kunin. Just bring a valid ID or kung me Passport ka, maganda. Pag sa Bank account kase na in Dollars, mabagal at matagal ma clear yung money.

  7. blankpixels says:

Aw. I was counting on WU for my farrrrrrrrrr (hehe) future earnings with AdSense.

Just imagine how many OFWs and Pinoy online money-makers would be paying that 0.15%.

  8. rich says:

Too much…Can you imagine how much money they will get evryday for millions of ppl using WU.Ive been using this service since 2004.Now im sure i will find other money transfer services. This money transfer start panahon pa ng giyera.
The reason why ppl choose WU its bcoz its the more affordable and fastest money transfer so far.Marami na ring naglalabasang new services ngayon.pag nag click yan im sure tax invasion nanaman yan.

Malaking pera to.

  11. TheKetchupGang says:

    ..another way of corruption..tsk.tsk.

  12. Elai says:

  13. eros says:

Hmm, I still have a long way to go to get my Adsense earnings. I’m just trying if it works.

  14. chipmunk says:

WU nice! there’s a new branch infront of Greenbelt 5 Zara, FYI =)

  18. Rex says:

Isn’t the tax better off shouldered by the sender instead of the receiver?

  19. shannon says:

  20. Animohosting.com says:

oh my. i thing western union should reduce it

  21. Jan Alvin says:

@Erin, ahh ganun pala yun, sorry misunderstanding. :-)

  22. jun asis says:

Yup. Just encashed my adsense last July 1. From $106 (after several months hahaha), it went down to $105.84. Not really a big dent.

  23. rasta80 says:

Is this another way of making money for the government which will just be corrupted by our government officials?

  24. Erin says:

@alvin: re: “the deduction is higher than the remittance” – how did you come by that? the DST is about 0.15% of total amount so that can’t be true unless you count the fees as deductions and the remitted amount is less than the fees imposed.

    ciao!

  25. Abe Olandres says:

Apparently, it’s only now that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has sent out the circular. It means, whatever is collected here will be remitted to the government.

  26. Philippine Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering Forum says:

bakit ngayon lang sila nag-charge? at bakit naisipan kaya nila mag-charge.

  27. Jan Alvin says:

That really hurts, the deduction is higher than the remittance!!

I think that is n abuse, I think the demand for their remittance service is not that high. Why would they increase that much??
