New House Bill wants road and traffic safety to be taught in schools

A new House Bill has been recently filed that aims to include road and traffic safety as part of the curriculum of elementary and secondary schools.

House Bill 4160 is authored by Reps. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City) and Maximo Rodriguez, Jr. (Party List, Abante Mindanao). Its objective is “to educate the students on the importance of road courtesy, discipline and obedience to traffic laws.”

2013-santa-fe

Under the bill, the subject “Road courtesy, discipline and traffic safety education” should be taught in schools starting from Grade 1 up to 4th year high school. It will include lectures about traffic signs and what they mean, rights and obligations of pedestrians, rights and obligations of drivers, rights and obligations of vehicle owners and public utility vehicles, Philippine laws on driving, fines and penalties, and a subject on Local Traffic Codes, among others.

“There seems to be a growing number of traffic accidents in the country which can be attributed mainly to the sheer disregard of traffic laws or ignorance,” said Rodriguez.

Though having a subject about road courtesy, discipline and obedience to traffic laws is helpful to future drivers. Eventually they would still learn to be “defensive drivers” so that they won’t get bullied by the jeeps, buses, taxis, fx’s and also tricycles because of the many uneducated and undisciplined drivers already plying the roads of Manila.

I think the best solution here would be being very strict to these public transportations, like only loading and unloading passengers in designated stations, like the ones in Makati or Hong Kong, a little sacrifice of walking a bit (good for the health as well) would result in a much more organized Manila City roads.

Finally. Traffic rules and safety applies to pedestrians, commuters, etc. too you know, not just drivers. It’s one of the most basic rules that a responsible citizen should know, and abide to.

I think this is a good idea. We are not training to be drivers per se, but courtesy on the road is a must and if it can be taught in schools it shall lessen traffic violations in the near future. A dad could be reminded by his schooling kid if hes violating or being plain ignorant, mahihiya naman kaya good daddy nyan di ba.????

This proves that this country is slowly becoming like the U.S. (sounds scary if you ask me)… At least those students would learn how to drive a vehicle at the age or 13, Manual or Automatic vehicles for that matter!

Trains? Di lang naman Jeep new drivers ang kelangan matuto ng traffic safety.. Even private vehicle drivers nowadays doesn’t know or care about traffic safety.
