Here’s something different. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, or UNICEF, has launched a campaign called the Tap Project that enables mobile users help provide clean water to those in need by not using their smartphones or tablets for a short period of time.
According to UNICEF, there are 768 million people around the world who do not have safe, clean water to drink. In addition, there are 2.5 billion people who don’t have access to a proper toilet. The Tap Project aims to help address this problem by issuing a challenge to mobile users around the world.
The challenge is pretty simple. All you need to do is visit uniceftapproject.org on your mobile device then see how long you can go without your smartphone. The site will utilize your smartphone’s sensors to monitor if you’re using it or not. For every ten minutes you don’t touch your phone, UNICEF Tap Project donors and sponsors can fund one day of clean water for a child in need.
One caution though, we tried it for an hour and we noticed that it can take up some battery life so we suggest using it when you have enough power to spare.

Geez, what a do nothing feel good solution that only the U.N could come up with.
enks says:
website down?
stoic says:
indeed, what a commendable effort in alleviating the lack of potable water worldwide? but..
really now? so basically, one goes to the website, then let the site use your phone’s sensor to see if you were not able to use your phone for x minutes/hours, and if so, the site donor’s will donate water?
why not Unicef go direct and solicit help from the top honcho likes of Buffet, Gates or Slim with billions to spare?
commendable effort, yes.. effective much? let the ploy decide..

say that again to yourself. “magdonate na lang kung magdodonate, ang dami pang arte.”
Critic says:
This is not only being able to help others but doing yourself a favor as well. Perhaps the donors wanted the people to atleast spend some time away from their mobile devices and get a life. I’m sure many people will be productive enough when they are not infront of their mobile phones.
