Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro

So Apple sent in a 13″ Macbook Pro with the new Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) pre-installed so I can check out how the new OS upgrade performs.

I was actually hoping I’d get the unit with just Leopard (10.5) in it and have Snow Leopard on a disk that I can personally install. That way, I’d be able to test out Leopard first before upgrading to Snow Leopard and see the difference (or feel any improvements).

Some say Snow Leopard is more like a service pack than a total OS update. This could be due to the fact that there’s not much cosmetic differences between 10.5 and 10.6.

Earlier reviews by the big boys like David Pogue (NYT) got a lot of flak from the likes of John C. Dvorack and Leo Laporte (that got my curiosity/interest with Snow Leopard) but that’s another story about disclosures and conflicts of interests among journalists/bloggers .

Anyway, I’m hoping I could get something up after trying this rig. I’m sure those of you who own a Mac have already made the update so I’ll just focus on the stuff that us non-Mac users might appreciate. :D

  1. typo – I’m sure those of you who OWN a Mac have already

  2. thanks for spotting that! :D

  3. upgraded to snow leopard recently. still the same boring OS.

  4. Mac is cool but it is very expensive so I opted to buy a High-end Gateway Laptop with Powerful Specs. By the way, I like the way you took the pictures and the quality of it.

  5. Since you’re on the latest Apple hardware, use it in 64-bit mode to get the most out of it. When you see the apple logo at boot, hold down “6” and “4” to boot into 64-bit mode.

    Enjoy!

  6. Just to avoid confusion – Snow Leopard is a 64-bit OS however by default it runs a 32-bit kernel upon boot. To boot into a 64-bit kernel, use the procedure stated above.

  7. room mate ko bumili din ng ganyan. astig yung snow leopard. btw i’m using leopard right now and makikita naman talaga ang difference ng dalawa.

  8. MAC OS is the most successful LINUX version (both derived from UNIX)…

there goes the free OS movement… buy este bye!

  9. If im not mistaken, OSX has a BSD lineage. If so “derived from Unix” but not a “LINUX version”.

The Free OS Software philosophy is about freedom and not price. Everything has an associated cost.

    ciao!

  10. Why don’t Apple just sell OSX to everyone and not just Mac (hardware) users? This would certainly give Windows some serious competition.

  11. @Jhay
they won’t be able to certify all the possible combinations of hardware and software – even on Apple-owned and controlled platforms, there are issues with NVidia vs ATI, etc.

and of course, Jobs wants to control everything!

  12. @Jhay

I’m not so sure you know what you’re talking about. The OSX is specifically made for MAC Hardware. You’re simply promoting your once-again stupid ideas.

    • Jhays idea is not actually stupid, telling someone that their idea is stupid doesn’t actually make you intelligent but makes you the stupid one. its like people saying Einstein on his day. on now people look up on him.

Why apple does make macosx available to clone? because they can’t do that. they lost on software war. and steve jobs already accepted it. microsoft with it huge partnership with hardware vendor give them the edge. but jobs is just plain a**holy attitude make partnership with apple too hard and not profitable.

  13. i agree with jhay. can’t OSX be modified for other devices, huh neobux?

  14. @August

    Troll.

  15. @ Neobux – look who’s trolling. think out of the box loser! :D

  16. @August

An smiley can’t hide your stupidity. If MAC had the sane reason to do that, wouldn’t they have done so in the past decade. Seriously, do you even think? Your maggot intuition makes me giggle. For starters, look up on the definition of an OS kernel, dumbass :D

    • When apple promote the “think different”. they should really apply it to their company. right now they still thinking the same. same monopoly tactics. why promote something that they can’t do. yeah call me stupid. but that is the question that goes on my mind. and Im a mac user.

  17. and oh just to let you know, apple isn’t the only company who can create hardwares just for OSX if only apple share their patented technology (well it is patented for selfish reasons). ever heard of 3rd party developers? maggot intuition? what the heck are you talking about?! stop using the “s” word, you are only embarrassing yourself my friend.

“AN” smiley? i rest my case

  18. @Neobux

allow me to slap your face with this …

    HAHAHAHAHAHA and giggles

  19. to each his own :) comments should be for real mac users only. Havent tried snow but based on reviews across the web, it doesnt cut much on the former OS. Seems to be a service pack, im happy with leopard for now

@august, i started doing hackintosh years ago when Apple started supporting intel procs. Thing is this hackintosh project subliminally pushes you to buy an apple product hehe. I just did, their is no substitute for a real thing. But hey im still running final cut on a gigabyte mobo under 10.5.6 and smokes out the quad core at my office. If others cant afford a mac, then hackintosh is really the way to go for the “experience”

cheers amigos, keep it cool :)

  20. Apple is mainly a hardware company, not a software company.

That’s their business model. OS X is a means to sell their computers.

  21. wow… a Mac.. big mac?!!! :)

yeah… apple is basically a hardware company… they just use software as a leverage to sell more hardware.. that’s why their sofware only runs on their hardware!

it’s like their business plan is..
    “No hardware, no software”

  22. I’ve finally decided to get a real Mac with Leopard. Even if Hackintosh sounds cool.

  23. Do you think I should buy apple shares now, or is it too late?

  24. i have the 15″ macbook pro and it’s the best. mac’s os is definitely superb.
