Loving the new Flock 0.9 browser

Flock LogoSince, the initial release of Flock, I’ve been slowly liking this Firefox-based browser. It’s the second most commonly used browser in my laptop, next to Firefox. My only gripe before was the utter lack of 3rd-party plug-ins or extensions, a feature I find essential for better browsing experience.

Just recently, the new version release of Flock (version 0.9) has much improved and I’m liking it even better.

Flock

Not only does the media integration works better, the built-in RSS feed reader rocks. But best of all, the extensions/plugins I’m running on Firefox works just fine (although the browser would remind that there could be incompatibilities). There’s also a built-in spell-checker.

The default search engine in the search toolbar used to be Yahoo but now you can actually set that in the preferences and select any of these – Yahoo, Google, Ask, Wikipedia, Netvibes Universe, eBay, Wink, and Technorati. You can also enable the Live Search where a drop down list of search results shows up while you type the keywords. The drop down list feature, called Search Elsewhere, is pretty useful when comparing search results between browsers. I hope they’d also include Dictionary.com in that list soon.

    Hi Evan,

I think most users will be familiar with that popping orange bar sooner or later. How about adding a check-box in the Preferences to turn it off once in for all.

That way, those who already know how to use it will have the option to disable that bar. Sometimes, the simplest solution is the best.

    Hey Yuga,

Thanks for the feedback. We’re always mulling over this issue…how do we make something like that pop/speak for itself without being annoying? Any suggestions as to what would have worked for you?

I’ve been using flock and firefox and some time IE, for comparison of the browser and some testing on my sites. But firefox, yield most of my expectation, thus the percentage of using firefox over flock is around 60% firefox, 30% flock and 10% IE and others.

It is also nice to see that one flock team visited your blog, you really rock!

    Hi Evan,

Thanks for the tip. Now I understand why that orange bar kept on popping. A great product like Flock should speak for itself. Keep on improving!

  5. Evan Hamilton says:

    Hey yuga,

Thanks for the kind words, glad to hear that you’re enjoying Flock! We’re totally stoked to have 0.9 out to the public, and we’re already plugging away on very significant innovations and additions that will be released soon.

By the way, you can add Dictionary.com to your Flock search…just go to dictionary.com, click the glowing search icon in the address bar, and then click the “Dictionary.com” dropdown that appears. Viola, dictionary.com should be in your search (I actually have it plugged in right now and use it all the time!).

    Flock on!

I used Flock for a long time. It’s only recently that I’ve switched to Firefox because of the lack of plugins (as you’ve pointed out). But I still love it better than firefox! :D

that’s good news. i actually use two browsers, Flock and Firefox. but lately, i find myself using Flock most of the time because it loads faster than FireFox. as for the rest of the browsers (IE6/7, Safari) i use it only for testing.
