Mozilla not enough, Google develops own Chrome browser

Google has been supporting the development of Mozilla browser for years now but it seems the effort is not enough to gain major market share. So, it has decided to create its own browser — Google Chrome.

In an announcement in the official Google blog:

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn’t the browser that matters. It’s only a tool to run the important stuff — the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today’s complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated “sandbox”, we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.

Google will still continue efforts to help Mozilla but with the Google Chrome Browser already taking first priority, I’m not sure if the partnership will last. Of course, Google will reallocate marketing budget to its own product.

If this is an attempt to cut against Microsoft’s dominance with Internet Explorer, it might work. However, there’s a bigger possibility that Chrome will just attract Firefox users rather than IE n00bs.

  1. So Google has repositioned itself in the ‘browser wars’ huh?

Perhaps they timed this with the release of IE 8? ;)

  2. Hmm.. it’ll take quite some marketing effort from Google to make this break into at least Firefox and Opera’s market share.

on the browser, I love how they’re doing the tabs lol.

  3. edi maganda yan. may bagong browser naman. hehe

  4. I hope the Chrome browser is web developer friendly…

  5. the chrome comic book. hehehe!

  6. Yeah, this might not affect IE’s market share at all but may attract Mozilla/Opera users instead.

Most people use IE not because they think it’s better but because they think the little blue “e” icon is actually the internet.

  7. hmm ano kaya effect sa mga designers? may sarili rin ba kaya silang standards when it comes to CSS? hayy.

  8. anyone notice while firefox is fast is uses up all your memory… imo this is a good move for google, to design something whihc was just made for browsing, if they can make it faster and better than firefox then go for it :)

  9. Cool, can’t wait to try it!

By the way you can read this comic strip by google to explain the features of the new Chrome browser in an earthly language:

Try reading it, kinda a page turner for me lol.

  10. IE 8 hides and deletes your surfing tracks rendering Yahoo and Google’s multi-million dollar behavioral ad system useless. Chrome however will allow Google to know more about your surfing habits and keep records it.

  11. @snyggast

Google’s Chrome browser also has that feature.

Chrome has a privacy mode where URL/browser history is never stored on your computer. Moreover, it automatically deletes cookies the moment you close the tab.

Besides, google ads are not cookie-driven. So, saying that IE8 renders ad behavioral systems useless is a bit inaccurate.

I have IE8 beta 2 on my laptop and I still see targeted google ads on sites that I visit.

  12. I love my mozilla browser. What are the advantages of the new chrome browser?

  13. ngaks..

im using chrome now, kanina pa ako pabalik2 sa gears site ng google para maka download ha..and it loads unbelievably fast. beta palang to so marami pang kulang.pero i actually like the clean look of it, i mean.it’s neat, simple and fast. Flash loads really fast.. pero, may mga jScripts and dhtmls na d pa gumagana, tinry ko sa javasciptkit tsaka sa dynamicdrive, may mga d pa nag wowork, pero u can import all ur IE tsaka FF nga bookmarks ha.. heheh lol

and yup, ung mga passive surfers think that the stupid blue E sign’s actually the internet and nothing but. heheh

  14. I’ll definitely try it. But until now, for me nothing compares with Mozilla even though IE7 has a tab browsing already. We’ll see how far the chrome browser will go.

  15. im using it right now and it was f&*(ing fast

  16. I have tied using Google Chrome and it find it hard to use and it requires a bit more faster internet connection to work effectively.

but all in all the interface seems to be very promising compared to other web browsers in the market today.

  17. Google recently extended their financial support for Firefox.

Secondly, Chrome is tagged as “Mozilla/Firefox” under the hood, but other analytics services already adjusted accordingly. Some reports say Chrome got 1.5% to 3.0% already.

  18. Google Chrome is really fast!
Now I can sort 200,000 records inside of Browser (Chrome) just in 1 sec. (Faster than Microsoft Excel):

  19. Google Chrome is to set the net on fire. Well having used Mozilla for couple of years now I am looking forward for the change.

  20. fyi the individuals behind google chrome came from the developers of firefox, google pirated the developers from firefox, you’ll see some firefox features incorporated within chrome. hehehehe… lol

  21. @Iceman: Chrome is taken from the sources of Safari (Webkit) and Firefox (guess what — ‘chrome’)

The UI is most likely Firefox but the rendering engine is from Safari.

Also, the caching design is from Firefox.

  22. true. as a firefox user, I am attracted to Google Chrome.

  23. Although everything about this browser is great i abandoned the use of it just for the simple reason of it CRASHING too OFTEN.Back to Avant which I used to use.
