You know a product is hot when other manufacturers start to make competing versions of it. The Asus Eee PC is one of them, so it’s not a wonder why ECS and MSI are touting their own cheap ultra-portables.
First up is the ECS G10IL — this 11-inch (diagonal) baby from ECS is strategically priced at around $500 so it’s more like taking cue from the 9-inch Eee PC crowd.
Comes with HSDPA (nice!), and the usual – 3 USB ports, VGA, LAN, modem, webcam but no optical drive. Other specs are not yet clear and unsure if it will come with the usual HDD or smaller SSD.
The other one is the MSI Wind PC. It will come in 8 and 10 inch form factor and buyers will have the option for a regular HDD or the more pricey SSD. It will run the new Intel Atom CPU with a default 1 GB of RAM and a 6-cell battery that could last 6 to 7 hours. It’s a little pricey though as starting cost is around $500 and higher.
Both models are looking to compete with the recently announced 9-inch Asus PC Eee and will have either Linux or Windows OSes.
