In a recent presentation by RedFox executives where they previewed 3 ebook readers to the members of CyberPress, they also revealed they are coming out with a tablet this September.
The tablet will be named RedFox WizPad, a play on the popular Apple iPad tablet and is expected to be announced/released this September.
The WizPad will be powered by an Intel Atom processor (could be one of the new low-powered Atom Z6xx series). Best of all, customers will have a choice of operating system for the tablet — Android, Meego, Windows 7 and and Google’s Chrome OS.
The tablet will be larger than the iPad and as slim (14mm vs. 13.4mm of the iPad) with support for multi-touch (1366×768 pixel resolution).
The device will have WiFi and 3G versions as well as optional GPS. Unlike the iPad, the WizPad will have USB ports, SD card slot, webcam and mini-HDMI port.
No pricing was indicated but RedFox says it will be priced competitively. Will know more when they finally announce this in September.
Note: I delayed writing this entry hoping I could get a copy of the Powerpoint slides they showed during the presentation. I’m still waiting for it. Photo courtesy of Techie.com.ph.
Not really multiple OS it seems. Bought one and the android OS stuck with airplane mode and no one here in Malaysia can solve this issue for me, for web surfing or anything need wi-fi connections, I can only use Window 7.. One nore things is the leather case for it. Can’t even find an appropriate one searching around the whole IT complex in Malaysia.. Other features are not so bad…
I’ve tried one briefly at their outlet store in SM marikina cyberzone, it seems responsive. It is a netbook turned into a tablet with full windows 7 functionality, meaning I can install Adobe photoshop in this thing and connect a bluetooth KB and Mouse. I can be productive while being portable. Good for frequent travelers.
“sana ma read nang taga Redfox yung mga comment nang user about there wizpad so they can modify it according to customers concern”
o baka naman:
…THEIR wizpad
amfufufu!
wizpad…49k huh…
nasa
21,799
34,199
at
37,799 yung may 3G
ang mga price nyan, nakita ko sa SM North.
Ewan ko lang sa ibang panig ng Pilipinas hehe!
@canizares_henry: I got to talk with Andy Te last week and pointed out your concerns about the P49k pricing. He explained that that’s the pricing for the highest-end model, which has Windows 7 Home Premium and a whole lot of other advanced features. I’m not sure I’m at liberty to relay the expected price range but it’ll start much lower than the near-50K.
Oh, and he gave it to me to play with for a few minutes. I also found touch iffy with the Windows 7 widgets — the Close, Minimize, and Maximize widgets in particular. From the start menu, I also kept hitting the wrong programs. And I don’t think that’s specific to the WizPad — I have to dig around but I think other touch-enabled tablets face the same “challenge” with Win 7.
…im one of the testers of this product..this one rocks!…i even saw how to install a windows 7 OS on this one!..its a complete mobile pc!..you can install microsoft office 2007 and 2010 and other software..iPad is introuble!..go buy this one guys! its worth it!
Acer pa din ako. :P
@lawrence
multiboot sir baka tama ka para lang tumaas ung price nila, for pc users puwede namang tayo nalang ang magawa nang multi boot tablet right?
redfox should stick with ubuntu and it will lower prices around 5k for the OS
@ canizares_henry
haha.. of course.. for a pc it would be a no brainer.. but multi-boot on an “ipad-like” (considering iOs is so propriety) device would make it look more capable(illusional) , hence manufacturers can demand higher price.
and technically mahal talga ang mga touch based pc, HP’s and Asus tablet Pcs nagrarange na ng 30K++, with more weight and a resistive screen pa un. pero sana they should make an effort to keep the price lower :)
The P40k price would be a total downer. Based from the comments, it’s totally not worth the price.
@efren
sir efs i dont thnk they made it here they import parts from china and assemble it here or totally import from china and rebrand
RedFox is a local PC company, so dapat walang Import Tax diba?
@ sir abe
sana ma read nang taga Redfox yung mga comment nang user about there wizpad so they can modify it according to customers concern
@lawrence
sir with respect to ability to boot multiple OS doesnt make the device expensive coz theoretically its simple to make a pc boot in several OS, any pc that runs intel or amd can virtually run multiple OS. marami guide sa google about it. the simplest would be dual boot with Ubuntu coz its straight forward
para sa akin double taxation na yung ginawa nila kasi aside from the importation tax naglalagay pa sila nang evat right? how about they slash there pork to compensate the losses in importation and just get the revenue from evat nalang. I think mag compensate naman as long as maraming tao ang bibili right?
When I talk to Asus representative, they told me that in order to be competitive with Acer and MSI, they slash down the warranty to 1 year instead of 2 years. Thats bad for us computer consumer. According to that guy sama na daw yung importation tax (baka kasama na rin ang tong sa customs?) hehehe opinion lang po.
dapat si president Pnoy gagawa nang batas na magexempt nang importation tax para sa mga gizmo at gadget or slash down the tax para competitive price tayo compared sa US. If mag difer lang nang around 3k sa US price its oks na oks na. When we go to malls ang mahal nga compared to US price, the high end laptops here cost more than 20k there in the US. If ganito nalang palagi hindi masyadong aangat yung ating education in IT.
@lawrence
yes sir multi touch capacitive just like in the iphone but the responsiveness is not as the same maybe due to software
wait tayo sa Asus windows 7 CE model tablet yung recently announced sa taiwan, wala pa tayong problema sa warranty and hardware durability
Will this be the PinoyPad?
Half the price of the Apple iPad? across all models
I think our fellow Pinoy Citizens will patronize this like the MyPhone branded phones
I’d like Android please. Hope this one would also be compatible with the upcoming Android version.
@canizares_henry
ung na test mo ba e prototype version sir? may multi-touch ba? good news kung maganda ung hardware, kasi my experience with the brand sa mga PC nila e hinda gano Ok..
letdown lng tlaga ung battery..
Anyway I’ll also w8 for msi’s tablet which is said to be priced competitively.. :)
@lawrence
sir it was built pretty well, hindi cheapo ang dating, matte finished saka glass screen
hehe hindi lang ma replace ung bat
better they stary on linux para hindi mahal, and extended bat life, na try ko na dual boot windows 7 at ubuntu and I found out it extends the bat life for 1 additional hour, and the responsiveness compared to windows 7 is around x3
I think it’s ability to boot multiple OS’es makes it expensive. prang fullpledge tablet pc na sya. kyang non-replaceable battery at redfox hardware sucks. kung around 15k lng sya, it will be a good buy though.
@mr bogus
tama ka sir, kawawa costumer if may nangyari sa bat, hindi user replaceable, and the lesser the capacity the faster in wears down due to its fast charge and recharge cycle
every new bat has an estimated 400-800 charge recharge cycle
I also think Redfox source out there product from China, theres no other country who will always copy product
basta if they want to be competitive dapat mababa lang ang price not 49k as what the Redfox representative are telling me
hahaha ok ahh. gaya cge gaya lang sa apple……….. atleast may competition ibang brand man yan o made in china fake gadgets…
kuna mahaba ang battery life nito ay ok lang pero:
problema talaga sa redfox ay yung after sales nila… pano yung battery o yung service after the warranty????
hahaha ok ahh. gaya cge gaya lang sa apple……….. atleast may competition ibang brand man yan o made in china fake gadgets…
I would also sudgest to Redfox that to compete with the IPAD as their representative insist its better than the apple IPAD, they should used snapdragon processor, used SSD, make the RAM to DDR3 and used alternative OS aside from windows 7 (the unit yesterday at COMPDDAP is under windows 7 with 2hrs runtime)in order to make the device run at least 6hrs. If in runs at least 6hrs and sold at 15-17k, i will buy there product.
by the way at around 40k we can get the ipad 64gb www.ebuystore.com.ph at MP3 tab
I’m not an apple fan boy but i consider the ipad as the top ebook reader/ tablet due to its colored screen and insane battery life of 10-12hrs. I will not be the judge of its success but its buyers. For the past 3 months since its lunch it sells 3million units. Its hard to believe at first but its true.
I was able to get a hold of this device and test it for 30minutes yesterday at COMDDAP at SM cebu. The weight of the device is roughly around 800gms. It has complete peripheral port, HDMI, SD card reader, USB, camera, sim card for mobile internet, and capacitive touch screen w/c is made of glass. I was able to read ebooks in chm format only, due to lack of acrobat reader on the said device. Fairly enough its a good ebook reader except for its bat life and not so perfect capacitive touch screen.I had a slight difficulty in hitting the right button on its lower left screen. I was not convinced about its price, the redfox representative told me that they will sell this device at 49k. It only has 2hrs battery, 8hrs shorter than ipad even the 16Gb ipad. This will not be a competitive price if sold at almost 50k considering very poor bat life and non user replaceable bat and the 16Gb ipad will sell at 30k. I sudgest they put linux on it either ubuntu or android and sell it for 15k-17k and make the battery user replaceable that will be the appropriate competitive price.
Hoping..
This year we will see so many ‘pads’; every manufacturer, big or small, is busy building them to not miss the boat. Many didn’t see the Kindle (for ebooks) and iphone (as smartphone) coming, so when the iPad came out the didn’t want to miss it this time. Little do they know most already did; too little too late as I see the specs. Let’s hope something nice will come.
It seems like they are thinking up these names to be the butt of a joke, iPad and WizPad, LOL. The joke to do on peoples WizPads would be to pee on their WizPad, haha.
@abeolandres I still can’t understand why these tablets have to be WiFI OR 3G. Why not just WiFi AND 3G? I’d actually like both in one.
cool. i just hope it’ll really be priced competitively.
