Globe caps SuperSurf at 800MB per day

So I looked at how Globe does their capping for unlimited mobile internet (SuperSurf) and found out that their Fair Use Policy has a somewhat similar strategy. Though this time, it’s 800MB per day.

Was wondering at first why they did it on a daily basis instead of monthly then realized that there’s no 30-day SuperSurf for prepaid (just for postpaid).

An 800MB daily cap translates to 24GB per month (30 days) so that seems reasonable. I guess their tagline “Walang Metro” only applies to the time-based not not really the bandwidth.

However, unlike Smart’s Fair Use Policy which throttles you down to a slower speed, Globe’s SuperSurf will totally disconnect you to their network when you reach the daily limit. You can go back and surf again the following day, when your 800MB quota will be refreshed.

The problem is: If it comes to internet – the Philippines unfortunately don’t have a free market. Smartbro and Globe share the market and until now they can do what they want. If the government would allow foreign companies to get in, thousands of Globe and Smartbro subscriber would swap to other providers. There would be no more forced 2 years contracts and the prices would drop dramatically.

Globe Telecoms ‘Fair Usage Policy’: Deceptive and Bad for PH
    Posted: April 6th, 2011 | Author: TXTPower | Filed under: News | 3 Comments »
Globe Telecoms, the perennial second placer in the mobile telecoms sector, is not doing any good to the Philippines and its subscribers with its deceptively-labeled Fair Usage Policy. Worse, it may be a convenient way to hide problems in network capacity, quality and reliability of telcos, which is an obvious hindrance to more widespread use of the internet and social media as an enabler for stakeholders in the country’s progress.

Globe Telecom’s data caps which allegedly target the abusive five percent of its subscribers actually cover 100 percent of all of Globe Telecom subscribers. Is that fair? No.

Telcos such as Globe Telecoms should be careful in referring to any of its subscribers as “abusers” especially in this age of the internet and social media. Those same abusers may actually be small and medium-scale businesses, home-based online entrepreneurs, OFW families keeping constant touch or netizens in the cutting-edge of surging social media in the Philippines.

We call on President Aquino to direct the National Telecommunications Commission to perform its functions as telecom regulator. It should check whether Globe Telecom has sufficient network infrastructure and bandwidth for its 26.5 million mobile subscribers and 1.1 million broadband subscribers. There is a growing suspicion that Globe Telecom imposed the data caps not so much because of user abuse, but maybe due to the network’s oversubscription and insufficient network capacity for both current and future subscribers. All telcos should be covered by this NTC appraisal and inventory.

Globe Telecom’s data cap announcement claims that five percent of its mobile internet and broadband users purportedly corner 80 percent of available bandwidth. This “figure” is no different and may be the same figure cited in late 2010 by the Philippine Chamber of Telecom Operators. Both are at the very least suspect. But something should come out because of these claims by Globe Telecom and PCTO: These so-called “studies” ought to compel the NTC to perform its own, independent checks covering usage, current network infrastructure and both ongoing and future investments to expand both reach and bandwidth capacity. NTC should penalize telcos that underdeliver and let their services to be oversubscribed or to be falsely advertised.

Before Globe Telecoms and other PCTO members point to telcos in countries as models for their data caps, we should remind them that many of those countries have fast and reliable internet in the first place. That cannot be said for telcos in the Philippines which cannot provide true 3G, 3.5G and 4G connections. Telcos led by PLDT and Globe Telecom are pulling the Philippines to the bottom of lists of countries in terms of internet speeds.

Globe Telecom argues that there’s no law or regulations stopping it from imposing data caps. That is not true. It was among the telcos which helped put out the draft NTC memorandum-circular on minimum broadband speed. Bowing to consumer protests, the NTC has already decided against the provision on data caps. We hope the NTC stands by its decision and that telcos, led by Globe Telecom would abide by it.

President Aquino should keep an eye on internet speeds and service quality because more and more Filipinos are going online for business and work, education, advocacy and causes, and other important purposes. Internet access ought to be an open, affordable and reliable enabler. The irony is that while more and more governments worldwide have realized this and are moving towards greater and universal access, telcos in the Philippines are out to curtail usage and are allowed to gouge the public with their substandard and unreliable services.

The connection is good but and I thought its a dream come true but its not…. oh well at least their web site tells that on a stipulated time it will return… I guess we just have to wait till that time comes ^_^… its kinda boring though without Internet at lease he has more time with me rather than surfing the net all day… His a bit agitated right now… and so angry cause he can`t connect to his net we are currently using sharing with my wifi connection hope mine does not disconnect too soon

  23. Oliver says:

So stupid why unli 24/7 net if you have a cap and disconnection where’s the 24/7? if you have a cap where`s the unlimited if there`s a cap of 800mb. I just bought my broadband today and reading this comments really helped a lot thanks. Bye bye broadband I just waste money for a lying company…. Its just wrong… so wrong… I`m sorry Globe… Just telling what I am feeling Hope you understand why other no all costumers are upset… please value your customers more than earning more money and posting false ads….

  24. GigaLove says:

“Unlimited”? “No Limits”? I was expecting so much from Tattoo, though it seems that it failed me. Babalik na lang ako ky Bro.

Guys meron ba gusto bumili ng Globe Tatto Stick jan, Brand new, 1 week pa lng nabibili nand2 pa resibo. benta ko Php500 n lang.

Misleading talaga Globe. Sa US pwede sila sue.. Class action lawsuit lang. Unless ibahin nila ads nila. Madaya talaga. SMART and SUN totoong walang limit. oo capped na after a certain MB is reached. pero at least di ka disconnected.

Sa Sun Broadband Wireless kasi mas tiwala ako when it comes to broadband sticks dahil matagal bago ma-reach ang quota.

Globe is better than any network. My opinion.

  33. Midnight says:

Sana nalang monthly yung capping nila like 100GB per month.

  34. anna says:

ipinaalam ba to sa mga consumers bago ipinatupad? curious lang ako.. sa area kasi namin, globe coverage sucks big time. i can hardly connect, di ako matulungan ng tech support nila tapos madalas ako babaan ng phone ng customer service pag di na nila alam isasagot. nakakdismaya kasi di naman ako yung tipo ng customer na naninigaw, gusto ko lang maayos yung problema ko. i have since switched to DSL para stable yung connection. if i want to use the laptop or my mobile, wifi hotspot na lang. pag wala, e di tiis muna ng walang connection. di naman kailangang laging online. (for me lang po yun ha)

  35. Oliver says:

I have been using Supersurf for postpaid but i think wala ata capping sa postpaid and the speed is up to 2.5Mbps…

been downloading this day up to 3.2gb of selected series and movies and going pa din ang downloading and surfing

  37. Si5 says:

its not necessarily 24hrs. here’s a tip. lets say you subscribed around lunch so you have until lunch tomorrow before your subscription ends. the 800mb limit ends at exactly 00:00am as per globe time so after that by 00:01am u have fresh 800mb again until lunch the other day. Remember to consume the 800mb cap before 00:00am so you can get the fresh 800mb cap again. all in all you get 1600mb. hope this helps.

  38. maritess says:

nice… i can use the service for 16000mb for 24 hours… I used to download anime episodes and it really bothers me that the globe limits it to 800mb, at least now, i can download up to 30 episodes in a day..strategy is the key… haha….

  39. Niceguy19_2003 says:

Unlimited means unlimited. How can you call something unlimited when you limit it at 800MB. That’s false advertising. That won’t happen in Australia and the US.

  46. maritess says:

ah,when the subscription reach 800mb at 10 pm, can I browse again on the net at 12 am since it was considered “tomorrow” or should I wait for 24 hours, like , 10pm the next day? I am really confuse about the subscription time, since I registered in different hours of the day, mostly 3am..

    • aaron says:

yes you can do that i tried that earlier if u subscribe on 10 pm u can surf on 12 am becauseit says tomorrow

  47. Robert Baitz says:

I thought the promo was labelled UNLIMITED surfing. Oh c’mon Globe people, may pinag-aralan naman kayo siguro. Hindi unli pag may limit!!..
    I’m not satisfied ..

  48. Herce says:

Sucks, is this a new policy? I’ve definitely done more than 800MB in a day before and not had a problem. Does this effect corporate accounts? I like streaming movies on the go and this will definitely kill that ability. This country used to be so much better that the rest when it came to stuff like capping, it made up for the piss poor speeds. Now its just starting to suck. :(

experienced the hard and expensive way during the first 2 weeks of using globe tattoo prepaid on my newly bought pc after the free 125 hours promo. many times ive experienced the 800mb cap even without youtube and p2p. sometimes 2 – 3 minutes surfing , nagiging 10mb na agad especially if naka 1.4-1.9mbps and dl speed. what i did i just disabled shockwave flash player and deactivated windows auto updates and antivirus updates. these 3 were the culprits of why such a huge memory usage after so short period of time. no worry for me since i have deepfreeze installed. now it is back to normal. ave 25-30mb per hour on usual surfing, facebook and ym chat. 800mb/24 hours = roughly 33mb/hour.
for now ill stick to globe tattoo. no choice since globe has a much stronger signal than smart. an earlier post was right. sometimes, the dl speed spikes up to 2.4-3mbps. in my area, the signal is hsdpa with ave dl speed 1.2-1.9mbps average. the actual dl speed ive got ranges from 140 – 195 kbps (when downloading a file).

suggestion to globe…bring it back to 1gig or higher or much more unlimited after the holidays.

also train your cs to answer queries re fair usage policy on a more natural and professional manner and not scripted. consumers are not dumb these days anymore. and not always use the ntc/fair usage policy excuse.

  65. Robin says:

    I support CAPS! lol

Seriously, better than then network congestion.

  66. binaryboy says:

    solution:
use “opera turbo” feature in opera browser. i’m sure that you’ll get lower bandwidth since opera turbo compresses all images when you browse the internet.
at least, this is a way for extending your browsing life.

  67. Aldo says:

They shouldnt call it unlimited kase sobrang liit nyan. pwede pa unlimited similar with web hosting companies na 999999mb ayan pwede yan tawagin unlimitied pero yung 800mb at 1.5G is useless lalo na ngayun.

In 2011 dadami pa ang mobile device users since lahat ng tech. papunta dun. maiiwan na ang desktop and laptops since mobile users will most likely use their mobile devices for instant research for, restaurants, friends, shopping, travel etc. less hassle kesa ilalabas mo pa ang laptop mo or notebook mo para lang mag google.

  68. poche says:

    @lolipop
the 1.5gb from smart only applies for their postpaid galaxy tab and n8 unli internet plans.
    doesnt apply for prepaid.

and besides as yuga states he only discovered it at the smart website. he didnt experienced it first hand. also who knows if its implemented now.

  69. lolipown says:

    @neo
wait, mas maganda ang smart? Mas maganda ang 1.5Gb limit per month vs 800 Mb limit per day? Really?

  70. Miguel says:

Due to the limited frequencies assigned to Globe and other telcos, you should not expect to have unlimited data downloads. Unlimited here means you can stay online indefinitely while you are subscribed to the “unlimited” service and haven’t gotten over the maximum bandwidth (sounds ironic).

Mobile telco’s aren’t designed to accomodate heavy downloads. If you are a heavy user, it’s better to have a wired connection.

  71. neil says:

just compare globe, smart and sun to a succubus that would suck the fun out from websurfing…
as for me, i am happy with my landline dsl plan.. although it is expensive and i cant connect while on the road, but its internet speed is consistent. so what if i cant connect while on the road, do i really need to watch a youtube video or update my facebook with my ipad or nokia c3 while in edsa??? wala pa akong balak magpakamatay sa kamay ng holdaper.

  72. neo says:

kakainis tlaga ung 800mb cap. ngaun di na ako makadownload ng torrents. mas maganda ung smart on this. un nga lang wla akong 3g signal dito samin. kaya bumili pa ako ng globe tatoo. pero day 1 pa lg of use prompted na ung 800 mb warning sms. tas kung kelan ka talaga na consume dun rin sya mag resume. ang tagal ko pa nag antay.

yeah right @ commenter mas maganda pa gumamit ng proxy. kaya lg mejo mabagal kumpara sa original setting.

  73. Earl Joseph says:

P200/gb.. tas good for 1month pa yun.

  74. Banglay says:

Maiba tayo ng topic sir Abe but related to internet din.. Have you heard http://www.wi-free.com? LEGAL po bang gamitin sa pinas?

  75. al says:

im under a postpaid blackberry unlimtd service i consume around 1gb perday for tehtering, not experiencing cap…i guess its a different issue for postpaid..

  76. Techietonic says:

800 MB is pretty small these days. What if whole day kang online – I’m sure you can consume more than the 800 MB cap.

  77. No Name says:

For Prepaid. You can just unregister your current terminated SuperSurf subscription then register again to get another 800MB. Its like 50pesos/800MB.

  78. No Name says:

Not happening on me on Postpaid SUPERSURF which is 1,200 on top my bill. I’m using iPhone internet tethering to my MacBook. I downloaded more than 15GB a day. Speed still up to 3Mbps and i get about 2.5Mbps.

  79. sonny says:

i was locked out twice, when i downloaded ubuntu and then when i installed programs. I used 2 sims for it. So i guess their tv commercial is not exactly true

  80. poche says:

    @mindyq
cge gumamit ka ng dsl while driving, at the school, mall etc.

  81. mindyQ says:

just get ADSL or cable internet guys

  82. tantra2gadget says:

I want to try the sun unlimited broadband next time
sana naman mas ok and d madalas mawalan ng signal bars everytime i use myglobe tatto0 usb broadband”,

  83. dan says:

This is the reason why I sold m Globe Tattoo. I’m now with Sun, which is not any better. Crawling speeds…

  84. Dan says:

    @daninjakitten

a limit to their unlimited service? the irony..

  85. Pusang Kulog says:

Oh, just a tip… It’s Youtube and other flash related websites which sucks the most from your 800 Mb limitation.

  86. Pusang Kulog says:

Technically, you can stretch the Globe Tattoo capping from 800mb to 1,600 Mb per day. That is if you’ll load at some point of the day, say at 12pm, you’ll be able to surf and download for 800 Mb before Globe temporarily stops your subscription. Then, when midnight comes, you’ll be able to start surfing and downloading again till 12pm the next day as your subscription will be terminated on that time whether you reach another 800 Mb or not for the next day.

At this point, you could load and register for another SUPERSURF50 run and basically just do the same till the next day.

I know this because I am experiencing it first hand and daily with my prepaid Globe Tattoo on my laptop.

I use to get furious about Globe capping my Prepaid Internet Connection but after reading Smart’s way of capping, I guess I have to settle with the “lesser evil.” ;-)

  87. kebs says:

Mas ok naman to kesa sa SMART at SUN. Grabe.

internet freedom means free internet access!

  89. Sanctuarian06 says:

From 2GB TO 1GB and now it came up to 800MB a day.

  90. daninjakitten says:

    @frozenpyro
Totally agree with you. I have had several run-ins with Globe about their so-called unlimited surfing, and some of my emails apparently even made it as far as middle management. The last time I was in contact with them (a few months ago) was when they disconnected my prepaid Tattoo SIM without even warning me because they said I went over their limit on the unlimited service. Of course, I threatened to sue them and to report them to the Ad Standards Council, but unfortunately never got around to it.

Well, pasok pa rin naman yata ang complaints ko sa statute of limitations ng violation nila (as far as I know; will have to check, though) and I downloaded the pages on their site, so wala silang ligtas if I decide to push through with a lawsuit or a formal complaint.

  91. Calvin says:

  92. Charo says:

@Abe, when you mention mobile internet here, are you just talking about the internet you use with your usual call & text line or does this also encompass Globe’s Tattoo Broadband / SmartBro prepaid?

From the looks of the Smart cap, mobile browsing would pertain to the likes of Smart Buddy and Smart Gold. Not to SmartBro because the expected usage here is totally different. I would assume that the cap for Globe is also just meant for the net that comes with Globe’s prepaid/postpaid call&text lines. Globe Broadband would have a totally different usage altogether.

    • Abe Olandres says:

@charo – i think for Smart, SmartBro is not under mobile internet category. For Globe, I think the cap includes both mobile internet and Tattoo since both are under SuperSurf. Globe Broadband has different cap. Around 15GB to 25GB per month.

  93. Gee says:

Sir Yuga, how come the title of your review for this is: Canon Powershot S95 Review? lol :)

    • Abe Olandres says:

@alexei – i don’t think it makes sense to download an 800MB file on your phoje. the biggest i have downloaded ia like 60MB.

    • Abe Olandres says:

Bug with WordPress App on the iPhone. Fixed it na.

  94. tantra2gadget says:

Ok ung sa globe 800mb per day,but if you want to download m0re stuff you need to wait for the 12am in the midnight to be able to browse again

  95. Alexei Rivera says:

I’d like to remind people that 800mb is hardly a lot bandwidth for one day. You can easily get that much if you’re going to download a simple game client to play online games.

  96. Jozzua says:

    Boo. Ano raw sa SUN?

  97. Jozzua says:

Boo. What’s SUN’s cap on it’s unlimited internet?

  98. Jeffrey John Imutan says:

but if you max out your cap per day ay hindi ka na maka-connect, after 24 hours pa ulit.

  99. frozenpyro says:

Again, kinda misleading. They should just say it outright. P50/day for 800mb.

  100. mary says:

I’ve been using globe tattoo/supersurf and I thought that this 800MB cap was an inconvenience, pero reading your post about Smart Sir Abe, parang mas ok pa rin ang globe!

When you’re registered to supersurf50 (that’s for 1 day) and you reach the 800mb limit, you can just “unregister” and use the internet on their normal, metered rates. Don’t know what will happen if you’re registered for more than 1 day and you reach the day’s limit.

  101. Jacen29 says:

    Much better than smart….

  102. Willy Yu says:

wala metro kasi disconnected so meter is not running,
nice slogan by Globe, di na sila nahiya!

  103. Manix says:

seems fair enough, 800mb a day is more than sufficient.
