My meeting with an executive from Smart’s Public Affairs office went well and I got the juicy details about how the service was brought about.
The discussion revolved around the new strategy to approach the growing problem and apparent inadequacies with Smart Wifi. Now that it’s re-branded as Smart Bro, a new team was also put in place to oversee the entire operation.
An explanation from an earlier email to me is posted below:
We’re currently undertaking measures to improve network facilities by deploying advanced radio base stations and terminal equipment, and installing upgraded routers. We’re also expanding the wireless broadband network’s core transmission backbone capacity up to 10 Gbps and the regional backbone capacity to 1 Gbps. International transmission capacity has also been increased significantly to further improve access to servers overseas.
On the customer care end, we are improving the customer service systems and processes that handle queries regarding the wireless broadband service. The number of call center seats dedicated to broadband customers has been increased to 370. On the business end, Smart Bro is now directly managed by a combination of PLDT and Smart executives and technical professionals.
Concurrent to these measures, we intend to expand our customer interaction and feedback mechanisms by partnering with journalists, editors, technology users groups and active bloggers who regularly encounter customer feedback (good or bad) on our Smart Bro service . As such, we would like to invite you to form part of “Smart Bro Big Bro ” core user group. We can discuss this opportunity at length at a your most convinient time.
From what was told to me, their original support personnel was just 70 and it was only now that they added 300 more (after the Meridian mass-walkout?). Oh, well.
Anyway, they will be installing Smart Bro at my place so I can have first-hand experience with the service, provide them direct feedback and suggestions for improvement. Along with the other members of the core group, we will ahve direct access to all department heads, especially their network operations manager.
I also mentioned that this move (tapping active bloggers among others to “beta test” such services) is a first in the Philippines. More on this at PTB.

hi guys,
like most of you I was made to believe that I am getting my money’s worth when i signed up with Smart Bro with a 2 year locked in period. Actually I have an ok experience with Smart Bro prepaid last year, so i am assuming i will have the same experience at least. But alas after just 1 day of surfing – i am searching the web for smart bro forums. Its very very frustrating when they advertise 2MBPS while in reality I average something like 30kbps!! which is less than dial up!
Can we report this to consumer protection organizations? Can we get out of the locked in period without paying the balance?? I would understand if most of the time its less than 2mbps but 20 or 30kbps is too much ! it’s like saying most of the dozen eggs you bought are ok only to find out all but 1 are rotten. This really frustrates me. so maybe we can all band together to make Smart improve its service.
Pls advise thanks

You guys are lucky enough to have that kind of connection. I’m reading this blog via a GPRS-enabled cellfone connection (my only way, being 3 kms. away from a cellsite) and I’m not complaining. Even DSL connection have their own
set of problems. By the way, Wi-Max is coming, hopefully next year. And surely will also have its own set of problems. Good Day.

SmartBro Sucks. at first the connection that i am having was good for the past 2 months. then last week i dont have any connection at all. i called teir tech support a couple of times but still the same problem. its already been a week now and i don’t have any connection yet. It really sucks. mabagal na nga minsan poor service pa. It took them more than a week to figure out that they need a technician to fix my canopy.
They should better improve their service and maintain customers loyalty if they want to maintain their business.
Wala parin ako internet!!!! bad trip na to… we shoudl all file a complain about sa pan loloko nila sa advertisement nila.
John Carter says:
I have had first hand experience with the total lack of customer support from Dumb Bro (ok, they prefer to be called Smart Bro).
I ended up paying for 6 months service with promises and promises to come and fix the service.
I have written the money off (and the approximate 5 hours of international phone calls to Dumb) as a bad experience and I would never use Dumb (Smart) for any service, ever.
I explained to them that they will lose my loyalty but they did not seem to care.
They are driven only by money and promises and no action.
I am sure some people have had a good experience. I would rather go without internet all together if there was no alternative… thats how serious I am when it comes to loyalty or disloyalty.
I hope nobody else gets burnt like I did.

I had my share of SmartBro’s bad connection. After the installation, everything was so smooth. I thought to myself “I made the right choice.” I spoke too soon. A little over a month after I had it installed, I experienced intermittent connection. I called their tech support several times and all they could say is that they’re fixing the home base. Such a crap! I even experienced 2 days of no service. I decided to call, complain and ask for an adjustment on my bill for the days I haven’t had service. The next day, a contractor was calling me to set an appointment in fixing the canopy. Everything’s smooth and sailing from thereon.

regarding bandwitdth, so far i average about 270 kb/s sometimes i reach as high as 390 kb/s, is this good enough for wi-fi 999/mo or wut? problem is, intermittent ang connection. wut good is a high bandwidth reading if your connection is in and out? Hey SmartBro! please be truthful about your advertisement and try to keep up with your promises. Listen to your conscience. Have a heart for those people who trusts in your services. what we’re paying you is hard earned money. if all subscriptions are beyond your facility’s capacity, then stop marketting for the moment until you upgrade..
stuwee says:
the hard truth is, no matter what ISP we choose to subscribe, there will always be problems, inevitable problems. before i applied for a smart bro connection, i first observed how the smartbro connection of my neighbor went so far, so far so good naman for atleast 7 months. just last month i decided na magpakabit na rin. took me 3 days lang online na ako, bilis ng internet, bumilib ako, tapos the other day lang i went to post my first blog at yugatech praising smart bro’s “amazing” service, out of the blue naisipan kong mag ping sa DNS Server checking kung stable ba ang connection ko, pagtingin ko bigla nalang intermittent na ang connection ko putol-putol na! naku hindot naka pag post pa naman nako ng maganda about smartbro nyeta!!! sabi ko na nga ba naisahan ako!!!

Smartbro? Just paid 3 months salary on a service that sucks! Bandwidth promised not given. Downtime is prevalent. No rebates given to customers for the downtime experienced. Watch out for the interest rate if you don’t pay on time. On thing I hate about smartbro service is when they cut/disconnect your internet 2loy pa rin ang bayad mo + interest! Talo pa interest rate ng banko. I just wish the government/dti will investigate pldt and smart for services that are not given as promised. Monopoly is the goal of smart/pldt aka “the devil”. If the devil succeeds, God help us. The devil will own us 4ever.

The actual service wasn’t all that bad when I had it. It wasn’t slow. I have a bone to pick with their customer service though. Their cs agents keep dropping the calls. kAnGkEr says:
In fairness to smart, if you can’t contact their customer care hotline *1888, just go to the nearest wireless center and someone from their ( I think ) last resort troubleshooting team will call you up within 24 to 48 hours. That time, they are more specific, they can check your antenna parameters and they are the ones who are responsible in deploying field support. They are nice since they are not from the outsourced call center. They all really came from Smart. Just cooperate and they will be able to resolve your problem. Just a tip.
Gato says:
Yo, Yuga!
In case you happen to read this, since you have contact with a Smart executive, could you please ask him why they adverstise their Smart Bro service as “kahit sa-an” even though in reality it is not available anywhere in the Philippines? Smart should pay attention to Globe’s Visibility ad – at least Globe is honest enough to state “ALMOST anywhere” for its HSDPA service.
I’m staying in a town called San Joaquin, and whenever I e-mail Smart’s customer service reps to ask why Smart Bro hasn’t been deployed in our town (the bloody liars did say “KAHIT SA-AN”), there is no response. Seems their new CSRs are too stupid to handle my queries. Or are they too busy doing nothing? I once called, and after ten attempts finally got through to one of them, who said that my query was supposed to be referred to another deparment – the dude sounded sleepy.
Ari says:
Smart bro can not access all internet website. I suspect because of unfair marketing. Certain Netblock address range owned by competing companies like PLDT DSL are blocked. Dis means, di mo ma access some local websites hosted by other big providers. Why will you subscribe to a company that controls what you surf ? I want to surf at a webpage hosted through a competitor’s IP address, but I can’t because smart bro has blocked the competition punishing in effect it’s subscribers. Kaya yun, I moved to PLDT just because smart bro used unfair biz practices.
mimz says:
Hope NTC will look into these problem. can DTI help too…. we subscribers are helpless, we keep on calling their *1888/ or their toll free PLDt no. and before you get an answer from the other line you are already half sleep. it takes tooooo long for their tech. support to answer calls then you have to wait for toooooooo long again for their technician to come over. Are we given deductions for the number of days or weeks without connection?

My dear Co-Bloggers,
So musta na Kayo lahat?, “long time no write†nako dito eh, ehe since awa ng Dios eh naayos ng NTC ang problema ko sa SMART Microwave internet na yan!
Guys, I hope you will really heed my advice na sulatan ang NTC (****@****.***) at sabihin ang lahat ng details nyo, be as honest and detailed as possible ha kasi isesend nila ung letter nyo mismo sa SMART eh at titignan kung totoo.
Basta ba isuli nyo ng kumpleto ung antenna or equipments nyo eh.
Happy New Year to all :)
as always,
I’m your friend —- Fabian Santos (soldiers hills, alabang. muntinlupa)

Smart Bro is a freaking WHITE COLLAR SCAM! I do not recommend you to use this ISP. Since the start, I have been experiencing unstable and intermittent connection and almost frequently the connection totally flatlines for days and even weeks! Also, when you call the hotline (*1888) the efficiency of their system is not very good. The stupid call center agents they have just subjects you to their stupid and useless trouble shooting when in fact there is no problem with the computer you are using. The support hotline would promise that you would receive a feedback within 24 hours but from what I have experienced I did not even receive any feedback from them for a week. Maybe someone ought to define what feedback means and also to give them clocks for them to know if its already 24 hours. All you can do is to wait. So while waiting with no connection at all you still pay for the days which you have no connection. Further, after 24 hours with no feedback you have to follow-up the complaint and then the support people will again tell you to wait for another 24 hours for the “higher technical group” (which i dont think really exists) to contact you for the feedback.
Oh and btw, this happens to me even when the base station is just literally across the street from my apartment! I cant imagine the other houses which are further from the base station.

Also, their agents have no manners at all.

Sasabihin sa inyo test ulit yung connection for the last time after ng sangkatutak na tawag nyo sa tech nila and pagpunta ng contractor nila.

Urgent Complaint/Request re SmartBro/SmartWifi
National Telecommunications Commission
BIR Road, East Triangle, Diliman, Quezon City
Metro Manila, Philippines
Dear Sirs/Mesdames:
As a co-convenor of TXTPower, a consumer advocacy group formed in 2001, to safeguard and assert consumer rights and welfare vis-a-vis the telecommunications companies, we wish to inform the Commission of mounting complaints from subscribers of SmartBro, formerly known as
SmartWifi, the wireless broadband service of Smart Communications.
Since the start of commercial operations of SmartWifi and even after its subsequent repackaging as SmartBro, this service has generally been perceived by its customers as substandard, unreliable and untruthful in its marketing pitches.
Since April this year, when Smart Communications relaunched the service as SmartBro, problems of intermittent or dead connection, lack of automatic refunds for such occurrences, inadequate number and lack of knowhow of the Smart customer service personnel assigned to the service, and the refusal of Smart business center to accept complaints and service queries (except to accept service applications) have continued to rile SmartWifi/SmartBro subscribers.
A certain Mark Baul, who calls himself “a SmartWifi/SmartBro victim†has emailed the Commission as late as yesterday, as per a copy forwarded to us. His problem is the same as those of many others, as the Commission will know by visiting online forums where subscribers pour their anger and frustration over the service:
http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210173&page=22
Some have even set up a website dedicated to chronicling the travails of being a SmartWifi/SmartBro victim: http://www.smartwifi.org.ph/
Due to the bad and unreliable service, many SmartWifi/SmartBro subscribers have naturally entertained suggestions of shifting to other broadband internet providers. However, they are prevented from doing so by contracts binding them to SmartWifi/SmartBro for one year.
Needless to say, these subscribers demand government action to protect their consumer rights and welfare. On their behalf, we in TXTPower ask the Commission to:
1.Order Smart Communications to immediately respond to all complaints regarding SmartWifi/SmartBro including that from Mr. Baul;
2.Conduct its own investigation and provide all fair and legal remedies to aggrieved subscribers including rebates, refunds and the rescinding of subscription contracts;
3.During the pendency of (1) and (2), to order Smart Communications to stop accepting new subscriptions to SmartWifi/SmartBro; and
4.Investigate similar complaints of subscribers of SkyDSL, BayantelDSL, PLDT myDSL, Globelines Broadband and other broadband internet services.
We would gladly extend all possible assistance to the Commission for the thorough investigation of this issue and towards the satisfaction of consumer rights and welfare of aggrieved subscribers.
Looking forward to the Commission’s positive response.
Respectfully yours,
Tonyo Cruz
Co-Convenor
TXTPower

Machtung says:
Using http://www.pldtplay.com as a baseline for bandwidth tests is not very smart.
Those servers are located locally and if your ISP has a peering arrangement with PLDT access to those servers will definitely be much quicker.
Try using international bandwith checking sites instead. In fact, in my comparison of different ISP services, sometimes the cheaper and “slower” plans are able to download faster leading me to believe that it’s not so much the subscription plan you have as much as it is the collective pipe out of the country.

Bex Rabo says:
I’ve been experiencing a very slow connection since August 25. A couple of Smart wibro/wifi field technicians were deployed last Sept. 11. and performed some reconfiguration in my connection. I was told that they changed the color code. A bandwidth test was performed through http://www.pldtplay.com/ displaying results registering 236+++kbps connection.
My fault is I did not browse the internet while they are still around to see how the connection is actually performing. I just stared on the bandwidth test results and felt satisfied with the reading. When I started browsing, I have to click on “Reload” several times to be able to gain access to websites successfully ( e.g. yahoo mail, gmail, craigslist, mybdo.com.ph…); plus the access is very slow.
I checked my connection through http://www.pldtplay.com/ and it registered 210++ kbps. I tried browsing again but I have to click on “Reload” several times still to gain access. I tested my connection through testmy.net and my connection speed is nowhere above 99kbps. I tried testing via globequest (crude test) and it’s also registering a low connection having 89kbps the highest. I observed my connection with hopes for improvement but I’m still in the same status of very slow connection.
I’m wondering why pldtplay.com displays way above what other bandwidth meters are registering??? Feeling ko tuloy http://www.pldtplay.com displays bogus bandwidth readings.

Jag says:
I had Smartbro installed July 1st, 2006.
SmartBro didn’t inform me when I applied for service that, unlike the usual broadband service ISP’s, they will not be providing PUBLIC IP addresses. I found out right after the installers left, that I couldn’t play my favorite games which use direct IP connection because my PC’s IP address is in the PRIVATE domain range (i.e. 192.168.xx.xx). The service uses NAT (Network Address Translation) technology to hide the PC from the internet. Why are taking this responsibility away from the customers? If I want to expose my PC to the internet so I can access it remotely, I should be allowed to take that risk.
Internet access service (even DIAL-UP) allows access both FROM/TO one’s PC…. If they are not going to allow direct IP connection to my PC, I would be unable to play most of my favorite games . This is totally unacceptable, and I believe it constitutes non-performance of contract service agreement.
Question: Do I have a legitimate right to cancel my subscription (without early-termination fee) and expect to be reimbursed the fees I have paid?

kakatawa talaga kayo.
tska dun sa nagsasabi hindi daw WiFi ang service, ang WiFi connection mo is not within ur premises but between your antenna and the tower. bale fixed wireless architecture na WiFi ang protocol.

Yun nga kinabukasan nakabitan na ako, when i first used the internet it runs 112 kbps which im A little bit dissapointed but in the long run it geos up to 390 kbps…

@jun! smart wifi is a wired connection not a wifi that you can access anywhere on your house. It is called wifi kasi instead of using copper wires they use a microwave signal to transmit between the antenna that they will install on your roof and their base station. If you want a cheaper but reliable connection try getting bayantel its wired DSL but you don’t have to have a Bayantel Line and their in partner with sky cable. Cost around 900 pesos a month for 256 KBps
jepoy says:
wow freeee…… *drools*
markku says:
Smart Fix? I like that. Hehehe. At least it sounds like a commitment to fix the mess they got themselves (and paying customers) into.
jun says:
Since you have their ear Abe, and u suggested some alternate pricing schemes, maybe u can whisper my thoughts to them:
i have been contemplating on getting wi fi but the cost for me right now is an issue. i use it only for about 2 hours a day max (since I’m in the office during the day). If it comes down to 500/month, with a two year lock-in period (with options to upgrade), i’ll probably (and many will, too) grab it. I would even go to the extreme of suggesting lowering bandwidth to 128 kps (if that is possible). Just to take a step off the dial-up world. Or is there a way to have it metered? many people, and students too, may benefit from this scheme.
audienceone says:
Smart Bro… harnessing the free promotion by bloggers. :D And site owners.
Smart Fix should be a new name since they’re going to make it “better” and it has a fix/lock-in period. Anyway, hopefully they’ll hold to its speed promise once they have technical people and the better infrastructure up…
Abe Olandres says:
They will be providing the connection for free for 1 year. The core group will also have direct contact with the network engineers so we might get better than usual support. We will also be logging all downtimes so that we get some sort of metrics how often it goes down — %age uptime of sorts.
I did mention the lock-in period complaints and suggested they do a some package changes — like Php998 if subscribed for 1 year, Php1,298 if subscribed for only 6 months and Php1,598 if subscribed for only 3 months. They explained that the 1-year lockin period was to compensate for the cost of the canopy.
About the outsourced support, they also admit that they used to have the support outsourced but they have now officially been doing the support internally recently along with the re-branding.
vance says:
yah i agree with yellowcard/slacker about that having accessible forum.
By the way first impression is always good thus they might install it on sced but thats just the beginning after a few weeks to a month once you have a serious problem and needs to be fix, they will make your sched mix up cause they don’t have their own contractors so they can actually give you a estimate time and they can’t also follow it up since they can’t contact them when their on a job.
SlackeR says:
This will be a good move.. Since you they will give you a Smart Bro Connection then you will have first hand experience on:
1. how long they take to have you connected
2. how professional their third party contractors are
from there you can start giving your feedback.
I agree with vance though I think they should also seek users from Tipidpc.com and http://smartbro.r8.org. From there they will have first hand comments, opinions, suggestions.
Or better yet if they don’t like that maybe they can create their own Forum site which can be accessible also via LAN/WAN so that means people who encounter connection problem can still post and view any resolutions given by Smart
Just my two centavos worth of words to say =)
vance says:
oh good luck with your connection hopefully they arrive on schedule, second if you do experience problems don’t expect that you will recieve straight answer from their tech kasi hangang troubleshooting lang sila and you have to wait 24 hours or more for the higher tech to actually call you. Sana ako rin tawagan nila and i’ll be happy to interview them and ask them all the question that will kill them starting from their commercials to their services.
and if ever na mabilis ang connection mo, it doesn’t mean na maganda ang internet nila.
I hope they also ask those people on tipidpc.com and smartbro.r8.org forums na nakakaexperience ng slow connection na around 17KBps to 50 Kbps and those people falls under 100 – 200 Kbps.
Oh well! Sana nga magimprove sila and hopefully soon malapit na matapos ang lock in ko eh.
Peace!
noemi says:
they better improve services. We just experienced a 2 day non working service. great for you to try it out. Lucky you get additional internet connection. When Smart Wifi works, it’s really fast though.
