Anton Sheker emails and points to a blatant copyright violation by a major news daily (guess which one). Read more about his story here “Major Daily Violates Photographer’s Copyright and Intellectual Property“.

My advise — send them a bill. Best way to teach violators a lesson is by punching a hole in their pockets.
Next question is — how much are the standard rates for each photo when used in print?
We have setup www.copyright.ph for those people that need to get their story out and need protection from copyright violators that infringe on our basic rights..
Help us build the site by adding your stories to the list so we can educate and get our stories out and hopefully put a stop to all these copyright infringment.

Thanks for your input on the copyright issue!
Feist,
I answered your post on my blog.. here it is again..
Feist,
Travel and Tourism is different from the Picture Perfect Section… they operate independently.. my feature has nothing to do with my complaint …
it was during the interview when i raised my copyright concerns.. and i was told at that time that the travel and tourism section was reorganizing…
just one question…
how come even after he complained, he still came out in manila bulletin’s picture perfect as their featured photograher??
Well, I thought you wanted a public apology. Class action is the answer.
Since they didn’t even bother to ask for permission, don’t go for the standard rate.
Instead, go to a stock photo site and get the rate for downloading a similarly sized image. Find the lowest rate you can find if you’re feeling generous – that will probably be a dollar or so.
Once you have that rate, multiply it by the claimed circulation of the broadsheet. That’s what you bill them.
That’s the added fee for not asking for permission.
Oh, you can also check out this PopPhoto Flash article on defending your copyright.
Yeah go sue them I know what newspaper is that hahaha
I am planning to make my blog to photoblog on May 16, 2006 after my 34 weeks of preparations watch out for that!!!
how much? Inquirer gives up to 400 per photo.
correction: I think the recipe for bulalo was from Connie Veneracion.
When I saw what paper did this, I was not surprised. They only sell due to their classfied ads, no more no less, many thanks to being government puppies.
Ayay! This is major.
Tsk, tsk. In fairness, it’s not MB alone who’s been caught flatfooted with this. It’s time media outfits assign an officer to check facts and copyright issues. IT’S TIME ALSO THAT PRs and PUBLICISTS STOP SENDING PRESS RELEASES TO NEWSPAPERS THAT WERE TAKEN FROM BLOGS!!! I highly suspected this with Marketmanila’s plagiarized recipe for bulalo. On the other hand, it is easy for responsible editors and their staff to verify titles, keywords and pictures by Googling them. I was a regular of MB for five years and I don’t know this Max Ballesteros .. I am 101% sure he’s not on the regular roster of reporters.
hmmm interesting
Try billing them and If they disagree.. I think there will be a need for a blogger brigade..
Legal suits are expensive. But try billing. A leading newspaper said they would pay me 400 to 600 pesos for my amateur photo. haha. So I am not sure what their rates are for pros.
delay or no delay there has been a copyright infringement.. a violation of my intellectual property rights…
Yeah, he should send them a bill so that they’ll think twice before they use someone else’s photos next time.
Btw, that newspaper is Manila Bulletin right?
when you delay you give them power, I mean. But compensate by escalating. Class action will be more effective but individual suits more lucrative.
I am aghast that you did not complain immediately. When you delay give them power you know.
I’m surprised at MB. Ajay works there right? Why is she even part of this publication when it obviously disregards the intellectual property rights of people especially bloggers? Shame.
sounds like a good time to get together and pool all of our complaints…
connie also wrote on my blog about someone manila bulletin also getting her recipes..
we can all course or channel our complaints to a single venue so we can all be heard..
abe? what you think?
Oh? Will sending them a bill be effective? Cause I should probably be sending bills as well to a magazine, two television stations, and a newspaper.
I hate it when people don’t respond. I have experienced this countless of times specially when I use the Contact Us page on websites. From banks to telcos to other major businesses. Better get a face to face meeting.
Hi Abe!
Thanks for the support.
ill have to find out who is in charge.. then bill them accordingly..
tsk. kasuhan nayang Mb nayan.
hehe no need to guess. the email on the newspaper is a giveaway. that’s some serious copyright violation, especially when the plate number on the kalesa was erased.
