Google buys Jaiku

Google JaikuThere goes the exit strategy — getting bought. Micro-blogging (activity stream and presence sharing service) service Jaiku has just announced the acquisition by Google.

There are three common ways to make money in this Web 2.0 industry — sell subscriptions, advertising, and then getting bought. So, for services that has a lot of competition, no sound ad platform, and cannot sell subscription is grow big enough to be noticed and get bought.

In the micro-blogging arena, you have Twittr, Jaiku and Pownce. Although the early crowd favorite is obviously Twittr, Jaiku has now grabbed the limelight by being crowned Google-owned.

Jaiku is a fairly new player in the field:

Jaiku is an activity stream and presence sharing service that works from the Web and mobile phones. Jaiku, Ltd. was founded in February, 2006 by Jyri Engeström and Petteri Koponen from Finland. The service was released on the Web in July 2006. Jaiku is based in Helsinki.

Yes, some companies and site are born to be bought. Usually, in this competitive space, the winner emerges once a huge entity like Google buys them. What will happen to Twitter and Pownce remains to be seen.

  1. hey yuga! do you know of any filipino-owned website/company bought by google? i am just wonderin’.

is that a feasible target for a filipino publisher? being bought? i guess all you have to sell is the idea really, considering jaiku here is just a start-up.

    thanks.

  2. Hmmm, so after Blogger, Google has bought a micro-blogging service. I wonder how a nano-blogging service would look? Hehehe. :-)

  3. Google bought a blogging platform, then a micro-blogging platform. What’s next? A blog called Yugatech? :)

  4. @Kuya Eugene: how about picoblogging?

I hope Jaiku’d support SMS access in the Philippines. Google has been buying lots of web apps, great thing for developers!

  5. While there have been 0 companies bought by Google (or other big Webco’s) … Jaiku is something that Pinoys could have easily built.

Our problem is more of a business one – getting funding for your product.

Some thoughts in my blog: Product and Technology Innovation.

  6. The main purpose when setting up a startup or creating a new and unique application should be out of passion or curiosity, not because you want to be bought by a bigger company.

  7. I agree with Jeffrey. Think of the users first, possible acquisition second.

  8. pinoys can now send thru sms their jaiku lifestream.

visit http://phjaiku.com the instructions are posted there.

  9. Windows only: Duplicate file cleanup utility DoubleKiller scans folders for identical files so you can delete or move them off your PC’s hard drive …
