Summary of advantages:

OnePlus 8

  • Larger display
  • More storage on the 256GB variant
  • Higher main and ultra-wide camera resolution
  • Higher front camera resolution
  • Better GPS tracking
  • Larger battery with faster charging

Samsung Galaxy S20

  • Faster refresh rate (when using 1080p) or higher resolution (locked at 60Hz)
  • Faster RAM
  • MicroSD support up to 1TB
  • Higher telephoto camera resolution
  • IP68 dust and water resistance

Display

Starting with the display, the OnePlus 8 offers its users a more immersive experience thanks to its larger display. However, the S20 can be set at either a higher resolution or a faster refresh rate. Both devices also support HDR10+.

Performance

Both the OnePlus 8 and Samsung Galaxy S20 will be able to handle any tasks its users throw at it, thanks to its top of the line chipset from Qualcomm and Exynos. Do note that the Philippine release of the S20 only comes with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of storage, hence the OnePlus 8 can be bought with better storage variants. It does, however, lack microSD card support, and comes with LPDDR4X RAM. We can expect the S20 to perform better on memory-intensive tasks such as the use of AI.

Cameras

While both devices have triple-rear cameras, their setups are different. The OnePlus 8 comes with a 48MP primary accompanied by a 16MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S20 comes with a 12MP main accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide and 64MP telephoto lens. On paper, the OnePlus 8 should be able to produce better shots using the main and ultra-wide cameras thanks to its larger resolution, while the Galaxy S20 can zoom in and take better photos from afar. The front camera on the OnePlus 8 also has a higher resolution at 16MP, compared to the S20’s 10MP.

That being said, though, a higher camera resolution does not necessarily mean it can take better photos. The software that processes images plays just a huge role in creating stunning photos.

Connectivity & Other Features

The OnePlus 8 takes the win in the connectivity department mainly due to its dual-band GPS, and 5G connectivity. The Galaxy S20 comes with a lot of features you’d expect from a flagship device. It has IP68 water and dust resistance, Knox Mobile Security, better USB connectivity, and a more secure ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

Battery & OS

Out of the box, the OnePlus 8 and Samsung Galaxy S20 run on Android 10 with their respective skins laid on top. The OnePlus 8, however, comes with a larger battery, with 4,300mAh compared to the S20’s 4,000mAh, and faster charging as well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support wireless charging like the Galaxy S20.

Price

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is priced at PHP 49,990USD 852INR 72,216EUR 811CNY 6,204 in the Philippines, while the OnePlus 8 isn’t available locally yet. We can, however, expect retailers such as Digital Walker to carry the device soon. For now, here is the MSRP of the OnePlus 8’s storage variants:

  • 8GB + 128GB – USD 699PHP 41,021INR 59,240EUR 666CNY 5,088
  • 12GB + 256GB – USD 799PHP 46,890INR 67,715EUR 761CNY 5,815

Choosing between the OnePlus 8 and Galaxy S20 isn’t as straight forward as its bigger brother, as they can trade blows with each other. Both devices have amazing displays, great performance, and capable cameras. If you’re looking to get 5G capable device with better battery life, at a (historically) lower price, then the OnePlus 8 seems to be the better choice. If, however, a more compact device, security features, water resistance, and wireless charging capabilities are more important for you, then the Galaxy S20 would be the better choice.

Which phone would rather have? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Samsung is leading if we compare its snapdragon version of s20 with Oneplus 8. I will say Oneplus has degraded the camera if we compare it with last year Oneplus 7t and even the pricing is also very high and it is beyond the pocket reach of normal people.
