Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G vs Z Flip: What’s changed?

Samsung has just launched its latest foldable smartphones, including the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip3 5G— the successor of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. You might also be wondering, “Where is the Z Flip2?” Launched last year, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is considered the second version of the Galaxy Z Flip series.

But, unfortunately, it didn’t arrive in the Philippines, so we are left with the non-5G Galaxy Z Flip. Jumping from Z Flip to Z Flip3 5G, the newest Flip smartphone now packs a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, a 120Hz Adaptive refresh rate, 5G connectivity, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. So what else has changed? Let’s see.

Display

The Galaxy Z Flip3 5G and the Galaxy Z Flip boast a similar design with two screens: the main screen and the cover display. Both main displays are the same at 6.7-inch. There’s a difference, though, which is the panel used, as the new Z Flip3 5G has Dynamic AMOLED 2X, which is Super AMOLED but with HDR10+ support.

It also boasts a smoother 120Hz refresh rate. With a higher refresh rate, scrolling through social media, long documents, or news feeds is less strenuous on the eyes because of the extra perceived fluidity.

Talking about their cover displays, the Galaxy Z Flip sports a 1.1-inch while the Z Flip3 5G now comes larger at 1.9-inch. It enables you to see visuals here, other than just the notifications or the time.

Further, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G is expected to be more durable than its predecessor, with a Gorilla Glass Victus, Armor Aluminum frame, and IPX8 water resistance.

Processor

The Galaxy Z Flip is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chip, while the Z Flip3 5G comes with the newer and more power-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G SoC.

In AnTuTu 8 , the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 performs 49% better compared to the Snapdragon 855+. In addition, the Snapdragon 888 outperforms the 855+ with their benchmark scores of 704,554 and 471,412, respectively.

RAM & Storage

Both smartphones come with 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy Z Flip has 256GB of storage, while the Z Flip 3 5G comes in two options: 128GB and 256GB. Meanwhile, both smartphones have the same advanced UFS 3.1.

Cameras

Their cameras are also almost identical. For the rear cameras, both have dual shooters of 12MP resolution and the same configuration. However, the lenses on the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G are geared with Gorilla Glass DX coating for extra scratch resistance. Upfront, both also have a 10MP selfie camera.

Connectivity and Features

For connectivity, we still get Nano-SIM with e-SIM, SatNavs, NFC, and USB-C. Biometric features are also retained.

However, the new Galaxy Z Flip3 comes with more advanced Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6. With Bluetooth 5.2, larger amounts of information can finally be transmitted over lower bandwidth and lower power. Besides, WiFi 6 (WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax) brings faster speeds than previous technologies in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

And of course, you also finally get 5G connectivity with the new Galaxy Z Flip3.

In terms of audio, the Galaxy Z Flip has mono speakers, while the Galaxy Z Flip3 comes with stereo speakers. In addition, both models come with Dolby Atmos.

Battery

Nothing changes in the battery department as both models are equipped with a 3,300mAh. Plus, the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G also keeps the same 15W fast charging.

Price

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is priced at PHP 52,990 for the 128GB model and PHP 56,990 for the 256GB. That’s over PHP 20K cheaper than the PHP 79,990 Galaxy Z Flip (256GB) when it launched last year.

Summary of improvements of the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G:
• Dynamic AMOLED 2X display
• 120Hz refresh rate
• Corning Gorilla Glass Victus
• Larger cover screen (1.9-inch)
• Gorilla Glass DX coating on the dual-rear cameras
• Newer and more powerful CPU (Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G)

Is it worth the upgrade?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G has a long list of improvements over the Galaxy Z Flip. It is now packed with more pretty solid specs with an enhanced display, heightened durability, a more powerful processor, 5G connectivity, and other upgraded features. Plus, this latest Galaxy Flip smartphone also arrives more affordable, so that’s also a plus that might entice you to upgrade.
