GE Money Bank ATM crashes

For the past week, all ATM machines of GE Money Bank went offline because of a system-wide crash. The bank has been frantically fixing the problem ever since.

The problem started when the bank scheduled a system update which resulted into a crash.

The problem is that, according to a source, all ATM card PINs have been disabled. Was at one of the branches a couple of days ago and saw people coming in to have their new ATM PINs released to them.

GE Money Bank released this notice to the public:

ATM services have been restored, GE Money Bank ATM cardholders may claim their new ATM PINs at their branch of account starting Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 for Metro Manila branches, and Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008 for provincial branches. ATM PINs for payroll accounts may be claimed at their respective HR departments by Nov. 5, 2008. The old PINs are no longer valid. However, online services are still unavailable.

GE Money has close to 30 branches nationwide.

Just this morning I was looking for a near ATM along San Miguel Avenue in Ortigas, I saw this GE Money Bank, I ask the guard if the ATM is available, he took a peak inside and said yes. I then had a withdraw of Php 1000.00 and then while on the process it went offline and said transaction cancelled and no money was dispensed. I want to the next ATM which sa a Union Bank and had a balance inquiry, to my surpise it’s only 500 left from my remaining 1,500. I went back to GE Money Bank and said that the 1000 peso I withdraw earlier was debited while their machine went offline. They gaved me a form and asked me to fill it up, after that they said they will report it to megalink and it will take 2 weeks before they can bring back my money. 2 weeks??? The real problem is, alam pala nilang may maintenance sila pero hindi nila ininform yung guard at hindi naglagay ng offline sign! And just after my complaint, that was just the time they informed the guard not to let anyone use the machine regardless if it’s online or offline. Where do you get these dim witted bank employees?

This is a very lame bank to begin with and since it is a savings, sounds like they are weakening in the market or on the verge of collaps. I’m NOT a fan of the dismal institution.

Ouch. That’s a very bad situation. They should reconsider their backup plans. That will hurt their reputation there.
