In the years that typhoons have hit Metro Manila, none have dealt much damage to electronics at home. That’s until Typhoon Frank hit Manila this week-end. It’s all Frank’s fault – the metrowide blackout busted my DSL modem.
When the power went back on, everything seemed normal except for the SpeedStream 5100 ADSL modem that PLDT provided with my line. The damn thing just won’t turn on again. Nothing, nil zilch. Must have been fried or something.
Already reported to PLDT Customer Service about it and they promised to replace the modem with a newer model. Hopefully, they’d deliver it soon — like tomorrow.
If not, I’m looking into getting my own backup DSL modem. Anybody know where I could get one for cheap?
For the meantime, I could be spending some Php300+ a day on Smart 3G.

@ralph
Why not dareglobal? That’s actually the modem PLDT gave me when I subscribed to myDSL 2 years ago. O___O
ChrisMo says:
First to check usually during this kind of situation is the power supply. Why don’t you invest in those lightning arrested type extension power cables, their quite affordable and not only arrest lightnings, it’s mainly for surge currents and voltage spikes, a fraction of the cost of an AVR which may or may not have the arrester function…
Just a suggestion for all techies out there…
ralph says:
i hope they will not replace your modem with dareglobal db 108

nice to hear that your back..

Thanks for the tips everyone.
PLDT Tech went here in the afternoon to fix the problem. The power adapter got busted. I’m up and running now.

Sorry to hear this news… the unexpected always has a way of surprising us…
noemi says:
can’t you ask PLDT to replace it? Just say it conked out?
noemi says:
Maybe the power surge destroyed it. Lauren’s smart bro modem oozed clear liquid a few weeks ago. Ugh it even burned the adaptor. So now the new modem supplied by Smart Bro is now attached to an AVR.
Something might have went wrong when there was a brownout then power came back to her modem.
Our PLDT modem is okay so far . It’s a Zyxel.

I’m glad I shut our home network down for the duration of Frank’s yelping and howling yesterday afternoon. This is precisely the sort of thing I wanted to avoid (or HDD crashes/data loss)
If you’re ok with pre-owned gear, I think there are still lots of DSL modem/routers available on tipidpc.com. You might even get lucky and find a brand-new one being offered for sale.

Did you try using a different power adaptor? Wonder if you could go grab a modem from one of those quick install kits at the malls?
