It’s been a long flight to Japan and I haven’t had a decent sleep since last night when we flew here via Hong Kong. Thanks to our host, Epson SEA, we’ll be here in Tokyo for the entire week to tour attend their Micro-Piezo Press Tour with several other tech journalists in the region.
Expect the week will mostly be about Epson, their micro-piezo technology, a little photography and of course some cool gadgets along the way. It’s my first time in Japan so I’m pretty excited to see all those geeky stuff I only read on the web.
This is also an opportunity for me to test out my new blogging kit — the Macbook Air and the Canon Powershot S95. The experience will definitely help me finish the review for both of them. So far, it’s been good although I ran into a problem with the LAN port in my hotel room so I had to rush to an Apple store to get that USB-to-LAN adaptor.
Since I missed several other trips due to the visa application process on this one, I’ve also decided to extend my stay for a couple more days to go around, visit a high school friend and scour the streets of Akihabara for some gadget-shopping. Will definitely share some of my adventures here.
If you have tips or suggestions for me, hit the comment section. :)

yes the 5% rebate is automatic in almost all big gadget stores like yodobashi, biccamera, yamada denki, sofmap etc. all you need to do is show your passport.
Sa dept store like takashimaya. I have to pay the 5% sales tax then go to customer service counter to get your rebate.

Make sure to apply for a point card in Yodobashi or Biccamera.
You get points when you buy gadgets from that store. Points system there are better than sa Pinas na 200pesos = 1 point = 1 peso

Make sure that when you buy stuff ask for duty free privilege. No 5% sales tax.

sugoi. i miss tokyo. agree with the meiji shrine, “koyo” (autumn colors) may definitely be abound. pass by harajuku, for the cosplayers just before getting in the park. get lost in yodobashi in shinjuku. go to odaiba, tokyo bay area. ginza area for high class shopping. roppongi for the night life. if shopping for non tech stuff, like gold and jewelry, go to okachimachi, just after akihabara going to ueno. for music instrument and stuff, it’s ochanomizu, just before akihabara, from shinjuku. and of course, shibuya, which you might have been to if you passed by the apple store. since it’s autumn, and if you’re willing to go a little farther out for some “koyo”, the usuals would be nikko, hakone, or the nearest, mt. takao.
Joey says:
Is it your first time in Japan? If it is make sure you get a chance to go to the Meiji Shrine/Harajuku on Sunday Afternoon. For gadgets — you’ll find that the prices are the same as the prices in Manila – but they’re made in Japan – which makes them attractive to most Tech geeks I know.
I’m so Jealous – it seems like the fall colors are at it’s peak. I was there early November – and the leaves have not turned.
Oh – if you have a chance to go to Osaka or Kyoto and ride the Bullet train – do that. That’s awesome technology.

Nice one Yuga.
I hope that you can get any 1seg-compatible device (USB tuner, cellphone,PSP tuner,1seg Mini LCD TV) so when you go home to the Philippines, you can now receive ISDB-T 1seg broadcasts from GEMNET and NBN and soon ABS-CBN. TV5 and GMA may also start its DTV broadcasts by next year.
I suggest that you buy a cheap one.
Have a nice trip there!!
