vivo Y28: Slim 6,000mAh Battery Heavyweight under PHP 10,000

With smartphones, there is one feature that has been greatly considered in the past few years—battery life.

The recent releases this year alone have provided fast processors, fluid displays, with a standard of at least 8GB RAM. However, even sizable battery capacities can have trouble handling these in favor of better energy consumption.

This is where the new vivo Y28 comes in. Priced below PHP 10,000, this budget-friendly phone carries a large 6,000mAh battery capacity and so much more.

It’s also optimized to perform for the entire day (or more), even with multitasking. Whether users are watching movies or playing games, the device is built to last.

Let’s get right into what the newest slim battery heavyweight offers below!

Sleek and Slim Design

This year, vivo has been on a roll with manufacturing sleek devices. The Y28 is slim (7.99mm), light (199 grams), while still packing a large 6,000mAh battery.

Our review unit came in the Gleaming Orange color option, sporting a soft hue that has a premium feel. Even its camera island looks like a diamond-studded watch face.

The vivo Y28 has a glossy, metallic frame with a smudge-resistant back panel. On top of that, the phone has an IP64 rating for dust and water resistance too.

At the front, the Y28 has a 6.68-inch HD+ (1608 by 720) display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. The screen also offers 1000 nits of peak brightness with a TUV Low Blue Light Certification.

The screen also has relatively thin, asymmetrical bezels that help make an immersive multimedia consumption and scrolling experience. However, we’ll get into this later in the article.

So far, we can see that the newly-released device offers a sleek design language blended with functionality. So, what else does it have up its sleeves?

Daily-life scenarios like missing calls or not being ready for photo opportunities are catered by the Dynamic Light feature. Users can find this in the phone settings!

Simply look for dynamic effects, and enable it for incoming calls and notifications. From here, users can find the light blinking upon getting a notification. The rear camera flash also blinks when set to count down prior to taking a photo with friends.

It even has a neat integration for concerts if you need your flashlight up. With Dynamic Light, you can turn on Music Rhythm flash to provide your own mini strobe light for the function.

Overall, the phone does well for itself under the design segment. The Y28 provides users with essentials while boasting a sleek profile with neat features.

Performance-based Chipset

The vivo Y28 runs on a MediaTek Helio G85 based on a 12nm process technology.

According to MediaTek , this chipset optimizes overall performance. It manages the device’s CPU, GPU, and memory in favor of active measurements of power, thermal, and gameplay factors.

It also features a full suite of connectivity like WiFi and 4G/LTE, making for consistent call quality both via standard protocols and over the internet.

The Helio G85 has a total of 8 CPU cores:

  • Two (2) ARM Cortex-A75 performance cores running up to 2GHz
  • Six (6) ARM Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores running up to 1.8GHz.

The Cortex-A75 performance cores power the active apps and games, with the help of the ARM Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. The Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores run most of the background and in-active apps.

The Cortex-A55 cores are built for energy efficiency, making for longer device uptime and less battery consumption. Since there are more of these cores, this chipset is slated to provide end users with an excellent battery life.

For reference, our review unit also came with 8GB of RAM + 8GB Extended RAM and 128GB of internal storage. You can expand this to up to 1TB of storage via a hybrid microSD slot.

Battery Tests

The vivo Y28 packs a generous 6,000mAh battery, featuring 44W of FlashCharge technology. With these power-relative specs, we found it fitting to take several tests with mixed usage variables.

In PCMark’s Work 3.0 Battery Life test, the vivo Y28 did better than expected in terms of multitasking. The phone kept going for 22 hours and 5 minutes.

This test was conducted at 50% brightness, muted volume, and in airplane mode.

For our proprietary video loop test, the device was able to provide an insane 27 hours and 17 minutes of playback.

This was done by playing full HD movies at 50% brightness and in airplane mode.

Considering that the Y28 performed beyond expectations in the previous tests, we had to take it out for gaming. We found that the device can provide end users with
12 hours and 30 minutes of gameplay.

This test was conducted with brightness and volume set to 50% over a stable Wi-Fi connection and Game Mode active. After testing, I have to admit that maxing out the volume made for an even better gaming session.

The Y28 has dual stereo speakers that offer up to 300% max volume. It surely contributed to an immersive gaming experience. Users who prefer louder audio (especially mobile FPS players) should be able to make the most out of this.

For our final test, we have to address how fast the phone charges from empty to full. vivo noted that the Y28 charges to 50% with 35 minutes of charging. It should also be at full power by 1 hour and 25 minutes.

With the Y28’s 44W FlashCharge brick, we found that it takes even less to reach full power. The phone takes 30 minutes to reach 46% and 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach 100% power.

It’s evident that the FlashCharge brick works as advertised, with accurate estimations. With how power efficient the device is, we can vouch that it can run well with 30 minutes of charging.

If users need to rush, simply doing your morning routine while leaving the Y28 plugged in should be enough.

Final Thoughts

The vivo Y28 offers a good mix between design, performance, and overall optimization.

From experience, this is slated to be a solid pickup for the entry-level segments with what it offers. Users will get a great chipset favoring performance and battery, along with a premium-feeling design.

Of course, we can’t forget that this slim device is undoubtedly a battery heavyweight. With the battery life that the Y28 has, the device is a proven reliable daily driver.

The vivo Y28 will definitely be beneficial to those looking for smartphones with extra-long battery life. For example, it’s great for all-day outdoor endeavors! Grab or FoodPanda riders and ride-hailing services like Angkas or MoveIt can make the most out of the Y28.
