When Nokia announced back in January that it will make Ovi Maps with Turn-by-Turn Navigation free for its customers, I was a bit disappointed by the limited number of handsets that they supported.
That’s because they didn’t support my favorite Nokia handset, the E71. I was using an E72 back then so I was able to try the Ovi Maps and was impressed by the turn-by-turn navigation. Maybe that decision to pre-select the units that can handle Ovi Maps was a way to drive more sales to the newer units (N97 Mini, X6 and E72).
But today, Nokia finally announced they’ve released a version of the Ovi Maps that supports the old models like the E66 and the E71.
But according to Nokia engineers, “due to technical constraints in backporting the app to existing devices, it isn’t possible to offer further premium content such as Guide Michelin and Lonely Planet guides. These two devices will also be the last of our S60 3.1 and older devices to support this version of Ovi Maps.”
Ovi Maps compatible devices include the Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia X6, Nokia N86 8MP and with different functionality the Nokia E71, and Nokia E66.
would you know how can i update the philippine metro manila street map in my nokia e75?
hi
would you know how can i update the philippine metro manila street map in my nokia e75?
Nokia 5530 also supports Ovi Maps. But sadly, the turn-by-turn nav feature you said is not available here in the Philippines. =/
Or am I missing something?
I’m a foreigner. I have a prepaid E63. Let’s say I did have one of the supported devices, but prepaid, would the maps still work, or do I need to be on a plan and have some kind of a data connection?
I think the problem is Symbian, though I agree Nokia is also wishing to push buyers to their new phones. Symbian is so fractured and deployed on such disparate hardware that it must be difficult to roll out a fully featured application like satnav on all handsets.
What is really puzzling is that the supposed flagship N900 still hasn’t gotten Ovi support. Maybe the Meego deal with Intel means Nokia is giving up on Maemo as a focus?
@Sir Yuga
master when I install the OVI Maps to my E71 this message popup “Unable to intall, no access”….
Still no support for Nokia E63?!
I mean for your E75.
Doc Harry sir, how much are you offering for your E71?
Oh come on! This confirms that I made a big mistake trading in my E71 for this brick (aka E75). Time to change up!
Am I pissed or what? STILL NO SUPPORT for this brick I keep lugging around (AKA E75)! Talk about neglected! This totally seals the deal for me. Anybody who wants to buy this cheap, let me know!
