HUAWEI Mate XT Review

Like most innovations, the foldable smartphone market has had its fair shares of ups and down since its infancy. Fast-forward to 2025 and HUAWEI plans to push the boundaries of foldable innovation once again, building-off the success of their Mate X6, where we saw a refined and polished dual-fold experience;

HUAWEI takes it a step further with the Mate XT—the world’s first commercially available trifold smartphone.

So, whether you’re using it as an ultra-portable computer with a Bluetooth keyboard, enjoying an ultra portable and immersive Netflix experience, reading PDF’s and documents on the go, or multitasking like never before; the Mate XT sets a new standard.

Find out more in the review below!

Design and Build

Creating a tri-fold smartphone is no easy task, which is why HUAWEI deserves all the praise for turning this into a reality.

Jumping into its incredible design, the HUAWEI Mate XT embodies cutting-edge innovation, elevating the boundaries of what a folding smartphone can be. And handling it for the first time can be a little daunting or overwhelming but like any piece of tech it’s pretty easy to figure out.

The Mate XT is the thinnest trifold smartphone in the industry at just 3.6mm when fully unfolded, so much so, it’s as if the USB Type-C port was the only reason they couldn’t make it any thinner. I mean, just look at it next to a normal non folding phone!

The advanced hinge system was key in making this concept a reality, HUAWEI prides itself by claiming they’re the only ones in the market capable of supporting both inward and outward folds, leveraged by around a decade of research and development.

–Which is why, currently, only HUAWEI has been able to commercialize a true trifold smartphone. Not to mention, 100% of its core components are made with ultra-high-strength steel just like the one found on the Mate X6 for improved rigidity.

Found on the right, whether folded or unfolded are the Mate XT’s physical buttons: the power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner and the volume rocker.

Up top there’s an infrared blaster for using it as a universal remote, and found at the bottom is the dual nano SIM card tray and USB Type-C port for wired charging and data transfers.

The device also gets noise-cancelling mics for calls and speakers at both the top and bottom sides too!

Our review unit is in what we like to call the Ironman Red option, which features gold accents all over, the red they chose for the vegan leather rear panel leans more towards a burgundy in person, which contrasts so well with the gold motifs.

We even get some patterning on the rear camera bezel, which we think is a nice touch. And for something that fully unfolds to a sizable tablet, we’ve definitely noticed a lot of lovely symmetrical design choices even when it is folded.

Either way, if that hot rod red is too loud for end-users, they should be glad to know it also comes in a Wakandan Black for those who want something more stealthy and reserved, which also gets the same gold accenting all over.

Overall, we really liked the design cues from the HUAWEI Mate XT. It balances cutting-edge hinge engineering with quaint design cues that feel equally safe and bold at the same time.

I mean, it is the first in its class at the end of the day.

Display, Multimedia and Biometrics

Moving on, the HUAWEI Mate XT obviously offers an unmatched visual experience with its HUGE 10.2-inch LTPO OLED display that features a 3k resolution. This is the unfolded panel that just takes “binging video content and playing games on a phone” to the next level!

When folded, each third of the display measures 6.4-inches diagonally, which feels a lot more natural compared to other foldables in the market.

When the display is fully utilized, its size is about 9 times bigger than that of a regular phone and its refresh rate goes as high as 90Hz and as low as 60Hz on this panel.

And with a spanking new trifold formfactor another key highlight from the huge display is its impressive MultiView in One Experience, allowing seamless transitions for what’s shown on screen between different fold states, whether folded, dual-folded, or fully trifolded to suit various multitasking needs.

It’s worth noting that we can only split screen between two apps but with pop-up windows and the extra screen real estate, we didn’t really feel it was much of a hindrance.

But some of you may be wondering, what’s the point of a super portable 10.2-inch display without good audio, right?

Well we’re happy to report that unsurprisingly HUAWEI got that right here too. Audio output from the stereo speaker setup sounds phenomenal, producing a very balanced sound stage with good clarity.

It’s pretty much a pocketable personal cinema with the HUAWEI Mate XT. Good stuff.

For biometric security, the Mate XT features face and fingerprint unlock. Both systems worked flawlessly in our testing with no gripes to write about.

Cameras

Jumping into optics, HUAWEI integrates its cutting-edge Ultra Aperture XMAGE Camera system into the Mate XT, delivering flagship-level photography and videography.

We get three cameras at the back; The main sensor is a 50MP camera that gets PDAF, OIS, and a nifty adjustable aperture where we can see the blades as they open up from f/4 to f/1.4.

Next to it is the 12MP periscopic telephoto sensor that also gets PDAF and OIS support and serves as its 5.5x optical zoom. Followed by the 12MP ultrawide sensor that also gets PDAF.

In front resides an 8MP selfie camera sitting inside a punch-hole notch, but of course, users can always use the main cameras for selfies since this is a foldable phone.

The HUAWEI Mate XT takes the best of what it can from their existing mobile photography powerhouses like the Pura 70 series.

We get a wide range of camera features here like Speed Snapshot for capturing fast-moving subjects while still retaining focus, as well as macro photography.
Images come out very nice when using the main and telephoto cameras, with some falloff in overall sharpness for the ultrawide.

For video, the Mate XT is capable of shooting up to 4K 60p for the main cameras and 4k, 30fps for the front-facing camera.

OS, Apps, and UI

For software, our global version Mate XT runs on EMUI 14.2, and we’re pretty used to everything at this point.

We do not get Google apps natively installed out of the box, but this is pretty much a non-issue at this point since we can pretty much install all those apps from the HUAWEI AppGallery.

But in general there’s a lot of cool things we can do with EMUI, from mapping button shortcuts for quick launching apps to the nice multitasking experience with the smart side bar and SuperHub. There’s a lot of helpful software tools perfect for nice productivity workflow.

Of course, EMUI end-users just need to get used to the experience.

Performance and Benchmarks

Running the HUAWEI Mate XT’s operations is their very own homegrown Kirin 9010, a 7nm chipset that features an octa-core CPU capable of clock speeds that go up to 2.3 GHz paired with a Maleoon 910 GPU. And it’s configured with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.

When it came to day-to-day productivity tasks and use, we virtually ran into no issues with the Mate XT. It didn’t matter what we were up to, the 2025 trifold could handle it.

With the HUAWEI Mate XT we’ve edited and exported multiple videos using CapCut, written scripts on Docs while doing research on a browser or streaming a video and have ran into no issues.

For gaming, we’ve clocked in a couple of matches in Mobile Legends and have even been able to run Genshin Impact in the “Highest” graphics settings set to 60 fps. Surprisingly, it didn’t even noticeably warm-up till after an hour on Genshin.

For those of you interested in benchmark numbers, we’ve ran our usual tests and can see the scores below.

Battery

Powering the Mate XT is a 5600mAh Silicon-Anode Battery, which is also a big contributing factor for how they were able to get the device so thin.
Behind each display panel inside is a battery that only measures 1.9mm thin each, which is freaking WILD!

In our testing, the device lasts a whole day of use but we still feel like having to charge at the end of the day, just so we don’t have to do so the next morning.

Either way, luckily, it also charges pretty quickly with 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge and 50W Wireless SuperCharge for convenient, high-speed wireless charging. These aren’t the fastest charging speeds from HUAWEI, but we aren’t complaining either way.

In our PCMark Work 3.0 Battery Testing, the HUAWEI Mate XT lasted 19 hours and 39 minutes (folded), and 11 hours and 16 minutes (unfolded) which are both great scores in general and for a generation 1 product.

In our proprietary video loop test, where we loop a FHD video with the device set to airplane mode, brightness set to 50% and muted to account for mixed usage variables, the Mate XT lasted 20 hours (folded), and 11 hours and 40 minutes (unfolded.)

Connectivity

For connectivity options, mobile networking goes up to 5G, and it also gets WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and the infrared sensor mentioned earlier.

It’s also worth noting that the USB Type-C port featured in the device also gets DisplayPort 1.2 certification, which means if end-users were really serious about turning their XT’s into their all-in-one computing devices, they could easily dock into their office monitors with the help of some preplanned dongle and cable management.

Final Thoughts

All in all, in our opinion, the HUAWEI Mate XT is designed for those who demand the cutting edge of consumer technology.

For the time being owning one is definitely a luxury and a flex (no pun intended.) Professionals in face-to-face business meetings can dish it out as an icebreaker of sorts, or maybe even small talk their way with it catioulting them to making the sale. And tech-gurus can just rave about how they own the first commercially available trifold phone in the world!

Needless to say, HUAWEI has once again set a new benchmark in the smartphone industry, proving its leadership in hardware advancements. While the Mate X6 positioned itself as a premium yet affordable foldable, the Mate XT is an unparalleled achievement in the ongoing history that is foldable smartphones.

As of now, only HUAWEI has mastered the art of the TriFold, making this a revolutionary device that pushes boundaries like never before.

We don’t have the official pricing as of yet but in Europe it goes for EUR 3,499PHP 210,547USD 3,620INR 317,417CNY 26,434 which roughly converts to PHP 213,000USD 3,644INR 315,879EUR 3,510CNY 26,561.

The HUAWEI Mate XT | Ultimate Design with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage, is now available for pre-order in the Philippines from February 28 to March 31 at PHP 199,999USD 3,422INR 296,599EUR 3,296CNY 24,940, with an exclusive pre-order bundle worth PHP 39,998USD 684INR 59,317EUR 659CNY 4,988, including a HUAWEI FreeClip and 1-Year Accidental Screen Damage Protection.

And even though that is a lot of money, it’s pretty easy to see why that is once you’ve tried it.
