ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 First Impressions

Just when you thought that powerful gaming laptops can only come in bulky figures, the ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) has announced a new machine which claims to be the world’s slimmest gaming laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU – the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501.

The Zephyrus is one of the most modern-looking yet stylish gaming laptop unveiled. While we can say the same thing to the ASUS ROG GX800 and Acer Predator 21 X, the Zephyrus is incredibly thin measuring at 16.9 – 17.9mm. It’s thinner than the Razer Blade Pro which is at 22.5mm, and although the Razer’s flagship notebook can compete with the specs, we prefer the more intimidating design of the Zephyrus.

Starting with the color, the Zephyrus employs a black metallic color with metallic orange accents. The top lid has a criss-cross design with brushed metal finish with the reflective ROG badge placed towards the right.

Like with most laptops, the ports are housed on the sides. On the left are the power port, HDMI, USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 3, and mic/headphone combo port. On the right is another USB 3.0 port, and SD card slot.

Opening the lid will reveal most of its features. There’s the 15.6-inch 120Hz display with support for NVIDIA G-SYNC and 100% sRGB color gamut. Below it is a spacious grille which is likely for ventilation for its internal components, while positioned in front of the chassis is the keyboard with ASUS Aura RGB lighting, as well as the backlit touchpad with an integrated 10-key function on the right-hand side.

Another feature that makes the Zephyrus unique is the exclusive Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) with AeroAccelerator (AA) technology that increases the speed and efficiency of airflow through the laptop. When the Zephyrus is opened, a portion of the bottom of the chassis at the back flexes to increase the airflow volume by 20% and further increase air circulation.

As for the engine under the hood, the Zephyrus is powered by the 7th Generation Intel Core i7 processor and the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics.

As for local pricing, availability, and configuration, those are yet to be announced, but you can expect ASUS to launch it in the Philippines soon.
