It seems like Facebook is gearing up to tap into the gaming community by ramping up its recently-introduced Gameroom feature by announcing support for Unity in its developer beta.
The company is targeting developers to bring “high-quality games to the PC” by making them free to download so everyone can play it on a desktop or even on-the-go. This native Windows project allows players to get their hands on both web and native games built with API.
Gamers will have the ability to continue game progress across different platforms, choose the graphics settings, and upload all creative assets in the app center. Facebook promises loading times of less than 10 seconds and zip bundles will be no larger than 10MB.
If you think this is somewhat familiar, it is because Steam has been offering this download-to-play experience. Facebook thinks its reach to a wider range is what gives it an edge over Steam — so it will be interesting to see how this would play out.
It’s been reported that an estimated 1.75 billion consumers will get on this feature once it fully takes off.
