TikTok is currently testing 60-minute video uploads, presumably aiming to rival YouTube even for long form video streaming.
According to an article from TechCrunch, this feature is only available to a limited group of users in select markets.
Presently, there are no plans to make this feature widely available yet. However, the idea is clear that TikTok wants to branch out with long form content. After all, the platform already contends with YouTube shorts viewers.
TikTok initially had a 15-minute upload limit upon their launch, similar to YouTube’s infancy stages. While this has steadily increased over the years, TikTok noted that they’re considering creators’ wishes for more time.
Content for cooking demos, beauty tutorials, educational lesson plans, and comedic sketches demand a bit more time for some videos. TikTok added that the purpose of increasing the time limit caters to these subject areas.
In that regard, this will also open the gate for full episodes of TV shows on their platform. In 2023, Peacock made the first episode of a show available on TikTok. This was broken up into five parts due to the video time limit that the platform provides.
If this pushes through, episodes like this won’t be segmented anymore. TikTok has also been working on a horizontal full screen mode with video-scrubbing thumbnails.
