X is developing a new feature aimed at reducing spam posts, according to independent app researcher Nima Owji, who has a track record of uncovering unreleased X features.
This new capability will allow users to disable links in replies to their posts. Owji shared a post on X, depicting an interface with an option to tick a box if a user wants to prevent replies that include links.
Christopher Stanley, Senior Director of Security Engineering at X, confirmed the feature’s development in a response to Owji’s post. “My team built this,” Stanley wrote in the replies (of a related tweet).
The feature aims to curb spam bots and deter users from promoting external sites in replies. However, it may also hinder users from sharing legitimate links meant to counter misinformation and prevent the spread of fake news.
This is the latest in a series of platform updates by X, including the exploration of an in-app currency for creators, enhanced ID verification, and job listings.
