Sony to develop technology, plans to double HDD capacity

Sony is making moves to develop new technology with intentions to double HDD capacity.

Sony will begin developing laser diodes for precise data writing in disks, intending to double the capacity of hard disk drives.

This move addresses the worldwide need for disk space storage. Sony Semiconductor Solutions will start producing the diodes by May, partnering with Seagate Technology.

The partnership will allow Sony to use Seagate’s parts from 3 to 5-inch HDDs that can store up to 30TB worth of data. Sony will invest around $33 million with factories in Japan and Thailand for new production lines.

The new technology gained from the partnership will provide us with tools that can handle more information written on the same area of a disk, enabling HDDs to increase their overall data storage capabilities.

With the recent boom in training AI models worldwide, demand for data housing is at an all time high. Sony’s development in HDD technology might be able to put them at the forefront of providing for the many companies who are planning to develop their own AI innovation.

Yes Sony will supply all HDD companies that will manufacture HAMR technology, Seagate is ahead than Western digital by 2 years in the slider design, not a surprise though Sony should provide a smaller design to reduce the overall mass of head gimbal assembly. This is not new :) Laser diode is already used under development phase way 2012
