Spotify has just removed lyrics from their users’ free account features. I guess it’s time to say goodbye to smart TV karaoke sessions at home with friends and family.
This move adds to the platform’s limitations on free accounts, which already sets limited skips per hour with shuffled playback. Spotify likely removed this feature in an effort to make an incentive for users to start paying for monthly subscriptions.
The platform hasn’t issued an official announcement yet. At the moment, users are reporting that they’ve received messages indicating a limit on how much lyrics they can view monthly.
Previously, the company tinkered with hiding lyrics for their free users but downplayed it as a limited test. Free users are already restricted with how often they can skip songs, all while going through shuffled playlists over on-demand listening.
Spotify’s free access still provides great value to their users who want to save money over features and audio quality. After all, the access to millions of songs is still there (with limitations) for streaming.
A Spotify Premium subscription starts at PHP 149 monthly for the individual plan in the Philippines. Family and Duo plans are also available at higher pricing. These plans offer more control and features like ad-free listening, unlimited skips, and now in-app lyrics.
If users are looking for lyrics while streaming music, there are other free alternatives for consideration. Presently, YouTube Music offers an ad-supported free tier with on-demand playback with unrestricted access to lyrics.
