In the latest Ookla’s study reveals that Starlink’s download and upload speeds are slower compared to other traditional providers in the Philippines.
Ookla’s Q2 2024 Speedtest Intelligence report shows 38Starlink’s median download speed at 48.14 Mbps, while fixed broadband in the country averages 94.42 Mbps.
Moreover, Starlink’s upload speed is also significantly lower at 12.63 Mbps, compared to 94.13 Mbps from fixed broadband.
Starlink also struggles in latency, with just an average of 50ms, which is double compared of to other fixed broadband, which leads to longer data transmission times.
While data shows lacking in certain areas, Starlink’s satellite internet still offers certain advantages, Even local ISPs still lead in speed.
However, the report acknowledges Starlink’s value in the Philippines, where the country’s geography limits fixed broadband’s reach.
In these remote areas, satellite broadband like Starlink could be a practical solution.
ABI Research forecasts that by 2028, the Philippines could become the leading market for satellite broadband in Southeast Asia, with around 909,000 subscriptions.

cakenomad says:
majority of isp in PH is lined then Ookla compare it to a wireless connection. It’s over satellite what do you expect??? joke comparison
Lola Meemaw says:
comparing apple to an orange… it should have been compared to wireless connection too and not the wired/fiber connection.
it should also take note of the service level or how often the disruption of the service happens to the ISP, and the mean speed experienced by the user over a period and not during the single speed test. The test should also use the server nearest to the common website accessed by Pinoys (e.g. Facebook, Youtube, Tiktok) and the not the one provided by the ISP. For example, PLDT subscriber in NCR will generally use the PLDT Pasig speedtest server which will give them a very high speed. But users do not access any website located near that server. If you want to give a more accurate result, better use speedtest server in HongKong, Singapore, or the US.
