Sony, Nikon, Canon to use new camera tech to detect fake AI photos

With the proliferation of fake images or AI-generated images, it has become much harder to detect which photos are real or fake.

Currently, photos produced by cameras and smartphones come with an EXIF metadata tag that includes camera settings, date and time, location, image metrics, and copyright information. However, this metadata can be easily altered right from the camera settings itself or a direct manipulation of the output file.

As such, camera manufacturers Nikon, Sony Group, and Canon are developing a new technology that will embed digital signatures on the images they produce. This tamper-resistant signature will include data such as the name of the photographer, date, location, and other credentials.

A web-based tool called Verify was also developed in collaboration with numerous camera makers, tech manufacturers, and global news organization to display the embedded information from photos to validate its authenticity.
