Adding to our developing story from over the weekend, Apple is in development of at least two foldable iPhone prototypes.
According to this report, “a person with direct knowledge of the situation” spoke of Apple’s venture into foldable technology. The report stated that the foldable iPhones would adopt a clamshell design.
In 2018, Apple stated they wanted to build foldable models that would be as thin as the contemporary iPhones. The company also desired for the iPhone to have the display on the outside when folded.
Practically speaking, the technology to develop its battery and display wasn’t there yet. Engineers encountered challenges in durability, with the vulnerability of external displays being evident. Meanwhile, Apple’s aspirations for a slim design had been halted by limitations on battery size.
This is separate from the initial report from a Korean website, which claimed to have details of the development.
Apple paused development for the foldable iPhone in 2020, focusing on a foldable iPad instead. This isn’t expected to be in the market until 2026, but both seem to be under development as of today.
In the present day, it’s said that Apple engineers are trying to get rid of the display crease. A hinge is currently under design that lets the screen lay totally flat. This is intended so that the Apple Pencil wouldn’t be affected poorly in its use with the developing models.
LG and Samsung Display have reportedly both been tapped for the development of the foldable iPad. However, it remains unclear which companies would be assisting Apple in making the screens for the foldable iPhone.
Despite ongoing efforts and reports, the launch of a foldable iPhone or iPad is not in the conversation for 2024. However, reports indicate that Apple has been testing technology for foldables. The company remains committed to perfect their foldable devices before making anything official.
