Cherry Mobile Burst 2.0 Quick Review

We’ve got yet another affordable quad-core smartphone from Cherry Mobile in our hands. This time it’s the Burst 2.0, a 4.5-inch dual-SIM Android handset which only costs Php700 more than the Flare 2.0 which we recently reviewed. So what do you get for that extra dough? Check out our brief overview after the break to find that out.

One of the obvious benefits of going for the Burst 2.0 is better build quality and larger screen. It’s a more respectable looking phone compared to the “Quad-core ng Bayan” and that additional half-an-inch of display goes a long way.

We really admire the overall design of this handset, particularly its slightly curved back panel coated in matte finish. This makes the phone easier to hold during one-hand operation and is less susceptible to fingerprints and scratches.

CM Burst 2.0

To give the smartphone some added flare, the OEM went for a glossy finish on the top panel where the 5MP camera is located, as well as the ports for audio and micro-USB. The same design scheme is applied for the two buttons (power and volume rocker) which are placed conveniently placed on each side of the handset.

Another thing we liked about the Burst 2.0’s design is that the micro-SD card slot is not obstructed by the battery; making it possible to switch cards on without having to turn off the phone. The SIM card slots, on the other hand, are a slight pain the neck to use because the SIM cards goes in the same slot and are only separated by a thin piece of metal.

Burst 2.0

With the exception of the chip maker (Qualcomm vs MediaTek), the Burst 2.0 actually shares the same internal configuration as its marginally cheaper sibling. Both phones run on a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 512MB RAM and has a measly 4GB internal storage which is predominantly occupied by its OS.

Having the same entry-level specs as the Flare 2.0, we didn’t expect something out of the ordinary coming from this handset. But after using it as our daily driver for nearly over a week, we noticed a significant difference in how this phone handles tasks compared to when we’re using the Flare.

UI

Launching third-party apps was relatively faster, multitasking was a tad smoother and instances of apps crashing were few and far in between. Intrigued by its feat, we ran our usual benchmark apps to get a better feel of how it performs.

The results we got out of the Burst 2.0 blew its Qualcomm-powered sibling out of the water. It got 13,818 on AnTuTu, 4,011 on Quadrant Standard and clocked in at 47.2fps on NenaMark2.

benchmark

Apart from the stellar scores it got from the benchmark tests and more superior build quality, the Burst 2.0 has another trick up its sleeve – battery life. We replicated the same testing environment (50% brightness and volume, no SIM cards and no data connection) that we used while testing the Flare 2.0 and used the same movie and media player (MX Player) to do the battery test for this handset.

The result, as you can see on the screenshot below, is nothing short of outstanding. In contrast to the Flare 2.0’s result, the Burst 2.0’s 2000mAh battery pack gave us twice as more mileage on single full charge.

Summary

We ended our Flare 2.0 review with a firm statement that if you’re looking for a more decent handset, you should be prepare to dish out a little extra cash for it. Fortunately for the frugal crowd, the Cherry Mobile Burst 2.0 is well worth that extra Php700 – one that truly gives consumers more bang for their buck.

RAM Management on Android 4.2 is good enough that 512MB of RAM isn’t much of a downer as it was before. Definitely a bang for the buck phone, everything is fast and smooth, very impressive especially at this price point. The camera though is where they decided to cut corners. Despite being 5MP, it simply sucks at being a camera. Proper lighting is a must if you want to take pictures.

Instead of removing the sim cards, just turn airplane mode on. This should prolong any of your battery tests because the phone’s gsm radio will be turned off.
