Apple, with its introduction of the 120Hz ProMotion display, has kept this technology exclusive to Pro iPhones since the iPhone 13 Series in 2021. Standard models, until now, have been limited to 60Hz panels.
While the iPhone 16 models have just hit the market, news about next year’s iteration is already circulating. According to MacRumors, the standard iPhone 17 could finally offer a 120Hz screen.
A slimmer variant, potentially called the iPhone 17 Air (likely replacing the Plus model), might also feature a 120Hz panel.
Notably, newer Pro models since the iPhone 14 have the ability to drop as low as 1Hz, enabling the always-on display feature. It’s unclear if the non-Pro models would also get the same treatment or would it be stuck to 10-60-120Hz.
Whatever the case, it is a welcome addition considering even budget Android phones have 120Hz display. It makes no sense if Apple keep limiting their non-Pro iPhones to 60Hz at this day and age.
While some argue that smooth iOS animations make these devices feel good, users are undoubtedly missing out, especially given the premium starting price of iPhones.
