TECNO continues to raise the bar, or should I say lower the barrier to entry for bendable-display smartphones. They really shook up the segment with last year’s TECNO Phantom V Fold and Flip!
For me the flip phone is what stole the show with its round cover display and Cute Pets wandering around; the best part?
–It was a lot more affordable compared to its competition with an official price tag of PHP 29,999USD 511INR 43,337EUR 487CNY 3,723.
And it’s pretty much the same story with this year’s TECNO Phantom V Flip 2, combining elegance, power, and functionality in a foldable device.
With a starting price of PHP 34,999USD 596INR 50,560EUR 568CNY 4,343, it’s an easier pill to swallow if you weren’t too sure about going all in with the bendy-displays but just wanted to try it out without having to borrow one.
With that said, let’s find out what this flip phone has to offer in this full written review.
Table of Contents
Starting off with the phone’s design, the TECNO Phantom V Flip 2 no longer features a round cover display. In fact it’s pretty much a square now!
Like most foldables nowadays, TECNO incorporates the ones that leave no room for gap when the phone is closed.
TECNO claims to have put the hinges through rigorous testing at both low and high temperature environments. Furthermore, they boast we shouldn’t have anything to worry about for up to 40,000 folds.
The cover screen gets a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 8 protection on top, while the more frosted matte glass rear panel gets Gorilla Glass 7 protection.
For buttons and ports, while folded; The power button that doubles as a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, along with its volume rocker is situated on the right side.
At the bottom, we get Dolby Atmos branding and a noise-cancelling mic with the first layer. Followed by a dual nano SIM card tray, primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and 1 out of 2 STEREO speakers.
The partner speaker also doubles as the call earpiece at the top of the main display’s bezel, next to a nifty and stealthy selfie flash!
Weighing in at only 196g, and measuring 7.64mm thin, when unfolded it’s pretty much a tall smartphone. It’s about 16mm, when folded making it truly pocket-friendly.
Available in Moondust Grey like we have here and Travertine Green color options, we can say both designs look very chic and should appeal to almost everyone who can afford it.
I do not think that the display’s bezels should get any thinner, because if so it would make flicking the phone open a lot more difficult. I’d also prefer lower side buttons for better ergonomics but what can we do, hinge design and all.
Just like last year, we don’t get any IP certification with the Phantom V Flip 2, but I’d also think you were crazy for wanting to dunk any current gen foldable device in water.
Overall for design and construction, we like it!
I mean sure, most foldable phones nowaday pretty much look the same, and that’s probably to better streamline the manufacturing process and all. But still, for how much TECNO’s selling this thing for, it’s pretty nice. We are also sure TECNO will be shrinking that cover display forehead bezel in the next iteration.
The tall dimensions when unfolded may not be for everyone but it should be ideal for users who love to watch widescreen content.
Speaking of display, the cover screen is a 3.64-inch AMOLED panel that lets users check notifications, access shortcuts, and even take selfies without unfolding the phone.
But on top of that, it’s also a small second screen for the actual phone. Which means, if we wanted to go on Youtube to watch the latest Yugatech video, we could. If we wanted to reply to messages or emails without unfolding the phone, we could do that too.
When unfolded, users are greeted by the 6.9-inch FHD+ LTPO AMOLED display (2640 x 1080) that features a 120Hz refresh rate users can manually set to 60 or even 90Hz in the Display settings.
Both the cover and main display provide a great viewing experience for media consumption and general use. Colors look accurate and we do get Dolby Atmos tuning with the stereo speakers.
They’re left on by default, which is most likely why we can’t find a toggle for it in the quick access menu. But if we pair the device up with headphones or speakers, we can toggle it off in the settings menu.
Sound quality comes off punchy but lacks in the low end. The speakers aren’t the loudest either, but clarity is pretty good nonetheless.
The crease on our review unit so far is holding up well, and by that, I mean it doesn’t seem to be creasing up more than it has been out of the box. But again, this is more of a time will tell type of thing, so maybe there’s an update video in the future.
Either way I tend to forget about the crease pretty quickly, and only notice it when one of my fingers glide over it.
For biometrics, there’s the aforementioned side-mounted fingerprint scanner (which is left-hand safe, although I did register my left index twice for more accurate reads.)
But actually for this flip phone, I like to depend on the optical face unlocking option more, even though I think it’s less secure.
For me, when we utilize face unlock without having to swipe the lock screen to unlock after recognition, just makes the overall experience with the TECNO Phantom V Flip 2 a lot more seamless.
We can also give TECNO plus points for being able to recognize my face with either the in-display camera unfolded, or the main camera when folded. Which is pretty neat!
Overall for display, no major gripes at all. But only time will truly tell how the main display holds up.
For optics, we get a dual camera system for the rear, or should I say front?
Regardless, it’s comprised of a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultrawide. The dual LED flash is situated below the sensors. And in-front is a 32MP selfie shooter under the display, with the aforementioned front-facing LED flash in the top bezel.
Checking-out some sample shots.
I’m happy to report that images that come out of either camera sensor on the Phantom V Flip 2 come out very sharp and clean. It’s almost surprising sometimes, especially in low light scenarios where we’d expect a muddy-looking picture.
Either way, it’s safe to say that we can easily get very usable images out of the Phantom V Flip 2, especially for social media use. We even get that fun AIGC Portrait feature we first saw with the Camon 30 Premier that can pretty much turn your selfie into the many preset midjourney style portraits.
For video capture, it supports up to 4K 30fps recording with the main cameras, and up to 2K at 30fps with the selfie camera.
It’s worth noting that we get Ultra Steady stabilization modes for both the front and rear sensors. For the selfie camera it caps to 1080p at 30p, but for the main shooter we can shoot at max resolution. There’s also Ultra Steady Pro for the main camera but that caps us back to shooting in FHD 30p.
For hardware, the Phantom V Flip 2 sports the MediaTek Dimensity 8020, a 6nm chipset that features 8-cores that clock up to 2.6 GHz paired with a Mali-G77 MC9 GPU.
It’s configured with 8GB of RAM which can be extended with another 8GB with MemFusion and 256GB of internal storage. And no storage expansion here.
BENCHMARKS:
Based on the AnTuTu and Geekbench multi-core results, we can infer Phantom V Flip 2’s ability to handle multiple apps and moderate workloads with ease. And it should all the more be ideal for users who need consistent, reliable performance.
But as promising these results are for the price, how did it perform in real world use?
I found no issues when it came to general daily use for productivity, calling and messaging, browsing, and even GPS navigation. I even clocked-in some Mobile Legends and BlockBlast hours and didn’t really run into any issues, so no qualms for light games either.
For more GPU-intensive titles like Genshin Impact, we ran it on the Phantom V Flip 2 at the Medium graphics preset and bumped the framerate up to 60. We think this is the best way to run the Genshin on this unit, but players can still bump it up to High. Just expect a lot more frame drops when fighting against a bunch of mobs.
We also noticed the phone can heat up a bit when playing any game for a prolonged period, most noticeable in the cover display area.
All-in-all, the TECNO Phantom V Flip 2 punches above its weight in terms of performance. It’s a capable workhorse for everyday use, gaming, and productivity.
But our review doesn’t end there, for software it runs on Android 14 skinned with TECNO’s HiOS 14.5 on top.
I definitely prefer the overall look of HiOS compared to something like XOS. We still do get a little bit of bloatware out of the box as well in the form of WPS and preinstalled social media apps, but apps like that can easily be uninstalled either way.
What’s cool here with the Phantom V Flip 2 is we get some extra features more inclined for a foldable device. Like being able to use this as a more ergonomically conventional camcorder, we do so by opening up the camera app, and folding the phone at a 90-degree angle.
This also works with the Gallery, media player, and Floating Windows.
Like on other recent TECNO device, we also get Dynamic Port on here, which is TECNO’s own version of Dynamic Island, giving the in-display camera some animated quirkiness for displaying useful information.
For software support, TECNO has promised at least 2 major OS upgrades along with the security patches for their recent devices, so it shouldn’t be different with the TECNO Phantom V Flip 2, unless said otherwise.
Equipped with a 4,720mAh battery that gets 70W of wired fast charging, we can easily charge up the phone from 0-50% in 15 minutes.
But maybe you won’t really have to till the end of the day since in our PCMark Work 3.0 battery testing, the Phantom V Flip 2 scored 12 hours and 48 minutes.
With a similar score garnered from our video loop test at 12 hours and 49 minutes.
In real-world use I got a day of full use with it, and with GPS navigation I was utilizing wired Android Auto.
For connectivity, the device supports WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and 5G, offering excellent network performance.
So in conclusion, the TECNO Phantom V Flip 2 stands out as an affordable yet feature-rich foldable-display flip phone. It features a sleek design, good performance, and robust camera system, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking to upgrade to a flip phone without breaking the bank.

only 2 OS upgrades? please. not another e-waste from tecno. it’s almost 2025. tecno is still lazy with their software support. also with that price, you’re way better off with somerhing else with your hard-earned money.
