The Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD is now official, promising to be faster than its predecessor that launched in January. It also offers a higher capacity option for users that need more than 2TB.
The SSD supports PCIe 4.0 x4 and 5.0 x2 interfaces, built on a 5nm controller. This is the latest in NAND tech that uses TLC chips and a nickel-coated heat shield.
The company claims that it’s more power efficient by 73% in comparison to the regular Samsung 990 EVO SSD. In terms of speed, it has a 4TB variant that offers top-notch random access operations.
It offers 1,050K IOPS input and 1,400 IOPS output. Sequential access peacocks at 7,250MB/s reading and 6,300 writing speeds as well. TL;DR, it’s about 50% faster than the base Samsung 990 EVO SSD.
For reference, the base SSD caps at 700K IOPS input and 800K IOPS output speeds. For sequential speeds, it has 5,000MB/s reading and 4,200MB/s writing speeds.
Side note, the EVO SSDs lack on-board DRAM as they use the host RAM. However, Samsung claims that their EVO Plus SSD nearly rivals the performance of SSDs with DRAM.
The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is notably optimized for gaming, business, and creative tasks. It will come in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB configurations. I should also mention that lower capacities have slightly lower random access and sequential speeds, although the gaps are small.
We’ll leave readers with a specs table that includes prices below. What do you guys think of the new Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD?
