Just like any other year, Apple’s latest line-up of iPhones are among the most wanted smartphones in the market today. Now that you’ve decided to upgrade to the new Apple iPhone 15, the next question is which model is best for you?
In this guide, we’ll go through each one of the four (4) models of the new iPhone 15 and provide insights into their suitability to your lifestyle, needs and budget.
Table of Contents
The iPhone 15 series comes in two (2) display sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches of Super Retina XDR display.
If you are looking at a smaller display, then the base model iPhone 15 or the iPhone 15 Pro are your bets. They’re easy to hold and use with one hand, not too cumbersome, but enough screen real estate to do your basic tasks.
If you want a little more screen real estate, then go for the 6.7-inch screens of the iPhone 15 Plus or the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This option gives you the biggest and most immersive experience if you are a heavy gamer, strong in productivity or simply a movie junkie spending hours and hour on Netflix or Apple TV+.
Take note, though, that only the Pro and Pro Max models support ProMotion technology and Always-On display.
With the bigger sizes of the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can expect that they will have bigger battery capacities and, thus, longer battery life.
According to Apple, the iPhone 15 base model has an expected 20 hours of video playback, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro at 23 hours, iPhone 15 Plus at 26 hours and the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 29 hours of video playback in one single full charge.
If battery is of utmost important to you, then the iPhone 15 Pro Max is your ideal variant.
It is also important to note that the iPhone 15 Pro Max supports USB 3 for up to 20x faster transfers compared to USB 2 on the iPhone 15 Plus.
iPhones have been known to take some of the best photos in a smartphone for years and that’s the reason many users prefer its cameras over other devices. This is also where the base models and the Pro models of the iPhone 15 differ a lot.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus comes with a dual-camera system — a 48MP main camera and a secondary ultra-wide camera. Optical zoom ranges from 0.5x to 2x.
On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max comes with a triple camera system — a 48MP main camera, a secondary ultra-wide and another telephoto camera. Additionally, while the iPhone 15 Pro has an optical zoom of up to 3x, the iPhone 15 Pro Max goes up to 5x optical zoom.
If you want the best photos and videos, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are your best bet. Now, the topic on 3x or 5x zoom is not a big deal but it’s still up to you.
Not everyone will agree to this but the color options of an iPhone is a big issue to some people. In the words of Jerry Maguire — “You had me at Natural Titanium.”
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have the widest color options — Pink, Yellow, Green, Blue, Black [1].
With the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, you have all the shades of Titanium — natural Titanium, Blue Titanium, White Titanium and Black Titanium.
This decision normally comes after you’ve decided on the model you’d actually want to get.
Speed and performance is rarely a topic when choosing from the same line up or generation of iPhones but if you are more particular, then you have to bear in mind that there’s actually a huge difference between the base model and the Pro models.
The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus is powered by an older Apple A16 Bionic chip which has a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU and 16-core Neural engine.
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max uses the latest Apple A17 Pro chip which has a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU and 16-core Neural engine. The A17 Bionic is the first 3nm chip from Apple which added 3 billion more transistors (now up to 19 billion in the A17) to make it more efficient.
Apple claims up to 20% better GPU performance on the A17 compared tot he A16 Bionic, up to 16% better single-core CPU performance and around 13% better multi-core CPU performance [2]. That’s on top of other enhancements like support for AV1 decoding and USB 3.2 Gen 2 ( up to 10Gbit/s or 1.25GBps).

iPhone 15. If you are budget-conscious and/or a first-time iPhone user, the base model iPhone 15 will get you started with the iOS ecosystem.
iPhone 15 Plus. You’re a regular iOS user with very basic case-use for the Apple ecosystem and simply need a bigger display and longer battery life.
iPhone 15 Pro. You are a power-user but prefer the more manageable size of the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro. You are heavy on photos and videos but do not see the use for 5x optical zoom. You simply want a small but powerful iPhone.
iPhone 15 Pro Max. You’re a long-time or hard-core iPhone user who wants to maximize the iOS ecosystem, prefer a larger display, longer battery life, a heavy camera user with the option to get as much as 1TB of storage. At this point, money is not an issue as long as you get the best iPhone out there.
