Broadband Internet in the Philippines: Historical Pricing & Speed (2012-2022)

If we look back in the last 10 years, broadband internet in the Philippines has improved significantly. From being dead last at #10 in the ASEAN region (circa 2014), we managed to climb up to #5 in 2021 (Are we still the slowest in SEAN?).

So we dug back all our articles regarding broadband and fiber internet in the Philippines since 2012 and collated these data to come up with historical pricing and speeds.

The table below indicates the monthly service fee (MSF) for each speed plan. Most of it comes with unlimited bandwidth but a few (especially the early packages) have data caps. That’s the reason why for the same speed, some plans have higher MSF.

Since the tabular data below were done in two-year intervals, the approximation of the year for the packages indicated may be +/- 6 months of the end of each calendar year.

2012 - 2020 Broadband High speed internet price in the Philippines

Here are our observations based on the table above:

  • The most affordable fiber internet plan in 2012 was 8Mbps at Php3,500 (PLDT). The most affordable fiber internet in 2022 is 20Mbps at Php999 (Sky Fiber).
  • The biggest drop in pricing in the 10 year period is the 100Mbps of PLDT. It was Php20,000 in 2014 and is now down to Php2,099.
  • Converge ICT offers the fastest speeds at the lowest price in 2022 with 800Mbps for only Php3,500.
  • For Php3,500, you get 8Mbps in 2012. Today, you get 800Mbps. That’s a 100x jump is speed for the same MSF.
  • The average internet speed in the Philippines last December 2021 was 50.26Mbps (Ookla). This is perhaps correlated to the median broadband plans offered across all ISPs which is the 50Mbps plan.

The Philippines is not yet in the top tier in the ASEAN region 11 in terms of average speed but we’re getting there.

SO, what was your very first fiber internet plan before, and how much did you pay for it?

Don’t forget that every account was a shared account. That means, the possible 20-30 other user are in the same slot as you. In this Case, divide the speed by 20 or 30 when all use the internet at the same time. That’s the slogan „up too“, can be 1000mbts or 50mbts. Only a dedicated slot with your own ip Adress gives you the maximum speed.

I’m paying 1699 a month for our PLDT internet. Only my daughter and I are the users as my nephew had applied for a separate line from another provider. Yet, it’s the same frustrating service every sinlge day for the last few years. ElsieI had to resort to mobile data even when I’m home. I’m fed up so I’ll have it cut today and apply with another provider. I can’t help feeling like being robbed.

In France I had fiber 1GB for 1500php in 2010, it also included tv box with 100 channels, phone with unlimited calls on smartphones to 37 countries, unlimited calls to landlines to 103 countries.
    The provider was FREE.
12 years later in Philippines, we re still very far from such offer.
Hardly get 50MB for the same price.

They also had an offer for smartphones, 750 php for the same unlimited calls on landline and smartphone, plus unli internet. In

Ookla is probably the most unreliable internet speed test. You also failed to mention that the prices on the chart you made include a landline for Globe and PLDT, which Sky ng Converge don’t provide. Well, that’s Pinoy journalism for you.

    • Avatar for Abe Olandres Abe Olandres says:

Ookla was the tool used in 2012 to claim that PH is dead last in the ranking so it is only but logical to use the same tool to measure if PH is still dead last in 2022.

    • Avatar for Abe Olandres Abe Olandres says:

Apologies for the oversight. We thought it’s already common knowledge that PLDT and Globe force customers to get a landline just to get a broadband subscription. We don’t want to highlight this unfair business practice as a positive advantage.

I don’t know where you got your information. In the province the average internet speed during the day is signifikant below 1 Mbit/s. Even in the night do not expect more than 2 Mbit/s for Youtube for example. The kids can’t follow the YouTube links in the modules which they have to prepare weekly. That’s the truth, Manila seems the bellybutton of the nation other regions are not of interest.

Converge 1500 is 50mbps. 35 was the old plan, no longer available.

Mine was 75mbps for 2500 when i signed up, now its 300.

If you’re still at 35, contact converge to upgrade.

Still waiting for Globe to drop the price on 1 Gbps. Don?t be fooled: Their prices on the chart are only good for a year. Not to mention Globe is more expensive than those two.

Before DSL, we used to have a 56 kbps modem. The actual connection is only 14.4 or 28.8 kbps. If anyone dares lift the phone you’re screwed.

Then when DSL came it around 512kbps, over the years it climbed to 10 mbps. It’s only the download that increased in speed though.

When they upgraded us to fiber it gave 50 mbps, both up and down. Compared to the modem speed, the fiber connection is almost 1,000x faster. Although I’m not sure if we actually got more productive. :P

that’s the dial up lol. we used to have that around year 2000-2007 then change to 1mbps from pldt, which was good that time, its not that fast but was consistent but not good with multiple devices.

additional info, Globe and PLDT have landlines bundled on those price.

Correction: Converge P1500 plan is only 35Mbps. Source: I am currently subscribed to said plan.

The Globe price is misleading. It’s a 12 month promo price. Need to add P300 more to their already overpriced rates. Poor research? Or paid by Globe?

  12. Avatar for DM DM says:

Already tried PLDT and Globe. Converge is the worst in both internet and customer service.

  13. Avatar for DM DM says:

Can we also talk about how bad to the highest level Converge’s internet and customer service are?

    • Avatar for GermanGuy GermanGuy says:

Agree, just go to converge Facebook page and there are 1000s of complaints on a daily basis.

    • Avatar for Nhel Nhel says:

yes. customer service is worst. 7days before they respond in email. another 7days to action my request. but still their connection is unmatch in terms of pricing if there is no technical issues.
