Gadget Reviews Roundup: November 2019

It’s finally December tomorrow and pretty sure a lot of you are excited to purchase new gadgets. But before you finalize that list, why don’t you check out the devices we reviewed this month which includes the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, OnePlus 7T, Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro, Lenovo IdeaPad S145, TCL Plex, and Huawei Mate 30, to name a few. Here’s our Gadget Reviews Roundup for the month of November.

Written

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8

The Redmi Note 8 is quite an impressive smartphone — it has an excellent feel to it, the cameras deliver moderate images, it has a modest battery life, and it comes with a good panel. Despite those aspects, one can’t ignore the occasional stutters during navigation and the poor gaming performance in graphics-heavy titles.

Tenda Nova MW3

For PHP 4,999, you can have an inexpensive solution to your WiFi dead spot problems. I found no loss in speed when plugged directly to our modem via LAN cable and connecting to the WiFi Mesh from 10 meters away, and I was able to stream five 1080p videos simultaneously from the same distance.

Lenovo IdeaPad S145

The IdeaPad S145 is a pretty straightforward, no-frills laptop. If you’re a light user or a student/professional who’s looking for a machine to do basic computing and productivity tasks and don’t mind its starting price of PHP 18,995, then the Lenovo S145 is for you.

Huawei Mate 30

It’s got a good display, excellent performance, long battery life, and a reasonable price of PHP34,990. That’s a whole 16,000 pesos cheaper than the Mate 30 Pro. And for that much less, it’s still a well-rounded, well-executed smartphone.

Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro

The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro is an impressive premium mid-range device. It’s got a massive battery life, performance is smooth-sailing, moderately good display, exquisite design and build, and let’s face it, Xiaomi’s penta-camera novelty delivered quality images.

Honor 9X

The Honor 9X is a decent smartphone. It has a solid build and a classic look to it, an immersive notch-less display, a modest battery life, and a good enough performance. There may be some issues with the images produced by the cameras, and hardcore gamers may also find that gaming on this device isn’t up to par.

TCL Plex

The TCL Plex is a great first entry from the Chinese electronics company. For a mid-range device, it’s got a pretty substantial IPS display, pretty-good performance, above-average battery life, and a set of cameras that work well in optimal lighting conditions. It retails for PHP15,990 for the 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage model, which is not bad, considering other smartphones are priced higher for that configuration.

Lenovo IdeaPad S540

Priced at PHP 69,995, it’s easy to recommend it to people who are willing to pay the premium for portability. Hopefully, Lenovo will release something between the S540 and the S145 for people who want something in the middle.

Lenovo Yoga S940

While the Lenovo Yoga S940 does achieve its goal of being ultraslim and portable, it lacks in a lot of key areas. The display is excellent; however, the integrated UHD graphics from Intel can’t power it when doing graphically intensive tasks. We would’ve liked to see an NVIDIA MX 250 to help, especially for editing and rendering workloads.

Cherry Mobile Flare S8 Pro

For its price tag of PHP 5,999 (bundled with a HELO LX Wellness Band), the S8 Pro is a pretty decent smartphone. Additionally, there’s not a lot of smartphones out there that offer 4GB RAM and 64GB in the price range of under PHP 6K.
